I love how Steve just pushes Karl a little bit to get a reaction. He sees that it makes for good comedy and he always brings it out at the perfect time. Also these are all out of context, which makes it look like they actually don't like each other. If you listen to the full episodes it's not as bad as it seems here.

My best friend in high school was a shit stirrer so I know what Steve means. He'd be my friend, we'd hangout, etc. knew eachother for years but he'd say shit about me to people behind my back. Shit that wasn't even true to people I didn't even know and then they'd want to kick the crap out of me for it. Gervais knows EXACTLY what was said about Steve's eyes and glasses earlier between him and Karl. He's just pretending that he doesn't remember so that it forces Karl to say it to piss Steve off.

i dont know about anyone else but i always get the impression that steve sort of resents karl. steve has spent years trying to get to the place hes at now. then karl comes along, just being himself, and ends up bein 10 times funnier than steve could ever be. when ricky takes the piss its done light heartedly and with humour, when steve does it it has an air of malice about it.

it's just comedy when steve pokes fun at karl. it's very british, like 3 older lads taking the piss out of each other in the pub. but karl doesn't realize that steve isn't actually out to offend and that he means what he says in a purely comedical way - karl believes steve is paying into him, so he bites back, and then steve bites back because he thinks karl has gone too far, which he always does.

shrimpanzee001 you may be right. its just an impresion i get from it personally. for instance me and my mates take the piss out of each other mercilessly, i am british too by the way, but i can always tell if someone has taken offence at me for instance. i just get the same air from steve when hes doing it with karl, there seems to be just a bit of needle in steves comments from time to time thats all.

I feel it's more like, Ricky is good mates with Karl, but Steve can kinda take or leave him outside of the show. Friendly coworkers, but not a lot more than that. Ricky is eternally FASCINATED with Karl. so the difference is quite large and makes it seem worse than it is. Karl and Steve do seem to mean it just a little bit more than Ricky though. On the whole, I can only assume Steve knows better than to resent someone like Karl. Steve is funny because he wants to be, Karl basically just gets laughed at for being a thick fool. (aside from a brainless group of people that stand up for what they call, his 'genius', everyone else is amused, direct- or indirectly, by his lack of knowledge and dumb things he says or does because of it) What bothers me about the two is that Karl always relies on the old "You know I'm not 'avin' a go", while he sometimes clearly brings things up for the sole purpose of insulting/getting back at Steve. He is really a "know me, know me ways" guy and refuses to understand that people can be hurt even when it isn't your intention. I'm not saying he should have stopped, or went too far anywhere, all three are obviously dishing it out, but Karl just seems to lack the intelligence to realize that just saying "I'm not trying to insult you" isnt an excuse to say anything that comes into one's head. Just look at the countless times he's insulted his girlfriend or mentioned his aunt, while they made it clear they didn't appreciate that. That has nothing to do with banter between friends on a tin-pot radio station.
