Hello! Thank you for the comment. I never mentioned targets in the video, only the path of the strikes. I teach my students the skill of "Tendon Termination." This skill emphasizes to attack the biceps, triceps, and the knee. The hands or the hands that hold a weapon, is the primary target. I teach them to "Never bite the hand that feeds you, but destroy the hand that attacks you." I do teach heavily the concepts of defensive knife in these terms. Thank you for the comment!

This is without a doubt the best instructional video on the karambit I have EVER seen. Mas Guru Dennis Ocampo is a truly amazing teacher. As a first generation student of his I have learned more from him in the time I have trained with him than than my total combined martial experience of some 40 years. It is truly an HONOR to train with him !!!

I've just been introduced to the karambit, and while I have practiced with it in close-range self-defense scenarios, I hadn't seen a structured set of strikes like we do with the bastones from arnis/eskrima/kali. This is a great foundation for practicing basics, and your explanations of positioning and movement are very clear. Great stuff!

Hello Glenn. Congratulations on your karambit. Thank you for the comment. My videos I place on my channel are based upon requests. So if there is a particular skill or review you would like to see, it would be my honor to share with you what my teacher has shared with me. Continue training offensively and defensively with your karambit. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365! .

Hello Jackson. Thank you so much for your comment. According to the dictionary, a nerd is "a person who lacks social skills, esp. someone interested in technical things" Thank you so much! A compliment that actually works to my advantage. Most people don't like nerds which is an advantage because people will leave me alone... if they don't then my "technical" skills will protect me. If you think I am a bad ass... then thank you again. Looking like a bad ass and being a bad ass is two different things... since you think I look like one, that's good.. that means no one will mess with me...Thank you again for your comments. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!

Thank you, Sir. And thank you for the multiple perspectives. I have always wanted to learn from an instructor that would use multiple camera perspectives; front, left, right, back, and from above to observe all body part motions so that the student sees all motion of appendages. Imagine learning the poetry of motion, acting as one, from the instructor to the student.

Master Tim, first I would like to say congratulations on your Hall of Fame recognition. I am sure it is well deserved. Your hubad videos are very well done. The empty hand skills in the video are impressive. They are very simular to that of the Filipino martial arts siniwali patterns used in empty hand defense/offense/ and counters. Very impressive skills against the unskilled attacker which we find out in the street. The movements are simular to what I am doing with the non karambit hand which we call the 9th hand. Your movements are similar to the concept of our system minus the angular footwork we emphasize as the primary defense. Your students are very lucky to be training with you. Keep up the great work and sharing your knowledge. Again congratulations on your Hall of Fame recognition. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365.

Great question. The ring culturally was used to manipulate other tasks while still having the blade ready for its usefulness while cutting such things as vegetables. In terms of self-protection it is used for deployment from your pocket. When deployed, some practitioners use it to hold the karambit. Use what is best for you. Finger in or finger out, how you hold it is not as important as important as how you use it if you have to protect yourself or the ones you love. It is an alternative way of holding the karmbit like peolpe have altrnatives to different stances and beliefs in firearm training....Practice what is best for you. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!

Great question alto141! Yes this can be implemented with a foldable pocket Karambit. The type of Karambit is not as important as how fast you can deploy it when needed defensively. The pocket foldable Karambit is a formidable self-defense tool to use and have. Thanks for the great question!

I have NO places near where I live to learn this, and I was sold on Karambit (and Kali) when I saw some vidoes. I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to make this video. I loved it and I look forward to learning more from you in the future. I do have to say that I'm extremely rusty and so strike 4 is really confusing me but I shall certainly keep going! Keep up the great work and thank you once again.

Hello Ari. I hope you are doing well. Thank you so much for your comment. It's person's like you that motivate me to make videos like this. I too was rusty in my practice so do not worry nor give up. Keep practicing my friend to the point of no thought. Let the counter strikes flow from one strike to another. When you feel comfortable with all strikes in the learning order, then free flow from one different strike to another. Remember to use your footwork, body mechanics and how you strike when practicing. Number 4 strike is a challenge so practice it as much as you can and be sure to implement the body into the strike and not just the arm. If there are any other specific skills you want to see, let me know my freind. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!

