Should you take your motorcycle on a train in India? I did, and it was a nightmare! Your bike will likely be damaged like mine was. Still, it’s a cost-effective way to beat the summer heat when returning from a ride in the Himalayas. So, in this video, I'll show you exactly how to put your bike on an Indian train and hopefully safely get it to its destination.
I took my motorbike from Jammu to Delhi, an 8.5 hour 577km train journey, at a cost of ₹3395, including shipping and porter to the petrol station in Delhi.
Total costs:
Bike packing: ₹700
Luggage: ₹2095
Porter: ₹600
Train JAT-NDLS 2AC: ₹2641
Plus, whatever I paid ‪@royalenfield‬ to replace the brake lever and clean the bike.
Shipping a motorcycle by train in India involves a detailed process to ensure its safe transit. First, gather all necessary documents, such as the bike's registration certificate, insurance papers, and a government-issued ID. Properly pack your motorcycle to protect it from damage and visit the parcel office at your nearest railway station for booking. Complete the required forms, pay the transportation charges based on the bike's weight and travel distance, and keep the receipt. Hand over your motorcycle at the designated loading area, ensuring it is labelled with your contact information and destination address.
During transit, you can track the train carrying your bike via the Indian Railways website or by contacting the parcel office. Upon arrival at the destination station, present your receipt and necessary documents to the parcel office so they can collect your motorcycle. Inspect it for any damage before leaving the station premises and report any issues immediately to the railway authorities. To ensure a smooth experience, arrive early for drop-off and pick-up and stay updated on train schedules.

The only thing I would add is only parcel your bike from the originating station to the terminating station, because most stops in between are for only 5-10 minutes which is too short to pull a bike from the bottom of the parcel carriage.

I shipped my himalayan once and it was a horrific experience. I packed and submitted my bike and delivery office person said my bike will be shipped in the next train and asked me to not worry. So, i left the station and reached my destination by bus. For next 4 days, my bike was stranded on the railway station where I left it because none of the train had space for a slightly bigger bike like himalayan. For 4 days, I was daily visiting the destination railway station to enquire if it has arrived or not. Worst part is they won't inform you until you go and ask. Finally, i got my bike. The front wheel was punctured, had to push it to tyre repair shop. Then had to push it to fuel station because they ask you to empty the fuel before shipping. Worst experience of my life😢

Yes, something similar happened to me. My Himalayan was meant to be with me on the train, but they put it on a slightly later train, without telling me. Luckily my friend Arun was there to question the luggage guys and find out what train my bike was going on. My bike was damaged too - many scratches and bent brake lever. Same issue with petrol, I found a porter but he dropped my bike! Very bad experience overall.

My elder brother sent his Dominar 400 via Railway. He sent it as parcel instead of luggage like you. For reference if you don't know, in luggage you need a valid train ticket and your bike is usually sent along with you if there is space of course. In parcel, you just drop your bike to the parcel office and they send it whenever they want. Also, you don't need a ticket in this case. Pros of the luggage system is that usually the bike travels with you and you can see it's loading and unloading. Downside is that they often try to shove your bike in the carriage where there is not enough space. That's why usually bikes receive a lot of damages. In case of parcel they try load it in a carriage where there is enough space. You don't get to see your bike loading but after loading you will get a message telling you train on which it's loaded, so you can reach there before the train arrives. My brother's bike was barely wrapped because there was no wrapping left in Bangalore station. But still it came without even a single scratch. My brother used two portars instead of one becase in the destination NJP station you have push you bike to the overbridge and path narrow and steep. They did their job well anyways.

