Kara- thank you for being vulnerable and opening up about your decision/uncertainty regarding not wanting to have children. Just because for so long there’s been a social narrative that women are supposed to have kids doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone or that every woman wants to. You are a role model in showing that you don’t need to be a parent to be fulfilled and there is nothing wrong or abnormal about that!!

I'd love to hear more about Kara's perspective. I'm 35 and still undecided but it weighs on me.
@Natalie_Explores Жыл бұрын
@oliviacarriveau I'm also 35 and decided I don't want children. I talked about it with a therapist and everything because it stressed me out so much! My husband is luckily ok with not having them (and my therapist says i need to believe him lol!). I thought I'd want them by now, but the older I get the more I don't want them. But, in the future if I ever decide I want children then I'd rather foster so that I can provide a safe and loving home for someone who needs one, and to be a foster mom! The option to become a mother I believe comes in many forms, so even if I decide to not having any now, the option will always be there. But at this point in time, I'm happy being child free. 😊
@lisab2856 Жыл бұрын
I agree...thank you Kara! The more people that talk about it being an option, the more normalised it will become to feel it's an option. I'm 55 and my husband and I have been happily married for 30 years. We chose not to have kids because we never felt the urge to and we love travelling, our hobbies and our freedom. Not only have we never regretted it, we just are more and more grateful for the decision as time goes on. We have no debt, both work and just have so many options with what we can do with our lives. We're very happy to be the cool auntie and uncle who are always travelling...love it!

@@lisab2856thank you for posting this! I am 32 and am pretty sure that I do not want kids, but I feel sometimes like there is something wrong with me. All of my friends are having or getting children.. it is nice to read that someone else that chooses not to have children is very happy with it 😄
@lisab2856 Жыл бұрын
@@Dojanne My pleasure! Luckily there is so much community and information around the choice to not have children now. I've never personally met anyone who has chosen to not have children who has regretted it, but I've met several women who have had children who were violent towards them, became meth addicts or ripped them off financially to a point where they were never going to be able to retire, who all said they very much regretted having children. Having children is definitely a gamble. Obviously it turns out really well for some people and really badly for others. The Regretful Parent pages on Reddit and Facebook are very interesting as well...A side of the experience that people tend not to be so honest about publicly. Whatever you decide to do, remember that it is your body, your life and your choice...😄Good luck!

My wife and I have been watching Kara and Nate for years, which is why we clicked on this video, but can I say as a first-time viewer that you guys did an amazing job at interviewing. You asked great questions, you let them speak without interrupting or talking over them, but also added your own insight when appropriate which allowed for natural segues to follow-up questions. There are so many bad podcasters and interviewers that talk over or move on to another question without letting the person being interviewed finish their point that it's refreshing to see someone do it so well. I'm sure it probably helps that Kara and Nate are comfortable behind the microphone, but kudos to you for allowing the focus to be on the interviewee and not the interviewer.

I 100% knew what Nate and Kara were going to say at 34.16 min in about almost being cancelled over asking for payment for early access to the documentary. When they originally posted the doc I paid for it. It made complete and total sense that they should be compensated for all that hard work... and it broke my heart that Kara was so upset over the backlash. Bottom line- people can be horrible and people can be wonderful. But Kara and Nate have a loyal fanbase who are rooting for them... I'm one of them!

I think everybody was so excited for the 100th country especially people that had been watching for years. People couldn't wait to see it and celebrate with them. When they decide to change the format right there without communicating with everyone and basically very little explanation it was a big downer for everyone that had been so excited. It really caught everyone by surprise. It was more on their side for not explaining anything.. Like Nate said it was lack of communication. Everyone loved them and would have supported them had they communicated it better. I'll admit I was surprised at first, but I still loved them, supported them and kept watching. I'm sorry it was such a hard time for them. It was a big lesson in communication with their audience. I think most people stayed with them and continued to support them.

I ended up on the other end of the fence, my husband really wanted kids and I could've gone either way, so we decided to try and ended up with the most amazing kid I've ever known. Like she said, I now could not imagine my life without her, but I'm unclear about whether to have another. Ultimately, it's just a choice that you make, you'll probably figure out how to be happy either way and either way is great. Obviously there are situations and circumstances that would sway you one way or another, but I mean in the absence of any particular reason to go one way or another.

