@tb7667 don't get me wrong I am over the moon that youngy signed till 2033 because of the absolute gun he is and the type of player he is. However with contract extensions kane is right I think they're should be 4-5 year contract extensions maximum at a time. Coming from the US it is very odd here that they do contract extensions like that and another one is teams losing on purpose to tank to the bottom and get high draft picks.......weagles. Another one that shouldn't happen is allowing big games to end in a draw which is the stupidest thing ever. They had to change it back in 2010 because of the grand final draw and it costed St Kilda a premiership and wasted fans money. They should add on 5 minutes intervals of extra time and not allow games to end in a tie. Whoever has the most after extra time wins. Simple

Clubs just need to grow a pair. When you sit a player down to sign a contract you make it crystal clear they're getting the safety net of money, but they're giving up the power and clubs will always put the club first. Then when they start to whinge and complain the club can look them in the eye and say you signed what you signed. I get the agents, sponsorships etc all play a part but at the end of the day clubs need to stand their ground. You signed the deal, get the other club to pay overs to our liking or you're staying.

Not really, we can estimate and speculate but the point of the discussions mostly are about the length of the contracts or the issues surrounding players going into long contracts. Hayden Young was already contracted and then they sign him until 2032.

@@tb7667 exactly, risk and reward. Risk is you’ll be stuck paying out the next 7 years on a contract for a player who can’t play anymore. Reward is slightly better salary cap. The risk outweighs the reward by a lot.

As a long suffering diehard Freo fan I think Kane might be selling Hayden Young a little short. 8 years is a long contract extension but this guys' ability to switch play with his kicking,(and long kicking),is as good as any in the comp.

Wait, how does Kane not understand that you absolutely recalibrate your expectations based on teams recent results. Yeah, don't give them a pass, but you should still predominantly review recent accomplishments

The old contracts were too short and now they are getting too long. The problem with the free agency and the out of contract model is that the big clubs can buy the star players so you have to over pay players and then underpay others to avoid getting into a list loss position. It's easy to manage the salary cap when you have big corporates that can offer extra benefits. Some points system needs to come into play for buying clubs before it gets to a point where it is way out of hand and too far to pull back. Young is an outstanding player so a 5 year - 6 year contract would not be unreasonable. More than that is impractical.
