If you’re new to jazz. . .or to Kanade; then watch her once doing this vid, then play it again and closing your eyes, just listen. Listen to the impeccable time keeping, the off beat work, the use of every drum and cymbal, the precision of the fast parts, the subtlety of the soft parts. Become a fan of Jazz (as I did just a few years ago) and realize what you’ve missed all your life. This kid is not just a good drummer for a teenager; she’s one of the best damn drummers in the world. For me, this is like watching Micky Mantle when he was playing little league. I love it.

*"...she’s one of the best damn drummers in the world."* She's up there alright. She was already up there when she was 11, at the Hit Like a Girl show.

That's true. One of the best, that's what I just thought! - IMHO, Kanade is like an "improved version" of, say, Jonathan Moffett. Senri perhaps is more like, say, Elvin Jones??

I agree 100%! To show you how old I am, I saw the Brecker Brothers in concert back in the 70s! I was surprise that Kanade even knew about them, given the year she was born. She is an absolute joy to watch and since I am a drummer, I know exactly what it takes to get to that level of playing. I saw her play this song when she was 9 years old, and that's just impossible.

Hard to believe, but you just keep on getting better and better Princess Kanade. Your performances are spot on and your skill level is so impressive that if we closed our eyes and listened to you play and someone that has been playing professionally all their lives, we would not be able to tell the difference. Happy belated birthday Kanade and thank you (and Masanori) for continuing to post your videos and allowing us to share in the joy that you bring us with your drumsticks. Absolutely wonderful. And you have truly grown into the beautiful Princess that your mother dreamed of when she placed that tiara on your head when you were little; the world is yours Kanade, and your family of followers that love to watch you play keeps getting bigger and bigger. Bravo Princess!!!

Well, music class is compulsory in Japan for all elementary schools; there is one full time music teacher in every school, no matter what the size. Then, from Jr. high and high school, all schools offer music classes. A lot of boys do the sports but many girls take music classes. And in high school, you are kind of expected to do after school clubs, so many students join school band or other music bands together. They really do a good job with music curriculum in Japan. Kanade is an exceptional case, her father is a producer and she started playing drums from 3 or 4 years old. She is a prodigy.

Looking at this from a perspective other than that of her amazing technical ability... playing live with the band, the drummer is the anchor that holds everything together but in her case she must follow what’s already there. A totally different set of circumstances that add to the difficulty which she absolutely nails. Unreal:)