There will always be reasons not to have kids. I would not let the environment prevent you from doing so if you are passionate about it and have the support and resources to do so. The bottom line is we can't predict the future and you don't want to look back and regret your decision once the door is biologically closed. I’m so glad Kara touched on why they don’t have kids yet. Finally someone I can relate to! Me and my husband have been married for almost 3 years and I just do not feel the urge to be a mom yet. Quite honestly, it currently gives me so much anxiety to think of having a kid right now. With that being said, I think it’s so important that women not be made to feel like we NEED to have children to feel complete in life. I might have kids one day, but I might not. Thank God me and my husband are also so much on the same page, but people have questioned us for the past 3 years non stop and I just think that’s so inappropriate. I hope the social norm of asking when a couple is going to have children stops soon.
@lijohnyoutube101 Жыл бұрын
I think raising kids is HARD and people should absolutely not have them if they don’t want them however having kids did complete me. I have 3 degrees, traveled, built a fantastic career, bought a house, and then got married and had kids. While each of those other life elements were fun and hard they were all just living a sort of empty and shallow existence. I am so very sad that so many young couples want such an empty existence for their entire lives.
@ErinHoskins Жыл бұрын
My husband and I were married for 8 years before we decided to have our son. So we weren’t the norm for waiting and we also only have one child. Luckily the people close to us knew better than to ask, and I really just tried to ignore other people or somewhat nicely let them know what an inappropriate question it is. No doubt the right decision for us to wait.
@amyj4283 Жыл бұрын
most women have to medicalize themselves so we can all pretend that children are a result of, not sex but mere Will. But that children are or should be a result of us wanting them is a mirage made possible by invasive biotechnology. The mirage of Choice marries women’s value to the marketplace, because this is where this particular morality originates and resides. A world without a sexual market, we are to believe, is a world where women have no value. This has been the message of feminisms since its 2nd-wave. If a nation decides to take away this marketplace (the contraceptives and abortions), we’ll be thrown to a Dark Age. The sexual marketplace has made women who participate in it utterly delusional and unreasonable.
@hayhay8077 Жыл бұрын
@@lijohnyoutube101 I don’t believe referring to it as an “empty existence” is exactly appropriate. It’s almost the same as people inappropriately asking and assuming everyone wants to adapt to the same lifestyle. In fact it’s kind of insensitive. To each their own. I’ll never criticize anyone for having children, I think that’s great, and I still may have children one day when I’m completely comfortable with that thought, but I’m only 22 and I’m not right now. I could also be insensitive and say I am so very sad that so many older people want to make their lives so miserable and boring by having children, but I’m not gonna say that.. lol and before you take offense to that, you reading that and feeling what you felt is exactly what I felt when I read “empty existence.” Also just to add, the 3 years I’ve been young and married I’ve been anything but empty. We’ve had the time of our lives traveling, doing and going anywhere as we please. And we get to do ALL of this at our own discretion depending on no one to have to watch children for us WHILE we are in our early 20s. It’s been SO MUCH fun. So I apologize that maybe you didn’t get that same opportunity and maybe that would result in such bitterness, or maybe you did and you’re just bitter now that you made that choice. I’m not sure because I’m not judging people based on how they want to live so I don’t know what that feels like. Honestly, I think it’s great you have children, have 3 degrees, have traveled and built a fantastic career. But just to let you know (because it seems like you’re not aware) that’s not everyone’s life goals, and not everyone would get fulfillment from that.
@lijohnyoutube101 Жыл бұрын
@@hayhay8077 oh it was tons of fun at the time. I am glad I got to travel and play as a young adult. I didn’t think it was offensive at all to say it was miserable and boring. I have not been bored, probably would have been if I was a stay at home parent. There have however been tons and tons and tons of miserable moments. Still worth it! I completely believe my 20’s were an empty existence. I am thankful for it and it built me a good life foundation and it included absolutely gobs of fun. But it was so pathetically selfish and shallow and just so empty. I could have died and have no real accomplishments. Life now is 1000’s of times harder but at least there is more depth.

So thrilled to hear Kara talk so candidly about potentially not choosing to have children - motherhood isn't the only option for women and I'm so thankful to hear her say it openly! I'm an even bigger fan of theirs now.

I absolutely LOVED Kara and Nate’s documentary. I had zero problem with them requesting donation for early access. LOVE Kara and Nate! Ignore the idiot haters who have zero understanding of what it takes to do what you do!

