First time I heard this song, 20 some years ago, I was "hangrily" driving back from a client's site at the end of a hot day, triyng to get quickly to the office to do overtime hours of paperwork. This came out the radio. Imediate chills. I listened carefully. Pulled at the first stop with a diner, had coffee and pie, called my mom, watched the sunset and never went back to the office that day. Couple months later changed to a less stressful job. Music can change lives.

"All your money won't another minute buy" is perfectly valid English, just not common in modern vernacular. If you read old novels, you'll see writing like that all the time.

As others have already remarked, yes, whilst not the contemporary vernacular, that line is grammatically correct 'King's English'. As for this beautiful song... it has always touched me deeply, but it has now taken on an added poignancy, since I am terminally ill; it is a bittersweet but apt reminder that, 'all we are is dust in the wind' (change is the only constant in the universe, and all things pass, and pass away).

As an early GenXer, my generation knew the music of our time was great. It was the backdrop and soundtrack of our lives. We appreciated it as a normal part of our lives. Looking back now, I see with true clarity, the time was truly special. At present we are living in a musical wasteland with an oasis here and there of genius. Humanity has been devolving as a species for the last 30 years with the pursuit of money over values and morals. We have been fractured into smaller and smaller groups by things like the ubiquitous internet. I am hopeful lately, having seen artists like Ren and Chinchilla. Having said all of this, I don't think we will ever see the likes the previous era of music again and that makes me sad.

The phrase, "And all your money won't another minute buy" is a more poetic way to say it. It also sounds more Shakespearean as he often rearranged subjects and verbs in his writing (i.e., instead of “I hit fairly” he'll say, “Fairly I hit” and “To his good friends thus wide I'll ope(n) mine arms"”). It changes the rhythm of the line and the emphasis of the sentence and as you mentioned sometimes to make it rhyme. I think both reasons are used here. I suspect similar phrasing may occur in other languages and might cause some confusion to a non-native speaker. Needless to say your command of English is excellent and your accent is perfect and until you mentioned it I wouldn’t have ventured to say that you’re not a native speaker.

You need to hear more of Kansas asap. They fly even higher than in this one. The level of talent, in every single member, is staggering. If had to pick only one band for the rest of my life, it'd be them. If you listen to several more, you'll understand. Every song from either "Leftoverture" or "Point of No Return" is amazing. So doesn't even matter which ones you pick. Fr. The vocals, the musicianship, and the lyrics are all stunning. 🙏

Next you need to react to Kansas' "The Wall". It's another thought-provoking song. Also Carry on Wayward Son, Portrait (He Knew), No One Together, Song for America & The Point of Know Return are all great musically & lyrically. The song Portrait is about Albert Einstein. The blonde headed guitarist, Kerry Livgren, wrote most of the lyrics & melodies of their songs.

I have to say that this was my first finger-style song. Interestingly, I bought the original sheet music back in the 70's and there is something that bugs the sh.. out of me! Near the end of the 1st verse, where the words are "I close my eyes... only for a moment, and the moment's gone." It's G/B C G Am G Dm7 Am... not ...Dm Am. You can even see the guitarist in the video play it this way (Dm7 via a bar of the B- & e-strings at 1st fret and the G-string at the 2nd fret, making a simple transition to the trailing Am by rolling the bar off to just the B-string 1st fret and adding the D string 2nd fret). Try it! It's so much easier AND the difference in sound for the song is striking! BTW, You being a writer and loving the story lyrics can tell, I can't recommend enough the tune 'Wild West End' by Dire Straits. Mark Knopfler's voice isn't "beautiful", but think of his voice as the accompaniment and translator to his master finger-picked Fender Stratocaster guitar work... Use the studio version. You can search on KZbin for ( T4Ad_J_2l0w?si=gN8gICr441VTAmYD ) 😁

I mean, if you think about it, an awful lot of music *_probably will_* outlast the Pyramids. If it was on the radio, broadcast in all directions, it may be out there in space, able to be picked up, long after the Earth itself is consumed by our Sun going supernova. I mean, that's 5 billion years or so down the road, so really more of an academic question.

