I don’t think the frontier kids should’ve been able to literally communicate with their spirit digimon forms as I don’t view the hybrid digimon as separate entities but it would’ve been awesome if the spirits served as a medium for the kids to communicate with each of their respective 10 ancient warriors and have THEM be the mentors. I think it’s criminal that we dont even get to see the original 10 ancient warriors aside form silhouettes and a brief appearance in a mid movie.

I still wish Frontier had partner digimon. The kids getting to fight next to their Digimon would have been so cool. And then they could have done a fusion evo in their spirit form with the partners... Would have been epic. Frontier gets a lot of hate but it was actually really good.

I think the mentality around it was introducing Gatomon at a higher level so they didn't have to have episodes of her going to champion and could jump right to ultimate. But they could have easily just had like, Gatomon > Darcmon > Angewomonn so that Gatomon could be a rookie. Or Gatomon > Angewomon > New Ultimate

Personal hot takes: - The franchise's new approach that Digimon have always existed and interacted with humanity way before the Internet kind of kills the point of them being Digital Monsters. I hate it, and I think Tamers' explanation to the origin of the Digiworld and the Digimon is the best in the franchise. - There are some fanfictions that I've read that are WAY better than official products. - The whole X-Antibody thing is just okay. Don't personally care much to it.

To add to the firs tone, the "time passes differently" situation means the Digital World can already have a centuries-long history without being older than computers. So the only thing even accomplished by taking the "digital" out of "digital monster" is to insert Digimon into human history...which has never really been done in a particularly interesting way.

The Impmon/Beelzemon arc is amazing, and Gallantmon is kinda cool, but other than that the season sucked. Biomerge and using cards were stupid, the final boss was a giant blob, but people praise it for exploring “darker subject matter” as if the anime hadn’t done that since season 1

Not really a hot take but two things I hope we see more of: how digivalution is basically a representation of the bond between protagonist and digimon, I want to see more seasons exploring what this channel has done in what if videos and see how a different partner completely alters a digimon's evolution line. Karn has been super good exploring it on this channel but I want to see it in an official anime somehow. The other is what the best seasons did which is letting the characters unlock their next digital level by completing a step in their character arc. I remember the original series did that pretty well then undermined it by only letting only mat and tie go mega so it felt like no one else's story arc was complete

As a dub kid the Hightonview Terrace arc was insane! I still to this day go back and watch it with my son and I'm 35 😅 I still remember losing my mind when Fox Kids ran a full weekend marathon of the Hightonview Terrace arc and the Dark Masters arc and my mind being absolutely blown when we first got WarGrey and my boy MetalGaruru. Here’s another take: digimon still doesnt have enough story based media. To continue the eternal pokemon analogy: when an aspect of the pokemon games isn’t adapted in the anime its not a huge loss because you still get to see it realised in the game. When certain digimon/ lore from the vpets and card game aren’t adapted in an anime it poses more of a problem because vpets and the card game aren’t fully fledged story telling mediums. You can’t communicate information in the same way you could through a video game or tv show. This leads to some really interesting digimon and bits of lore to sadly be relegated to mere pages on a website.

7:30 - I have said the exact same thing with the frontier spirits! I think this would’ve circumvented the reason why a lot of people didn’t like it, namely, that it took away the partner dynamic. And they kind of did this anyway at the very very end of the series. They could’ve had the frontier spirits kind of be like the way that Ichigo interacts with his Zanpakuto in Bleach. The kids could have still turned into the Digimon, but at the same time, you’d have some semblance of the traditional Digimon/Digidestined partner dynamic going on. . I like Frontier as it is. Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t like it at first, but I grew to like it. However, I do think that this would have been way to go about it.

On the whole Level take: I had been thinking for a long time now that they should merge the Japanese and Western names. Because when you look at how the Japanese names are structured and how the series has always had an emphasis on Fighting the names are like, Baby Fighter, Baby Fighter II, Child Fighter, and so on and so forth. The names chosen for the Western side kind of make more sense for the earlier levels rather than the later ones. So something like: Baby, In-Training, Rookie, Champion, Perfect, Ultimate. This way you can keep up the idea of them still being Fighters and make it sound like Tournament Rankings. That's my hot take because some of the level names between them are really weird to use in my opinion. Fresh, Baby II, Child, Adult, Ultimate (In place of Perfect), and Mega (In place of Ultimate) had started to sound weird to me as the years rolled onward. Ultra and Super Ultimate could be ultimately whatever it's just the one they pull out whenever they feel like it.

