My biggest frustration in starting jiu jitsu was probably trying to find gear that fit to train in being a fat, out of shape guy. It's definitely a barrier, especially to those with low self esteem and confidence from their physical condition. I don't have those problems, but I know it is a problem with getting some of those people to even consider trying jiu jitsu. Ironically, GB says "jiu jitsu for everyone" but you have to buy Their gear and it probably won't fit those larger people looking to make a lifestyle change.

No, I did not start at GB, although my first school was a former GB affiliate/lineage. Jiu jitsu was a natural choice for me as I used to wrestle. I am still an athletic big guy. I just wish those fatties looking to get in shape would try jiu jitsu vs some chain health club. So much more beneficial IMO.

For most schools its a way to make big bucks. Near 100% markups on gis to have a couple patches put on them. Ive seen school tell you you have to buy their $100 gi for $250. No exceptions, no subsistutions. Dont have your school gi, dont come.

In most cases its about money. I know schools that u have to buy the gi from them, of u have to have a specific brand. A gi is a gi. Realistically a gi is just glorified workout clothes.