Glad you are finally doing Kansas. The phrasing "Not another moment would your money buy" sounds awkward because it is taken from the Bible (Ecclesiastes 1:3-4). Kerry Livgren, who writes many of the band's lyrics studied Christianity in depth (as well as other religions). Kansas are crazy talented trained musicians with a deep catalogue. They are still touring too!

I see you listened to the acapella version of 'In The Air Tonight' but not the original. WHAT? Even if you know the tune catch Collins LIVE 2004 from Paris. One of the best performances ever recorded. Mike from Mike and the Mechanics was on with Collins in Genesis. Another group you need to feature.

If you're going to do some Kansas reactions, The next obvious song is Carry on my wayward son, which is an awesome song no doubt. But you can pick any song off of "Leftoverture" and it will blow your mind! Definitely do a reaction to "The wall" it's very moving!

And all your money won’t another minute buy is just a poetic way of saying something. It’s proper English.

"All your money won't another minute buy," is a grammatically correct English sentence. It is not the common way a modern, English-speaking person would likely say it, but it's correct. You see that kind of sentence structure in Shakespeare quite a bit. It is kind of a poetic variation, or a style used in storytelling. I could say, "To the store I went." Or, it could be written, "To the store, I went." "I needed some cleaning supplies, so to the store I went."

If you are looking for great song writing and alternative rock since more than 44 years than have a look at New Model Army. Start with "I love the World" or the recent one "First Summer After".

"All your money won't another minute buy" may be more grammatically correct than you think. Nevertheless it does make it rhyme and it's more poetic.

I did reflect more on it after reading some of the comments and it definitely makes a lot more sense now. And it is more beautiful and poetic for sure.

Dear friend, if the angel of death kindly knocks on your door, all your money wont buy you another minute. Or as we say in Germany, THE LAST SHIRT, YOU WEAR, HAS NO POCKETS. EfG

From an interview with Kerry Livgren, the guitarist and lyricist (on the left in the video): It actually has a really interesting, almost humorous history, which is in such contrast to what the song’s about, but it actually, I was trying to improve my skills as an acoustic guitarist. I’ve always been an electric player. And I came up with this, uh, finger exercise, which was basically Dust in the Wind. I was sitting in my music room practicing and my wife kept walking by the room and she’d stick her head in the door and she’d go “You’d better do something with that”. And I said “Honey, this is just an exercise. This is not going anywhere. You know, this is just something to improve my skill.” And she kept bugging me and finally she said “Put some words to that, sing a melody, because I’m telling you, you really got something there.” So I happened to be reading a book of Native American poetry, and I don’t remember which one it was, but it, there was a particular poem I was reading that was alluding to the fact that, you know, our life here, our physical life, is just this brief thing, and also the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible, it says all is vanity, and uh, for some reason that just seemed to go with that melodic line. So I threw it together, literally threw it together, and again came in the last day of rehearsal, and the guys were all there. And you know Kansas is this big, progressive, heavy, rocking band, and I walk in with this acoustic guitar and say “OK, Vicky says, you know my wife says I need to play this for you guys.” And so I sit down and I played the song for them on the acoustic guitar, and I sang it, which if anything was going to kill the song, that would do it, and I looked up when I was done and the guys were all, just kind of had this blank look on their faces and they said “Where has that been?” I said, “What do you mean? You liked that thing?” And they said “Absolutely - we gotta do this.” And I literally wrote the string arrangement in a motel room down the road from the studio, ‘cause I was trying to figure a way to include the violin in the song, and we were doing a session that afternoon, and I just wrote the string lines in a motel room in Nashville.

It means to me ,that no matter how much money you have, you are still going to die and become Dust in the Wind.

Lovely song, but wow, how incredibly depressing. And more sadly still, even "the Earth and Sky" won't last forever. They will be incinerated by the expanding Sun in about 5 billion years. 😟