I always thought Davis was the least interesting person to pair with ken, yolie obviously had strong feelings for him then discovered he was the villain, t.k's trauma from the battles of season one is shown in the episode where it causes him to literally beat ken, kari and ken both have links to the dark ocean and feel more like opposites with kari having been shown as almost the incarnation of good and light in season one while he tried to conquer the digital world, Cody was the only one who struggled with ken joining the team causing friction between them while armadillomon and wormmon were shown to be getting on very well

I guess the closest thing to a hot take I have is that if every Agumon variant, like Snowagumon, and Toyagumon, Bushiagumon, etc. followed the Greymon> Metalgreymon> Wargreymon evolution plan, that would just make them more boring, since there’s already the regular and black variants of Agumon for that, and doing so would just bloat the roster with more Greymon-species Digimon.

Damn, I missed the original prompt. Here are mine: - 100% agree regarding toyagumon and the mega NEEDS to be BlockWargreymon ( a la BlackWargreymon). - Angewomom was not sexualized in OG adventure. Despite being designed before the show, she and Angemon represent the purity of Kari and T.K. as the youngest digidestined. Appropriately they are guardian angels where the older kids are mature enough to bond with genuine monsters. - Frontier is great because it's about a bunch bored kids who think they're tourists, but who then realize they're in a real place with real problems that precede them. To me, Takuya's growth into becoming Aldamon is a perfect encapsulation of this journey. - Digimon Survive is the best Digimon story in a long time and it's better than every digimon game except maybe World 1 and World 3.

The whole sub vs dub argument irritates the hell out of me, 1) different people have different tastes 2) people get into what is accessible to them 3) i bet there is fraction of people who are introduced to anime through subs compared to dub and although I don't deny dub snobbery exists, sub snobbery is definitely more vocal 4) the idea that one does damage to the franchise that the other suffers from is ridiculous, using Yu-Gi-Oh as a great example yes the dub made it more kid friendly by introducing stuff like the shadow realm ( which makes more sense that the original with people dying and coming back to life)however if it wasn't for the popularity that came from that dub Yu-Gi-Oh would not be going now and probably wouldn't have even got to GX certainly as far as 5ds or zexal

7:36 I agree, Digimon Frontier had more wasted potential than 02's abandoned plotlines and almost as much wasted potential as the first Digimon World game where the fact that ReDigitize and Next Order had different Digimon Worlds instead of going back and exploring the deeper mysteries of Digimon World's world is deeply disappointing. Digimon Frontier might get that chance if they come back to it like Adventure and 02 but given what I've seen of Tri and Last Evolution (haven't seen the new 02 movie yet), I am not getting my hopes up. (Also I sincerely hope they do not go back to Tamers, Runaway Locomon is already more than enough, Tamers is done, over, finished!)

Data Squad aka Savers is honestly an underrated season in my opinion. I remember falling out of love with Digimon when we got Frontier, but that was mainly because it didn't feel right to me to not have a partner dynamic between the human and Digimon. Because of this, I wound up enjoying Data Squad a lot more because to me, it felt like Digimon was returning to it's roots, so to speak -- instead of having the kids turn into the Digimon themselves or forcibly tying the digivolution to the card game (which I personally always felt Tamers could've done without) and instead you get a digivolution that's literally fueled by the emotions of the human partner.

Xros Wars is obnoxiously gimmicky/kiddy and has the same writing issues 2020 has but with horny content, Appmon is too kiddy and has the opposite problem of how Frontier treats villains (pathetic jobbers rather than villain sues). The worst Savers has is boring episodes, and with Digimon, its better to have "whatever" episodes than Appmon's farting episode or 2020's early uses of Omegamon.