I had to send my brother-in-law's scooty to Mumbai from Nizamuddin as parcel. They invented their own rule that parcel also needs a valid AC ticket for long distance train (above 500 or 700 km). My brother-in-law called his uncle who is an official in Central Railway and after lots of calling from his side, they finally agreed on a general ticket. Crazy people

Oh man Karl....I had an 1800 Kawasaki Vulcan......it was a beast (I'm female) It weighs about 750 lbs. One day I was riding and the sun was in my eyes. I noticed a stop sign ahead so I started to slow down to put on the brakes. I slid on a patch of oil and laid it down. I had so much adrenaline pumping, I was able to pick the bike up. A couple of guys raced over and stopped, mouths wide open in disbelief. They asked if I was okay, and buy the grace of God, not a scratch was on me. There is NO WAY I would have taken an adventure like yours! The most I would do is Sturgis....and that's bad enough! Kudos to you for getting home safely!

I transported my Honda CB 350 from Delhi to Bangalore back in Feb 2021, with the help of Gati’s truck transportation service. Figured out that the best way to get it done is to get the bike wrapped with foam and padding very heavily by the guys at the transportation center, as well as drop your bike off at the main city hub and pick it up at the other city’s main hub, this way the bike only gets loaded and unloaded once from the truck. The experience was still very worrysome but the bike was mostly unscathed. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience Karl! Im also kinda scared of transporting my bike through the railways :P
@KarlRock

Thanks for letting me know. That service might be better... Especially if they're specialise in transporting bikes and know how to secure them. The railway just dumps them in a carriage to move around during the trip.
@Mrhave2doit

Most people who avail the service from Gati recommend being around for the loading of the bike onto the trucks, so as to make sure that you can inspect it, to confirm its not moving around, has ample security ties holding the bike in place, and that additional things are not kept on top of the bike. The transportation costed 7k from DEL to BLR and took 2 days, I had to pay an additional 1k to the packing guys to make sure they pack and secure the bike well. Hope this helps! 😄

I had parcelled my bike to Kerala from Vadodara last year, though bike received at kerala nearly had no damage (only front number plate got bent & it's cover was broked) but Booking the bike in Vadodara was a pain. The person providing the covering service was at ground floor and the parcel office at 1st floor. First you have to empty the petrol tank and take the bike at 1st floor (empty tank) then once the officer sees that no petrol is there then you will have to take the bike again at ground floor and pack it. Then after packing again you have to take the bike at 1st floor and weigh the bike in front of the officer and then take it to the station. Felt bad that all arrangements could had made at 1st floor it's hard to climb the bike twice at 1st floor due to their wrong arrangements !

And then move to your seat.

Thanks for sharing, I had no idea bikes could get this damaged. I guess a better option would be to just make the trip by bike, book a hotel on the way and take a nights rest in between to beat the heat. It's probably equal to going out in the heat to get the bike packed, going to all those photocopy shops, walking to the petrol bunk and more. Plus it might even work out to being cheaper considering the cost of bike repairs as well.

I was once moving from Gurgaon to Bangalore. I didn't have a bike, but a cycle. I just asked about the process of transporting it by train and decided to gift my cycle to a friend in Gurgaon. A cycle was not worth so much of hassle. This whole process is so needlessly bureaucratic and inefficient. Like how difficult is it for the railways to keep a few portable ramps around to easily load and unload the bikes?

33:46 well i work at a petrol station myself and it's also BPCL, I don't think it's possible to fill without resetting to zero, because as soon as you put the nozzle back it resets to zero, that's how the system is designed. The only work around is to fill straight out after filling someone else, but the chances are almost zero, as most people will ask for a fixed amount like 100, 200, 500, etc. So the delivery person has to put the nozzle back, I don't think you are scammed. If you come down South to Kerala I can show you around how things work in a fuelling station. The systems are designed to avoid scamming, so again it's very rare. Cheers!

