I loved this game, despite all the glitches. It would have been better if they expanded upon the abilities more and made the game longer, but still this was a fantastic game. Also loved the soundtrack!

I'm having a complete blast with this game. It's nothing groundbreaking but really scratches that 3D platfomer itch. However, there is a very annoying glitch that affects the Switch version, and from what I've heard, the PS4 version too. That being the autosave not always working when it should, so players are losing hours of progress. It affects my Switch version, but not my PS5 version. Fortunately, Tate are aware of the issue and are also actively listening to fans regarding other glitches too. A patch has just been released for the Steam version and they advise to expect it on other platforms too very soon. If you can look past these issues however (and after they get patched), this is a real gem for anyone who loves those ps1 and early ps2 platformers.

THANK YOU! Seriously, I forgot that you were going to review this. I was a little hesitant on picking this up because of the mediocre reviews. I think I'll play it on the PS5 since my PC isn't the best. Fire, Ice, Wind, Heart! GO PLANET! Sorry, I couldn't resist. Hopefully this game gets patched. Missing sound doesn't sound too bad. I'd be more frustrated if other game mechanics didn't work. I hope the game works when I play it.

I’m on the third level, and I gotta say, it’s pretty buggy for me. Like I miss platforms that I should have latched onto constantly. The lack of polish is annoying. I do understand that it’s from a small studio tho and it’s the kind of game I’ve been wanting

The reason why i never played platformers during the era of 3D platformers is mainly because i saw them as as the same ugly 3D poly art games that were trying to copy Mario 64's success. But i am HAPPY that 3D platformers are making a comeback in the modern age thanks to more colorful and expressive models, quality of life gameplay and MUCH needed updates to older systems. I do wanna get this game when i can!

I don't even care for the small bugs as long as they are not gamebreaking or tied to framerate. What I don't like in this game however is the camera in tight spaces that clip through walls. That prevents you from seeing what is in the room you're in. That's REALLY annoying. Other than that, I'm having a lot of fun with it. I'm glad small teams are doing projects like these, that seems like a work done by a bigger team. Huge respect.

Never played original Kao games - never heard of them before 2022 version was announced - so I can't compare it to the originals, but I really enjoyed this one. There were some moments where the game felt a little unpolished, but the only major instances were one time I softlocked myself in a bush and one time it crashed during combat, and thankfully during both times I didn't lose anything (although I did have to traverse the levels I was in again). There are definite QoL features that should have been there, like the ability to manually save for one, the ability to see how many Eternal Wells and Chests are in each level (for some reason these alone are excluded, Wells aren't such a big deal but I'm currently 5 Chests down and they could be ANYWHERE), and the placements of invisible walls could be better. The elemental powers were a nice gimmick but it's kinda sad they didn't really have any impact on combat, the way Ty's elemental boomerangs do. The gems were just there and didn't really offer any reward for collecting them, so outside of a 100% run there's no real incentive to go for them. Overall though it was a solid experience. Cool level designs, lots of exploration and rewards for searching off the beaten path, fun platforming and combat, and creative boss battles. Story was simple and to the point, not anything too great or too bad, but it feels like there were some scenes missing between Kao and the Eternal Gloves in the last world.

Thanks so much for the insiteful review! This is obviously 100% on my list to pickup as I tried it out at pax and really enjoyed it. The level design you've showed makes me wanna pick it up tonight and play, as bugs don't bother me a whole lot but it would be great to play the game without the bugs you listed. It definitely screams jak and Daxter. I LOVED that game and actually went back to that game in 2020 during covid and 100% completed that game. Was loving the game and finished it. So I then decided to do a clean up of the remaining trophies for the platinum. I needed 3 more trophies for platinum (healthy, between worlds and health insurance). I done what was required of all these trophies and nothing popped. I then read online that it is bugged and could be potentially fixed by starting a new game and they would unlock in the tutorial as one user said it had worked for them. Starting a new game completely wipes your current progress without any warning that it would do this whatsoever. I assumed, like any other game, it would be a seperate save file when starting a new game but no. It deletes all your current progress and can not be recovered. So I went from doing what was required to platinum the game to being right back at the start as if I had just first loaded up the game. Yes the game has quite a few bugs but did not deter the fun I had with the game massively. But this has completely overshadowed which was a very laid back and pleasant game. I’m aware that it is a small studio but a game should never be sent out with gamebreaking flaws such as this. If I want to platinum the game I have no choice but to completely do the game all over again. Which I won’t be doing, as who’s to say the same thing will not happen again and I would have wasted my time once again.

