Great way to suppliment . . what I learned today is . . . what works here may not work there ( I live in Massachusetts) zone 5 . . this will work for me and its great for me to do this before the flow.. after all a bee pollen patty will not be consumed if not needed . . I compare it to spending cash.. ( natural pollen) is cash . . a Bee pollen patty is like a credit card . .its there if bees want and need it.. ( what if it rained for 24 days . . you get it.... Bee keeping has no rules . . results are not published... bee keeping is a time sensitive game... if you cheap out.. thats what you get . . Remember your a bees are a product of thier own environment . . this is great info . . .Thank you Tony

Amen..well stated...there are interruption in the pollen supply..in south Louisiana, natural pollen has been coming in for some time. I use ultra bee patty and powder. I try to keep powder in feeders in yards most of the time. If they do not need it they will not use it. When several days of inclimate weather the patty makes a difference. When natural pollen is wet the powder is there. Never heard of any expert who thought it was optional. Can't wait to try your patty recipe. Love your videos and the comments. Shirt looks great..I have one just like it.

Here in Northern California, if you have a pollination contract with Almond producers, you started feeding pollen last week to ramp up brood production. February 1st comes fast. I got a phone call in the middle of the video but I caught most of it. You hit the nail on the head as far as pest management. But I would add that maintaining bees is all about thermodynamics. During winter, you want your colony small not only to manage pests, but also to regulate hive temperature. There is a critical mass past which a colony cannot maintain brood production which causes hive weakness or death. This time of year, 4-6 weeks before first bloom, is when I ramp up brood production with supplemental pollen. I won't recommend any brands, because they aren't paying me haha. But the purpose is not maintenance as I've heard some "KZbin Bee Experts" say. It's so when nectar starts your bees are in 5th gear, ready to hit the flowers.

I’m currently feeding pollen patties to my bees and they are eating it rather slowly, I also have a pollen feeder hanging with Ultrabee in it and the bees are not consuming any of the Ultrabee but here in central Alabama my bees are still bringing in pollen. I think they may be getting it from dandelions since I’m seeing a lot of those blooming lately. I’ve been wondering if I was doing the right thing by feeding the patties so Thanks Kamon for this information!

very nice expression, we have been beekeeping for years, the biggest reason why my strong hives go to the son before the honey flow is because the pollen is low, so if I give reinforcements, it will not go to the son.

How it works for me. Central Illinois. Put pollen sub in hives in mid to late march. They're already brooding and it makes them brood heavier. By maple and dandelion time I've got voo coo bees where if I didn't feed the pollen sub...I'd be way behind. I get an early crop from dandelions. Not much but it's a positive.

I literally just commented about this. Thermodynamics IS bee management. Where you live is critical in determining when you would start supplementing for brood production. You'd have to do research as to when your first blooms are in your area. I aim for 4-6 weeks before then for supplemental pollen feed so when it first hits my hives are ready to hit it hard.

Ultimately you can make you own sugar bricks for a fraction of the price and if you want you can add some protein to them.

Can I mix the 2:1 with dry Bee-Pro pollen to make patties? Is it okay to eyeball it to get a good constancy, or is the sugar-water-pollen ratio important? @@kamonreynolds I'm not the one making misleading video's on you tube, pollen sub should have specs of around 23% protein & 8% fats, they also should have the right kind of fat. Good sub will be consumed when there is a pollen flow! What's the profile on the sub you are feeding in your video ?
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 3 жыл бұрын
@@wendyjarrett903 All I can tell folks is what I know or think I know. Correct, incorrect, partly correct. That is it. I do know more now then I did when filming this video. Ultra-bee can be kicked out during heavy flows and yes that likely is due to inferior quality and low fat count but what am I supposed to do? Tell folks to buy a semi load of yours? Make their own? Don't bother feeding? There are thousands of people who want to become beekeepers and beekeeping has never been harder and the great information is hard to come by. Furthermore, the great info is lost and scattered among the treatment free dribble, essential snake oils, and lazy beekeeping gurus because pros like you are too busy making a living which has left the education of today's beekeepers to lesser educators. When I filmed this I was driving a semi full time, running 300 hives, attempting to learn and get out of the truck, and trying to be a good dad and husband. I'm doing my best. Not looking for pity, I imagine everyone goes thru this if they work and try to make something of themselves. I appreciate the % on proteins and fats. As you know it would take a significant amount of time for me to even get a sub that could compare to the average one on the market much less something like yours. I don't fully understand what it is you want. Belittling me doesn't do anything for you business wise. Me promoting Nutra bee likely wouldn't do much either. If I tell everyone: "this is what is best for bees" but they will never know until someday someone creates a great product that is available for all beekeepers. I am always willing to learn especially from those who do. Heck, I'd pay for info that actually made a difference. God knows I have paid for crap. At this point I believe overall I am doing more good than harm to small scale beekeepers whom by and large are scared to even use a pollen patty. I will continue to get better especially with my new professional beekeeping comrades who tell me my shortcomings often. I am always open to insight from doers and innovators to beekeeping even when it comes in a condescending form. My offer still stands on speaking if you ever decide to do that kind of thing. Or darn you can do a live chat with me like Ian did Both gigs pay.

Kamon I have been a beekeeper for decades and was a successful commercial operator of over 1100 colonies...thank-you for your video tutorials, you are helping a lot of new people!!! Ultra bee as far as I am concerned is the best pollen sub to date and is widely used in my area of Saskatchewan Canada.. usually fed dry in feeding stations to supplement the stored bee bread that remains in the hives or early pollen flows...it makes a huge difference every single year...I used Mann lake patties with pro health last fall on strong colonies to boost my colonies nutrition and replace the old field bees...the bees devoured it and went into winter very strong...as well I fed "Hive Alive" in the sugar syrup to boost the bees health and keep any Nosema in check...I checked on my bees in the indoor wintering facility about 10 days ago and there are bees all the way across down to the bottom board...here's hoping they look that good in April when we bring them out of winter quarters. You are doing great..keep up the good work with your videos...there are many more of us that enjoy your content than the few armchair critics that that cannot offer constructive opinions in a nice way!