In a Kali style fight, with that weapon, you are fighting for your life, if you are disarmed, it is likely a broken finger will be the very least of your worries. I personally like to keep the index finger in the ring just far enough to allow for retention and control, to double the range of the karambit, while being able to remove the finger if necessary...

Thanks a lot for sharing! Very good instruction indeed. I do have one question though, I noticed some instructors, in strike #2, do curve the hand and try to hit using the sharp part of the Karambit. What's opinion on that? Cheers!

Sh*t happens. If you are any good. They shouldn’t be able to get a hold of your tool for carving and method of defence. See how he is returns his hand back on each movement? It’s like when you draw a blade. Keep that sh*t close to your body. If they are stupid enough to run at you. That blade is right there snug. And... if your waving the blade around way out in front. It becomes an easy target for a kick, or something that will disarm you. And. You’re not building grip strength relying on a little metal loop. Another benefit is that you have something to “hammer fist” with, more so than if your finger was in there. As well as the pointy bit out the other end of your hand. Just some observations. From someone who is not trained.
@transatlanticsilkcottonfabrics
@transatlanticsilkcottonfabrics Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah and if it’s stuck on your finger... it’s a lot harder to throw the thing away should you need to start using your empty hands. It’s a possibility. You may need to throw the thing to get it out of their reach and your own. If it’s looped around your finger... harder. Like my dad taught me while using a machete, if you feel yourself falling... you do not want to fall on that blade. Chuck it away from you. You can pick it up later rather than impaling yourself if you fall out of a tree for instance... (I guess if you needed to get it out their reach, you could, theoretically, use them a pin cushion, jam it in the back of their leg or bum cheek, they’re gonna be hurting, they’re not so able to reach it, do what you need to do with your hands, retrieve the blade after, better with a straight blade maybe. But maybe you just need to get it out of the situation for a minute, easier if it’s not looped around a finger?) I like his simplicity? No fancy flashy bs spinning it around and all that. Just move bam move bam . Out of there. It’s so important to practice with really bad implements? Maybe the only thing you have is a pencil to hand? And you have 1 maybe 2 shots with it, before it breaks and becomes useless. Make em count. And be aware of when a tool has out lived its purpose and usefulness. To know when it is the better part of wisdom to ditch it and that you’re better of without it... and what to do after that. To know when you know it is the better part of wisdom also. (You may only be granted seconds, if that.) 🙏

Seems like a strong system. Yes the loop is handy for drawing it. But I can see the sense in not relying on it.

Also by building your grip strength, the skills are almost pretty much transferable to a straight blade in that grip. Haha excuse me thinking out loud. Stay dangerous ✌️

In other words, it's better to know the knowledge and skill and never need to use it to protect yourself, then be in a situation where you have to protect yourself and not have any knowledge or skill to survive. If you are disarmed....having a broken finger is the least of your concerns. I love the loop hole in my Fox Karambit 479. Great for quick deployment and it feels really secure in my hand when I leave my finger through it. My adversary will have to break my finger completely off in order to disarm me. Maybe my hand is different than yours. cheers bro.

Hello Derek. Yes as one progresses in the FMA, the left hand is just as important as the weapon hand. In my system that was taught to me, it it known as the 10th hand because it has 10 purposes. This hand must constantly be in movement. Thank you for the comment. Keep practicing your skills.

Thanks so very much for sharing your technique. One thing that occurs to me: If you don`t like to use the ring, then isn`t it more of an impediment in this case ? For my hands, it just gets too tight on the grip / my hand gets too close to the blade. Besides, the ring isn`t the ring meant to be a striking tool also? So I`m thinking maybe the ideal blade for your preferences is one that doesn`t have a ring in the first place.... Just wondering. Otherwise, this is really awesome to give structure to the handling of this very menacing blade. Thanks so much again.

