Another good free modification I found is getting a sharp knife and paring down the corners of the rubber block. Only a slight cut that runs down to half the block's length. It makes it more 'conical' which makes it easier to compress initially and makes the transition from spring to rubber block much more progressive and also makes it slightly easier to press 100%.

Years ago I bought second hand G25. Modded the brake pedal with two springs and a Redbull can. The two springs are of different width, height and thickness. Slipped the thin long one into the thicker wider one and sliced a piece of the can so that it covered the travel of both springs. Slipped it in between the two springs to ensure that the springs didn't interlink. Some WD40 and have never had problems since. Some lubrication spray is needed over time. This has lasted me 100's of hours of racing.

I personally found the most realistic feel was to take the rubber out and put a bit of washing up sponge in there. Now it feels just like my van.
@gappie4 жыл бұрын
Great tip mate. I just used some sponge to fill up the empty space in the spring, so I now have the original rubber + a piece of sponge in the brake spring. I think it's better to do this, because the initial 75% gets stiffer as well, so it flows nicely into the last 25% with the piece of rubber. Also, you can decide how long the piece of sponge is and therefore how much resistance you want to add. Happy with it!
@AKILASANKA4 жыл бұрын
The issue with rubber is when you are pushing hard to gain that extra 0.5 second you got to tailbreak alot. But when you have the rubber you got to focus alot on the breaks as you got to keep tye paddle hard. So i took off the rubber. And switch the clutch spring to the breaks it may sounds silly but worked for me since it helps me alot to soften up the breaks.

I play GT7 with a G29. In GT7 it is a little bit more difficult, because you cant adjust the travel/response of the brake pedal as you can on PC. Still, it gave me the idea to go out and start trying modifying the pedal on my own. With some sponge inside the spring and some cork and a lot of trials, I can say that you can go not tenths but seconds faster around a track, but the big difference, is of course, consistency. Thanks Karl!!!

Note that this mod will make your brake pedal more firm but the sensor is still the original potentiometer which means that reduced movement also reduces the sensor accuracy. Basically try to keep the cork as thin as possible because the thicker the cork is, the less accurate the sensor will be. It's really a balancing act between firm pedal and sensor accuracy. That said, it's hard to beat the costs of this mod! I think the stiffness of the cork is not important here so you could just use stack of coins instead.

The only problem I see with this mod is that, you placing a lot of stress on the plastic and over time it WILL crack and break. Another easy option is to place some rubber washers or a soft piece of foam or sponge inside the spring on top of the square rubber piece. I went with the sponge option, used an old piece of kitchen sponge, about a inch or 2.5cm tall ( cut round of course but slightly smaller than spring diameter). The brake feels a little stiffer and much easier to modulate, for trail braking and such. Stack two if you want it stiffer! Cheers
@KarlGosling4 жыл бұрын
Have you had one crack? Yeah that's a nice simple mod too! :)

It won't crack, because cork has a poisson's ratio of zero. It's one of the few materials that does not expand when compressed.

Hilarious mod :D One additional thing to the calibration: Some arcade or simcade games (I know it's a sim channel but maybe there are viewers who play arcade games too) doesn't have a brake saturation slider, but registers the maximum value for the axis when you setup the input binding (one game I can remember now is the original Test Drive Unlimited, when you apply the pressure at the brakes it will register maximum brake of how far you put the pedals, just like the calibration in windows - without a slider). I never had a console but maybe this can be an option too.

Great vid. I found that having the bit of cork in there actually reduced the travel too much and just went with a coin. My question is: is the coin likely to damage the plastic that the coin is now pressing against? Not the white bit of plastic you took out, but the black bit inside the spring sleeve. EDIT: For anyone else who's worried about this - I've now moved the coin to the other end of the spring, and it's now inside the red sleeve rather than the black one. The bit of plastic the coin rests against looks a bit stronger than the one in the black sleeve.