Since I knew the parcel agent at my home town, he charged me some *side fee* and the bike was loaded with me in the same train. In the return I transported my bike from Chandigarh to Bhopal , since I didn't knew anyone in Chandigarh the bike was delayed for almost a month . I got my bike back almost 36 days later from the date of booking that too after endless argument at the parcel office. At the end I got to know the bike had reached bhopal within 2 weeks after booking and they had somehow not registered the parcel after receiving it and thought that chandigarh railway had still not sent the bike . For a moment I had thought that my bike had been stolen. It was a nightmare bringing it back. So I had both good and bad experience with the Indian railways.😅

And here comes the scam, they took a separate amount for the bike wrap around 700 rupees and when i received the bike at delhi, there were some people who will help u in taking the bike out of the station to the nearest petrol pump, but in the middle he will say that if you pay him more, he will take the bike to petrol pump, but when i first asked him, he guarantee me for 300 for the petrol pump. At the end i had to pay him around 600 just to take the bike to the nearest petrol pump. Some suggestions: (1) the Railways should have plastic vacuum pumps to siphon off the gasoline into a bottle; there must be incoming and outgoing passengers at every station. Good opportunity for a small trader to resell the filled gasoline bottles; railways should have wooden or steel drop down platforms from the coaches to help roll in and roll out the bikes; carry a pocket knife to unwrap the package; remove the battery for peace of mind; overall the working class is honest. Of course there are crooks everywhere. India is no exception.

Hey Karl you could have keep a rubber pipe and small plastic bottle with you in your hand bag. After reaching Delhi you can ask anyone at the station or parking to give small amount of patrol from their bike. 99% people will oblige you specially if you are a foreigner and a youtuber too.

This current Government will spent their money on big projects but never try to improve the things which already exist. Upon that railway staff is under lots of pressure because of vacant posts since government doesn't even fill up the vacant post in railway.

To anyone reading comments: "Photocopy/photostat is a big business in Jammu or in general near railway stations/Govt offices in India. So it is always better to take photocopies beforehand of all the possible documents. Otherwise, you end up paying even 100 times more than the normal price." For example, 1rs per copy to 100rs per copy.

I had my royal Enfield bullet shipped by train from Pune to Jaipur. They did pretty much the same but with sacks filled with hay then tied around the bike. I didn't know at the time they would fill a whole container full of motorbikes, like if they were boxes stacked ontop of each other then rolled out the door at the end. 😢

I think the young lad who pushed the bike and took Karl around to get photocopies etc deserved a tip. He worked hard in that heat for a couple of quid. At leat if you only wanted to tip him £1 it may have made his day.

Of course there is Goa and Paravati Valley... beside of those famous stuff... are there psytrance/goa/hightech discos in bigger towns in India :-D ? maybe it's a stupid question... however would be nice to know. jai hind and stay healthy at all 😌🧡🤍💚

New Delhi Railway station is Scam Central Karl. If you were arriving at a station in any smaller city, things would be a lot more pleasant. If you can, you should shift out of Delhi. Chandigarh would be a great option.

I sent my bike through indian railways and they bent my entire handle and broke the indicator. It cost me 2 thousand just to get it fixed. It's terrible how they handle bikes, especially costly ones. And the insurance is practically useless because they'll never pay and you'll keep running around.

Crazy how simple everything is. They don't even have a ramp on the train for the bikes. The bikes are not secured on the train with some straps. The guy at the wrapping sucks the fuel up with his mouth into plastic bottles. They do this every day, why not make life easier? Or do they have some kind of "hard work is honest work" mentality?

I have to ride my bike every day here in Texas Ive just stopped wearing a helm and protective armor. I wore it at the start back in 2012 when I was learning. But I would puke from the heat. Its gone up to 110+ American temp not Celsius. so I risk it cause I don't own a car (cost way to much vs bikes)

Motorcycle, Hint on how to stay cool in those high temperatures. Wear a long sleeve cotton shirt, something that absorbs a lot of water. Get the shirt all wet, hop on the Motorcycle and enjoy your cool ride in 45C weather. When the Evaporative Air Conditioner stops working, stop and wet your shirt down again. Enjoy the Cool Ride thru the countryside.
