Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the #travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this #travelvlog to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! After achieving our new goal of 100 countries before 2020 and all 7 continents, we have no plans to slow down anytime soon, and we are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Laying the money like that on the table is such a disrespectful way of treating the staff. Typical of Nate, he must’ve not thought it through, but it’s like tempting them unnecessarily. He’s even kept it like bait.

When she first went into the room and saw the money, she counted and said “哇靠、這麼多⋯”, which means “damn, thats a lot!” She probably later on used an app to translate the note. When Kara spoke to her about the tip, she said “its too much”, “is this even possible?”, “im scared”, “you scared me”. After the hug, she said “im about to cry”. She spoke in a respectful way.

Travel with NJ Steve it’s not the employee’s fault though in US. It’s the system shaped by the government that promotes individualism that worked but flawed now compared to many other system in the world. But singapore is a service based society. Feedback is very important and negative feedback can mean losing job and deportation and family going hungry. It’s different than many immigrants in the us. If deported they can find a way to come back, but not in singapore. Btw in us she might get beat up around this time around due to the fact that she’s chinese and immigrant..

@@waltbrown8899 It should be normal procedure for housekeeping to take photo of money in the room, both to protect staff and guests against misunderstanding. I would also like to add on that in Asia, tipping is usually more discreet. one would usually use an envelope which can be found in the hotel room drawer, or requested from the reception. When giving to waitstaff, one would usually fold the notes and pass discreetly too.

Over here in Singapore, tipping is not an obligation but very much appreciated. So she probably never have and will never receive this much of tips ever. I’d say most of the time if she even received any tips would be SGD$5-$50. Depending on how generous her employer is, USD$500 should be around half or maybe more than half of her basic salary and it’s so much amount that she dare not accept! 👍👍👍

What a lovely sentiment 💕 so many people putting themselves at risk just by doing their jobs to help take care of others. You guys are so lovely. I hope that things settle down and you can carry on virtually taking the rest of us with you on your travels. What a ride it has been!!! This time that you are spending not travelling is probably making the last few years seem even more incredible, and more surreal. You have lived a beautiful life experiencing so much more than most of us ever will. Xx

When I was a kid, we lived in South Korea. My Mom tipped a delivery boy a dollar (this was 1968) and his boss got upset because it was more than the kid made in a month. This reminded me of that moment of pure joy on his face. Thank you for the bringing back that great memory and for being such amazing people. I'm addicted to your channel and really enjoy content. I'm truly a HUGE fan!

As someone who cleans for an air bnb (though not currently, of course) and apartments, I can confirm that cleaning up after people can be nerve racking. Especially when the people don’t give AF. You deal with a lot of gross stuff.

When I I did extensive travel for my previous position, I had the opportunity to stay several nights at a nice hotel in Bangalore, India. I did something similar for the housekeeper and I had to give a written note so they knew I had actually gifted it to her. So appreciative, we forget what it is like in other countries, and we take for granted what we have here in the US. Good job, Nate and Kara!!!!!

I love this. She had such a genuine reaction. I've had people tip me a lot at work (nothing like this), but 100+ and it's made me cry before. When you're working and in the moment, you often don't think about something like this so it catches you off guard. If I'm also preoccupied and/or busy, you can get a great reaction from me!!
