Kanonenfieber is fucking incredible. I'd give you more specific recommendations, but frankly you simply can't go wrong with any of their songs. They just released their second album less than a month ago, and it's almost certainly going to be my album of the year.

Lyrically Kanonenfieber is extremely good. I have the special Vinyl edition of the newest album and the artbook has comments with background info to each song written in german and english. Panzerhenker and Der Maulwurf are both really good songs too if you want to check them out more

Yes, by the way, Kanonenfieber is entirely WW1 based, all of their songs/lyrics are based on a bunch of correspondence letters and stuff one of the band members found, so you know it's authentic as fuck, in their live performances, they dress up in WW1 style uniforms, complete with their band logo as the label on their uniforms, I fucking love this band.

If you like Kanonenfieber that much, you should definitely check out the song Yankee Division. It has Trevor Strnad on guest vocals too. ;) Other awesome songs are Kampf und Sturm, Die Schlacht von Tannenberg or Grabenlieder. Basicaly their whole discography is phenomenal.

In the First World War, Austrians who were unfit for the Austrian army joined the German army as volunteers. This is how Hitler got into the German army. In the Second World War, Austria was occupied by the Germans, but the population stood cheering in the streets. Historically, both are Germans and the Austrians hoped to get back the territories they had lost in the First World War. As "ethnic Germans" (Volksdeutsche) they had to join the German army as normal soldiers.
