Love how a marine biologist walks her dogs off leash and would prefer to leave a hook in an eagle ray rather than attempting to remove it.
@rick507810 ай бұрын
especially a marine biologist should know that the best way to go about that is to 1 let the fisherman do his duty in releasing the ray, and 2 that its best to flip a ray onto its back so you are out of range of the stinger as much as possible and have easy access to the mouth for removing the hook. or in this case, access to the fin to remove the foul-hooked jig.

A real marine biologist should know that cutting the line would leave a length of monofilament/multifilament/fluorocarbon/etc. attached to the hook/lure. That line may subsequently entangle the ray, or get into its gills or mouth. A competent marine biologist would offer assistance to free the lure from the ray so that it can be released back to the sea. Instead, this poor excuse for a marine biologist's harrassment of these fishermen hurried them into breaking the line, which clearly they didn't want to do, possibly further harming the ray. Way to go marine biologist!

She is also in an _INCREDIBLE_ hurry to do her first and honestly, not very good, impulse which is cutting the line a mile from the hook, so the stingray has at least about 15 foot of fishing line to entangle itself and others in! I think my go-to would be to form a human wall of sorts, and protect the stingray and whoever helps it off the hook! I don't promote violence, and in emergencies only to de-escalate, so if she runs into a human wall you might need to push her away, hold her down / restrict her until the stingray is gone, as she is posing a threat to people at that point!

From what I see more schools are pushing for people to get field work, our school made it a freshman year class so it weeded out people who didn’t like it so they wouldn’t find out they hate it as seniors. I'm not a marine biologist, just a regular terrestrial biologist who took a couple of marine ecology and oceanography courses, but I feel like it is worth mentioning that most marine biologists don't need field work experience. The sad truth is, there is already so much data out there that most researchers can just use already collected datasets, and when they don't have to it's often easier to outsource it. Which sucks, because pretty much everyone who went into (marine) biology went in because they wanted to work out in nature. I remember when I did my internship I'd get to do very simple field work once a month, which apparently is quite a lot because somewhere in May my supervisor came along and I found out that that was apparently the first time that year he had gotten the opportunity to go out into the field. That being said, being a marine biologist doesn't add anything to this situation. It's just bragging about unrelated bullshit. Had she had any knowledge on how to handle the situation she would have said something like "I know how to deal with foul hooked rays" not "I'm a marine biologist"

I thought the rocks got me and spent about 5 minutes trying to work the line to get the hooks loose when the line just went wheeeeeeee. Turned out to be a stingray. It took 7 hours to land. It's wing span was 6 foot. It's tail and barb were missing, indicating that it had been caught at a younger age, debarbed, and released. We got it up into the bed of the truck and it's wings curled up the sides of the truck bed. It had to have been a southen stingray. Best day of fishing I have ever had. There was a game warden boat that approached when they saw us fighting it. They stuck around until we landed it. Stingrays are consisered an invasive species here, so the game wardens instructed us not to throw it back.

"I'm a marine biologist" answer should have been, "and I'm an experienced fisherman, please continue with your walk"

Nice of you to say that you don’t doubt her credentials, but we are all doubting internally. A marine biologist would not be so reckless when dealing with a stingray.

She absolutely needs to be charged with fisherman harassment and turned in to authorities. Im so sick of people fucking with hunting and fishing. Its a new world, people cant just agree to disagree

I recently saw a video of a guy looking for stuff underwater and he used a clear cube. Maybe 12in or so and setting it on the water it creates a really clear image. As I watched the ray go by your spot I thought man, that would have been a great way to check it out without the choppy water getting in the way.

That’s a great idea man. I’ll implement it in the next videos for sure 🤙

It's your right and your pleasure to call fish and wildlife services on people like this who interrupt your fishing, she's doing something dangerous, she's harassing you and preventing your right to access. I'm not one to quickly call the cops to handle issues but sometimes with people as brazen as this you need to catch them on it just so they know their actions have consequences and they are in fact in the wrong.

Here in the far north of NZ we get a lot of Stingrays and Eagle Rays and often hand feed them. When we hook them we beach them, flip them over and remove the hook. A couple of times a year, Orco come in and gobble them up.

If that lady is a marine biologist, I’m a unicorn. The fish is going to drown? The ranger will fine you $500 for fishing in public property? You need to cut the line loose, leaving a hook and fishing line on this fish? Letting her dogs swim in the water right next to a dangerous predator? Yeah, it doesn’t take a marine biologist to not make such rash and idiotic decisions, it just takes someone with a vague sense of intelligence, which this lady clearly lacks.

Just call pd and file charges Under the Sportsmen's Rights Act, harassment of hunters, trappers, or anglers is punishable by a fine of $200 to $2000 and/or 180 days in jail.

Give you guys credit for staying calm and polite with her. I have a hard time keeping my cool when someone like that pokes their nose somewhere it shouldn’t be. I would’ve been pretty firm and borderline aggressive to having her maintain a distance so I could safely land, and release the ray.

Btw you're an angel for those guys that hooked it, cause I wouldn't even know what I would've done either esp w Karens on the loose. Absolute legend mate

Here in South Louisiana in the US we catch Rays all the time. sucks when you have to un hook from the mouth. Lucky some of them are little enough to manage.

I don't believe that she's a marine biologist, she's just a Karen doing the puffer fish.

You'd think a marine biologist knows that you cant choose what bites your line.