Totally agree. The funny thing is that nobody has a problem with it now. Patreon ect. Yes theory just did exactly the same thing with project iceman with zero backlash. Always confused me that they got so much hate for requesting a donation for something they worked so hard on

I remember when I checked the comment section for the announcement video it was confusing and still is confusing as to why their “fans” gave so much backlash

I’ve been following Kara and Nate’s journey for years and years, and me being obsessed with traveling, they really pushed me to follow my dream and travel the world. I don’t have a strong passport as they do but they have definitely pushed me travel regardless to the point that as a 19 year old, I have travelled to 31 countries. I love them so much and was a blast listening to this episode❤️

Never heard of these two before but thoroughly enjoyed this. I have to say, Kara is a natural beauty. So nice to see a KZbinr my age who isn’t filled with botox. And I really appreciated her segment about not having kids because I’m the same age and in the same boat. Totally understand feeling “behind” compared to friends with kids and houses and so much responsibility. I hated when she said she felt abnormal though cause I’m over here thinking wow how normal! Loved it! Great podcast! ❤️❤️

I started watching your podcast because you had Kara and Nate on it for Ep.27. Through this podcast I started enjoying the two of you as well. I mentioned to my 12 year old daughter that I found this great podcast (yours) and turned my iPad around to show my daughter this episode I was watching and she called you both by name and said how she loves you both. Great Job influencing both my daughter and myself a 54 year old man. I liked band subscribed.

I adore kids, but I chose not to have them and I have no regrets (I'm 60 now). These two have such a GREAT, amazing and meaningful life that they contribute in another way. They have no need of kids. I fully support that. It's not 1950 anymore. We all have choices and for some, there are just so many OTHER things they want to spend their life doing that matters. If you feel deeply that you want kids, have them, they're great. It's the hardest job on the planet to do well, so be SURE you want to spend the rest of your life doing it (cuz that 40 y/o can get divorced or widowed and have nowhere to go but your house). You can love kids and know you'd be a great parent, and still not choose to have kids, because there are other ways you want to choose to contribute to or experience the world instead. Be an awesome aunt or uncle instead! It's the best! lol Point is, it's a personal thing every person needs to decide for themselves so stop asking people when or if they're having kids. It's not your business. You never know if they've tried and failed or are still trying with anguish, so it's just a subject best left unasked (except on a podcast where it's helpful so a million people don't KEEP asking them.) lol Oh, and PLEASE never ask a woman if she's pregnant. lol Sometimes, it's just the salad she had for lunch folks. We bloat sometimes. lol

@@thesinfulyogini2073 When I see what kids have to go through today and how near impossible it is for them to buy a house or even pay rent, the online bullying, school shootings, all of it, I'm so thankful now that I don't have to try to raise a kid in this environment and try to help them navigate it all. It's not the same world we're giving them. I made the right choice for me for sure. We have too many people already and it seems so many of them are unhappy. So, go be happy and don't fret. You're awesome just as you are.

I know I’m late to the party here but also what I find refreshing and comforting is catching a long form video with wholesome people we all love and then to also jump into the comments and it’s a hug fest not a slug fest lol ❤ the first video I caught of there’s was the trans-Siberian railroad series and I’ve been hooked since they’re really great and I think an intellectual conversation without agenda is fantastic.

The podcast I didn't know I needed it, but I'm soo happy it happened. Love Kara and Nate, actually started to watch their videos in the beginning of the pandemic while pregnant during a lockdown. Watched every single one and loved it! Never miss a episode. And I also follow Matt and Abby, they are the funniest and realest couple on the YT right now in my opinion. Congrats to you four!! On a side note I am watching the video on my laptop while my toddler destroys my living room, sometimes its better to "ignore" and take care of the mess after!

I love seeing the discussion about having and not having children are both valid. I knew from 15/16 that I didn’t want to have children. I meet my husband at 21 and he supported me when I told him I didn’t want to have children. We’ve been together for 13 years and when the topic of us having children that he still defends my decision.

I always wanted to be a mom. I pictured the married, house, bio children path because that's the norm. I ended up becoming a solo mom via international adoption to a one and only kiddo. It's not at all what I pictured and I had to mourn that a second child isn't right for our family. But doing things just because it's expected doesn't make it right. You have to live for what life is rather than what you think is should be.
