Volkswagen mechanic here in Australia who owns a my13 UP! They are such great little economical cheap cars to commute in especially with todays fuel prices. A full 35 litre tank of fuel here lasts me about 4 weeks before needing to refuel it. Anyways I also wanted to say respect to your hustle as a business owner mate. I know how hard work can be under the hoist let alone on your back on different folks properties so much respect.

Thanks to the Clutchfather for making my life easier once again, just did this on the missus' Polo. Quick scan through the video sped my job up, probably would have struggled to find the cheeky bolt behind the starter motor. Fairly easy one though - light little 5 speed on a 3cyl (probably more room on the polo as well). Had her back on the wheels in around 5 hrs cheers again Kev lad.

On top of the gearbox. You have to pump in in under pressure. You cannot simply fill it up

Brilliant video. My Citigo needs a clutch and watching this video has made me realize a few truths. I'm time poor, I don't have sufficient knowledge and i'd need to spend a few quid on some decent tools. Those three things combined will take me to a local garage to get the job done properly rather than me spending a week trying to bodge it. Sometimes we have to accept our limitations!

Hi Kevin, very nice work. I've done quite a few clutches in my life too. It's fun to watch it on film now. I see that you give grease to the clutch shaft and do not give it to the shaft cover sleeve where the thrust bearing moves. During operation, the lining of the disc wears and dust settles between the shield and the bearing, causing it to seize. I had such cases very often, sometimes there was even a damaged impression paw. Now I'm retired and it's nice to see you work efficiently. I ran a car workshop for many years, hence my interest in the automotive industry. I bought myself a restoration car with my birth year being a 1954 Morris Minor. I imported it from Sweden and am already working on it. Greetings from Poland - Adam

Thanks a million, did my clutch last weekend with help from your video. Seems to have resolved my cold crunchy first and reverse, if they went in at all on my 2013 with 70000km. Used Liquy moly MTF 5300 70W-75W that matches VW spec and it seems to work perfect with the shifting 😊

I went home and had a ponder over that car and because it was the first time I’d done one so I’ve watched the videos a few times and have come up with new ways of tackling the next one. But you’re right it was a fiddly un-German like design.

I have a completely shot clutch in a Citigo after my wife had a puncture and they were trying to urgently move the car, in fact they were urgently trying to get to see a family member in hospital. The clutch has now gone it seems ( very burny smell ). It doesn't make any noise but just like a little vibration feel. Fortunately she doesn't need the car now as she also had Cancer and in remission and signed off until middle of year so I have some time. With my other car being a Skoda 2.0TSi though it was nice to have a small car handy. I'm wondering about doing this myself but just too cold for now, wonder if anything else I'd need to consider for taking this on myself. I've done tons of car work, never a clutch but this seems to be the sort of small car to do it on

Hi, im not sure if you will respond but will chance it. I have a Seat Mii, and I think I need to get my clutch and flywheel changed. Took it to the garage and told me my engine is a write-off as its my pistons and valves only after 200K kilometres, which I just refuse to believe. Noise seems to be coming from behind the enginge exactly where the clutch seems to be located. Other garages have told me it could be my throttle body or flywheel, but a lot of the comments here seem to have experienced a similar issue. I hear a rattle on cold start, and then it goes away after warming up. Also, when I am driving at low RPM in 1st gear, there is an initial rattle that sounds like the rattle on cold start but goes away when driving at higher speed. Sometimes, it's difficult to go into reverse and have to play around with it to get it to go in. Your response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Ideally 75w90 .. fill it through level plug. Once it starts overflowing that’s the correct amount.

Hi. Ty for the video. I have a question. I'm pretty sure my UP needs to get the clutch changed. Because when I start the car there is a lot of rattling, and it disappear when I press in the clutch pedal. But my car also makes a kind of high rattle noise when I get from about 2500 to 3000 rpm in all gears, except for 5 gear i think. Can that also be the clutch making that noise? I hope it's just that and not something else wrong with the car, like the transmission.

This car was designed to have a rear engine in the trunk. That's why the trunk is so deep btw. Later they changed the plan and fit the engine in the front. Maybe that's part of the problem?

VW had a problem with the early UP!'s. The clutch would not disengage from a cold start. This lead to 'crunching' when trying to select forward and reverse. VW did finally solve the problem after complaints.

It's a shame the Up!/Citigo/Mii seems to be one of the most fiddly cars to work on I've seen you do, Kevin. How much is it down to the tiny engine bay? I remember last year you did a Polo with the same engine/gearbox combo, was that just has bad or was the design/access just that much better? I promise to baby my Mii's clutch.....🤣

Very restrictive engine bay. But that oversized starter motor for 1.0l engine is the same as for the 1.6 version. And the battery tray design is definitely not German. Hi think they’ve cheated on this mix and match combo. It’s definitely not VW.

@@WMCS Yeah sounds like a hodge-podge led by the bean counters! Did this UP! have Stop-Start and that explains the oversized starter I wonder? I think the battery tray with the ECU attached might have changed with the late 2016 facelift. I do fear the TSI engine UP! models would be even worse for access though😯

Hi Kevin, I have submitted an enquiry for a price for replacing a clutch on VW UP 2013 Automatic. Have you done a video for removing an automatic gearbox which I assume would be slightly different than a manual gearbox as you have the control unit and too many wire looms to remove. Do I have to be careful to remove any wires and special auto items above and below the gearbox. Thanks