@Shippoisalegend I'm late to the party on F1 2020 (PS 4). I bought it when is was on special offer when the 21 game came out. I have them both, but as I'm the defending F1 champion with my own team, I'm having too much fun to switch just yet 😀🏁. I'm using a Playseat Challenge, along with all that INDIGO LIME have to offer to stabilise it, placed upon two gaming mats and four non slip rubber mats (all from POUNDLAND but not for a pound (£17 🤔)). Paul The Sim Racer does an excellent video of how to attach all of that to your chair if you have one, check him out. Anyway, chair now very solid and not skating across my wooden floor. Even with the pedal tray mod, you can still get "brake chair lift" under heavy pressure as Karl mentioned. You really have to know your strength or adjust the saturation/deadzone levels accordingly. That being said, I've only just switched to manual gears and non anti-lock brakes. Already seen more control, only problem is the locking under braking. Just traction control left to learn to live without. I did try the clutch as a brake for a while and eventually switched back. Sounds like a good idea putting the clutch spring into the accelerator, or alternatively put a smaller spring inside of the accelerator spring to double up. If you drive a road car, there isn't that much resistance from the accelerator anyway 🤷🏾♂️. Fuck me, I typed all of that before what I actually wanted to say which was that I'll be doing that mod tonight 🙈. I've also got some Teflon tape coming from Amazon (that brown stuff wrapped on the TRUBRAKE cylinderto prevent friction). Also a shot of WD40 should keep it all smooth and moistly lubed under load. Try all that, I'll report back here to let you know how it all goes. Great videos @Karl Gosling. Keep them coming 👍🏿.

These modes are really great except they make the pedals unusable on most console games. This is because the console measures the POT overall resistance, from 0 to 10K then removes 5% from the total. After that it expects the resulting resistance to be usable. If you can't push the pedal to max then you are losing brake power. Some games will allow you to calibrate, but others do not.

Karl. Your videos seem grounded and real with plenty of detailed explanation of your findings. Keep it up, I subbed straight away. Lots of us like to race without buying 2k of race rig! Can you help me? I need to by a BBJ or GTEYE mod to make my g29 more progressive. I use a play seat foldaway and although not taken apart pedals. I imagine it’s got the later stiffer spring as it’s feels ok until hitting the rubber. As I play ACC on PS4 pro my calibration options are limited. So it don’t want to limit the travel much as it will cause issues, just make it more progressive. BBJ or GTeye???
@KarlGosling4 жыл бұрын
If it's too hard and you're on console then removing the rubber is your only option to soften that last 25% of travel as you can't easily recalibrate (I guess not all games will let you). As for springs I like the GTEye springs, the full set of three work and feel really nice.
@TomTheSurgen14 жыл бұрын
@@KarlGosling ok, I have the BBJ coming. was going to swap out rubber for the softer BBJ foam in the hope of more progressive feel at the limit v the rubber step syndrome. I had held back on getting the GTeye until posting here. If the GTEye brake spring allows similar level of travel to stock but more progression then I might buy that today. With the stock rubber in I have the gamma on Acc at 1.75 to get half decent feel. With Gamma at 1.00 it feels impossible to get to %100 braking force.
@TomTheSurgen14 жыл бұрын
To be clear it’s not to hard, I have some legs on me! it’s just not progressive enough and the rubber feels more like a stopper than a simulation of brakes at 80-100%

Nice idea, one problem is in reducing the travel, you are also reducing the sensitivity (resolution) of the potentiometer as the potentiometer is set to measure the travel with the original spring and rubber. Is there still enough resolution/ travel to modulate your braking effectively? Especially with the Logitech brake curve you could find a lack of finesse under hard braking.

Karl this mod is great! Saved me money for now and improved my performance. Long term would I get any further gains from the true brake in your opinion?

IMO, probably not mate.

Interesting concept. I am not clear on whether you're still using the hard rubber block. Essentially you're just preloading the spring, so any type of spacer should work yes? BTW, I believe I've solved the problem with the playseat challenge tipping back on hard braking..... I'll shoot you a link once I have everything sorted. Cheers!

I am still using the rubber yes mate and you could use any type of spacer but cork has a good bit of "squish" to it so not too hard. Yeah link it over when you're done mate! :)
