You are an excellent teacher. I will follow your instructions, memorize the names of movements, and practice the way you teach. All your movements, so well explained, will make a better golfer of me, with stronger legs, better hips movements and concentration. At 75, I need to keep all of this well oiled.. Merci

Thanks for making this video! I just started in a Shotokan dojo and starting off with Taikyoku Shodan and Heian Shodan. Got a quick lesson in class on how to do Heian Shodan, but forgot some parts and didn't catch all the details. Good thing this video exists as it allowed me to see all the little details and practice at home.

Thank you so much for this video! My friend who has done martial arts for over 25 years was training me and sadly moved away. He had taught me this whole series and it’s been a few months but this was such a great refresher I had it down in no time. Very much appreciated this! I’m hoping to get back into some more serious training soon! Blessings to you!

Something just dawned on me as someone who progressed from Shotokan to American Kenpo (long story!). This is in light of your recent videos on Kenpo. In Kenpo’s beginner kata, Short Form 1, all of our movements are retreating & we only block (no striking). The idea is that it’s a beginnner’s kata and that as an absolute beginner, distance is your friend. In Heian Shodan, though, you advance into the opponent with first Gedan Barai and then Oi Zuki. However, advancing into the opponent’s space and striking doesn’t happen in Kenpo until Long Form 1-our 2nd kata! The idea is that now you’ve built up a skill level that allows you to do so. You step into the opponent with a Gedan Barai and Gyaku Zuki combination. Interesting contrast in how the 2 styles handle beginner level kata training!

One thing that would be helpful is to place some sort of marker on the floor of the starting point. Maybe a strip of tape or something like that. This way, when the camera pans around, it will make it easier for the viewer to recognize where you are in relation to the start point.

Very well explained. I am a Shito Ryu Student (Brown Belt) who is out of practice. I am looking to revise my knowledge and practice again. Do you make Shito Ryu videos as well?

Hi brother. It’s amazing to go through this Kata with you. So many insights. Thank you. All Praise Be To God. My query: It’s after 25 years that I’m picking up Karate at 41 years, with tough training background for 5 years in my teen years. Now I find my hips are locked and all my thigh muscles are so stuck I can’t do a spin or roundhouse kick too well or none at all. So I decided to invest on mid splits to loosen the hip and thigh muscles. Do you suggest any tips on optimise my hip twist and flexibility so that my spin and roundhouse kicks come back? You are cool. Take care and talk to you soon.