I played it day one on Switch and I've been able to deal with all the shortcomings and enjoyed the game until one issue popped up and made me put down the game until I can get the absolute guarantee that it's fixed. After finishing the lava tunnel level to get that wrench, I went back to the other levels and got all the collectibles, including the ones in hub area and the lava level. I also picked up that retro costume on the way. Before I headed to the next hub, I shut the game down to play later. Starting the game back up again, all my progress after starting the lava level the first time was lost, as if I never started that level, eventhough I finished it twice. Hours of progress gone. THIS IS BAD! This frustrates me mostly because I did enjoy the game up until that point, but it soured me to the point of not wanting to touch it ever again. I believe a reviewer from either GameXplain or Nintendo Life encountered a similar issue on Switch where he beat the final boss and starting the game up again to go for 100%, all his progress beyond starting the lava level was lost. This could very well be a Switch exclusive bug. I really want this fixed.

I completed this game last week and I'm happy to report that some of the bugs you mentioned were ironed out. I didn't have any sound issues, or enemy clipping. The most annoying bug for me, that's still in the game, was that hooks didn't always drop you according to momentom, but could send you sideways and make you fall to your doom. Overall I enjoyed the game, although I felt that the writing and story could use a little more love. Dialogues felt very basic and kiddiefied (I know that all in all it's a kids game, but we still did have some great writing from games like that), and the deliveries felt often flat (I was playing Polish version, but switched back to check the English one from time to time). The story could have been fleshed out more, as for most of the game we didn't really know what we were doing. Most of the stuff in the story was just there, without any explanation. Overall I liked the game, and I'm happy for Tate Media's comeback, as I played the original game back in the day.

On PC it's almost flawless which is no surprise given that it was aimed at PC first then ported to console. Plus with the latest patch all bugs are pretty much gone. How come noone ever talks about Snakepass? One of the most underrated platformers! The physics puzzles are brilliant. Shame that game didn't get the attention it deserved. Cant wait to see the next platformers in Unreal 5. A Jersey Devil or Tiny Tank reboot in UE5 would be unreal no pun intended lol

The one bug I dont like the most has to be a saving bug. I have the Series S and Switch versions, and both versions dont consistently autosave. Ive had to replay the first 2 levels about 5 times as a result.

I feel bad you bought this on PC. I've had none of those bugs or glitches on PS4. I can guarantee that aside from some slight issues with some audio being a bit louder than voices it had none of the issues you said. I personally see PC gaming as very dicey. It just seems more issues crop up because of how much more can go wrong with a computer than a console.

a lot of us also have issues with save data, for example: I made it to the 2nd area, came back the next day and most of my save data was lost, so I played til I got to the 3rd area on that day, next day, the exact same problem, it really kills the game for me that the game doesn't want to save your progress now this has happened me twice and I haven't played the game since,. Ledge jumping…. It took me 27mins to complete well 10 because kao would decide to ether not grab any ledge and so I would fall too my death, or for some unknown reason the ledge would push me into oblivion!!! I eventually did it 14 lives later, and when I did rng my way to the top i did it in UNDER 2 MINUTES!!!!! Ahhhh!!!! That was soo frustrating!! Also I fell out of the world twice, and got stuck behind ribs like 4 times. It’s a good game, but yeah polish is lacking!

The game was enjoyable until 1 thing happened. I made it to the Ice world, collecting things, then suddenly the screen goes black. My xbox started to update. So I figured I'd just come back to it later. There is no manual save either, so obviously I figured the auto save would be fine. A little later I came back to find that my progress was gone. I 100% the 1st and 2nd area and was working on world 3. I was reset to the beginning of world 2. I lost so much progress because the auto save did not work. And it wasnt because my xbox decided to update either. According to other reviews I saw, others had the same issue of it resetting them back to the beginning of world 2 when they took a break from it. I enjoyed the game dont get me wrong, but losing that progress really sucked.

This feels like one of those games that I can forgive some of it's flaws because the main character is so charming. Yeah, I know there's other platformers that are technically better like Spark 3 or Hell Pie. They have okay protags, considering how oversaturated gaming is with generic human characters, but Kao is just adorable. I may buy it in the future in spite of its flaws.

Oof, the sound glitches ruined it for me. So many sound effects and music stopped playing all the time and I got my progress erased suddenly when the autosave malfunctioned. Started off so promising too, but the entire ‘feel’ of the areas was totally gone without the music. There’s only so long I enjoy exploring the confusing corridors with nothing but Kao’s grunts to accompany me.

This is weird. usually when a game has this many obvious lack of polish problems the game itself sucks or is "ok" at best.