Great question Thelema9331! You are correct!The type of Karambit you use is not as important as how fast you deploy it when needed defensively. The pocket foldable Karambit is a formidable self-defense tool to use and have. So, any karambit is useful. How you use it defensively is just as much important then the type of Karambit you have. Thanks for the great question!

Not OP, but as a chef who works with carbon steel on the daily, if you aren't into maintenance, probably go with stainless, or stain resistant carbon steel. As far as budget friendly, a little digging on eBay might be worth your while, if for no other reason than to figure out what exactly you're looking for. If you're concerned with legalities, mantis makes a good few decent single edge blades if you don't mind the 50-80$ range, and as I said earlier, eBay is a treasure trove for getting decent stuff in general on the cheap.

the karambit is just a plus to your punches. Use it like you would punching. You definitely have a point about the ring around you finger because it can stress the finger. But when used as a punching device like a roll of quarters with a cutting edge you will get better results.

I was going to say, I appreciate the methods. The finger ring not being utilised in the technique. No spinning or messing around. This is business and improving that grip strength on the handle, without relying on the ring. Good idea to practice. And with the cuts he always seems to bring it back to his zone, in tight or out of reach of who ever. Move, 1, move, back up on a 4/5. Move. Get out of dodge. Liking this channel. It seems reasonable to not use the ring while using the tool, in a situation, aside from drawing it. After creating space. I guess, the argument could be made. No matter how good you are. Everyone is a gangster until a real gangster shows up. And you may be disarmed. Or. You may need to get the weapon away from the altercation, but, it’s wrapped around a broken finger, and not easily ditchable when, the tables may have turned and you’re gonna get a beating, and it’s best no one has the knife. Especially the guy sat on top of you. Better it be held in a manner in which you could throw it out of reach while you used your hands, then got it afterwards. ✌️ stay dangerous.

Hello chris! Thanks for the comment/ question. The left hand at times is just as dangerous as the hand that holds the self defense weapon. In our system we call this the 10th hand because it has 10 purposes. They are as follows: Check, block, disarm, parry, control, pass, strike, distract, deploy, and sacrifice. The 10th hand is always in motion 10 always ready to counter defend. Great question chris! Let me know if you have any other questions. Take care and be safe 24 / 7 / 365!

How do the 12 strikes in Kali work compared to the 6 strike theory with Silat?
@stephanwatson7902
@stephanwatson7902 3 жыл бұрын
It's way more difficult to disarm with the finger in the retention ring, especially while you're handrolling (trapping) and slashing/stabbing their hands then immediately their face/throat. If someone is trying to disarm, I'd rather risk my finger getting broken, in order to better keep the weapon they could kill me with, away from them. Life>broken finger....that's why the ring is there

@evadetheblade55
@evadetheblade55 10 жыл бұрын
Hello David. Thank you so much for your comment. I totally agree with you. It is the last thing to worry about in an edged weapon situation, but I sure know that it would for one moment stop the initial thoughts of continuing the threat. At that moment, that is the premier time to take advantage of the situation defensively. All it takes is a moment of distraction. Not physically but mentally. If you have ever broken a finger, which I have it stopped my intentions at the time which was in a basketball game. I hesitated for a moment when the initial pain shock occurred and reality hit when the finger was bent in a unorthodox way which would make the normal stomach of a person turn in discuss.... So with that in thought, I agree with you. My goal is to stop the thought of the attacker from his true intentions so I can stop the threat. Thank you so much for your thoughts. Take care and be safe! Be sure to visit my other channels of evaderheblade55 and Filipino Kali Educator share these channels with others.

Saw a couple people wondering how karambits fare in real life or street combat. Think of how much force you put into a strike. Now think of how much the force is amplified by the blade sticking out from your fist. No knife or style of knife is going to be a guaranteed fight winner, but each knife shape can be used in a certain way depending on the curvature (slashing, hacking, stabbing, etc.) the karambit is good for close quarters. However, it's the persons skill that determines the fight.