My hot take is that both Digimon as a brand, and as a fanbase, needs to move on from Adventure. Compared to other seasons or media, Adventure gets an incredible amount of content and focus, with several sequels, more merchandise, tie-ins, promotional content, and marketing, and in turn, significantly more fan content and discussion, to a point of dwarfing all other Digimon media. People may forget, but Tri was a raw titan of marketing in Japan, it was quite literally everywhere, and it was all people in Digimon spaces were really talking about besides Cyber Sleuth, which capitalised on the nostalgia hype of Tri to get its own name out there by way of good timing. Poor Appmon, which came out during the Tri movie releases, was utterly ignored by the fanbase and completely buried by Tri marketing, despite it arguably being a hell of a lot better than Tri ironically. But most fans don't give it the time of day for shallow reasons, and ultimately being married to Adventure content as their own idea of what Digimon should be. Adventure gets multiple sequels, a reboot, and even a tie-in PSP video game recreating its events. No other Digimon property comes close to that. Adventure isn't bad at all, but I'd argue it's been surpassed by better seasons, better video games, better manga, etc, as Digimon has gone one, yet people still cling to it out of nostalgia, and in turn, Toei and Bandai use that to capitalise on very safe and effective marketing, rather than diversifying and taking a chance on their other Digimon media. It's the exact same issue Pokemon has with Gen 1 pandering, but even worse. Whereas the existence of Genwunners in Pokemon is debatable at this point given how many years its been since the first instance of them, the Digimon equivalent is both prevalent, and the active market for a lot of content surrounding the franchise. I personally hope we can just quietly move past Adventure. Not forgetting it, but trying really hard to engage with and create new Digimon media with as much passion, love, appreciation, and promotion behind it as Adventure got. Digimon deserves better than to have some of its gems be ignored and mishandled. If we forever obsess over the past, we will never love the future.

Totally agree that Digimon has so much potential! Always thought the anime was way better than Pokemon's. Can't say the same about the games. I wish Digimon did a series that dealt in more of the actual canon. Every series is so different that it is hard to look into the lore. Were they created by humans or weren't they? Have they always been among us or not? I take my fanfiction and base it more off of Adventure through Last Evolution, but it is hard to make sense when a lot of references may include the other seasons... makes it confusing! Also, I think Tamers was the best season because of it's darker themes and overall arcing storyline.

In regards to the Gatomon/Salamon part. I honestly feel like they should’ve just had Gatomon at the rookie level from the get go. I always hated that Angewomon and Ladydevimon were at a different level then Angemon/Devinmon. That would’ve saved them the trouble of explaining why Gatomon could stay in her Champion form. They really wrote themselves into a corner when creating her evolution line.

Regarding X-antibodies, as much as i like them i dont think we will ever get them in any kind of anime or movie because each form and level of a digimon has an X varient could you imagine a season with only 3 kids have 4 dedicated episodes of them having their digimon evolve from rookie to champion to ultimate to mega and then another 4 episodes for the X varients thats a total of 24 episodes nearly half a season. The most recent season atm Ghost game who's whole gimmick of the season was side evos wasnt ready to dedicate that many eps to evolution only giving Gammamon side evos and no one else despite having only 3 digimon and nearly 70 eps to work with. They even had to sacrifice the 6th ranger trope the series is known for because they didnt want anymore digimon.

My hot take, even though it’s not a hot take and it’s actually just a known fact of every conceivable universe, is the The worm-mon line, specifically the wormmon line ken uses in digimon adventure 02, (leafmon, minomon, stingmon) is the best digimon line, as well as individual digimon (mainly worm and sting themselves) in the entire series and cannot be matched in how perfect and flawless they are. I think the franchise should focus more on the anime and have a season per year. This would be great for them because not only the anime IS the more mainstream part of the franchise and could attract more people to buy the games, but also there are people in the fandom that only watch the anime and don't consume anything else (but, they COULD, with the right marketing IN THE ANIME).

Here are some more: - Guilmon does the "Dino Buddy"-thing way better than either incarnation of Agumon ever did. - Omnimon as a fusion is bad. It doesn't make sense that Agumon and Gabumon can merge just because their partners are really good friends. Compare that to biomerges, which are the culmination of the human-digimon bond, or even Susanoomon (arguably Omnimon 2.0), being earned through the growing bond between Takuya and Koji (and the other kids the second time around) allowing them to channel the collective power of the spirits together. - As for the Digimon level-names, I think the names we know should be the ones the Digimon primarily use among themselves, while institutions like DATS would use more formal names (Rookie becoming Class-3, Mega becoming Class-6 and Digimon like the Sovereigns, Royal Knights or Olympos XII being grouped as Class-6+). Remember, digivolution is like aging to non-partnered Digimon and usually a one-way street. It's meaning primarily changes for partnered Digimon who can digivolve more easily, but not permanently and generally not under their own power. - The societal impact of humans and digimon openly coexisting should be a major theme for any sequel to a Digimon season. I think one reason why the attempted sequels had major issues is because the characters were already insanely powerful, so the villains needed to become more and more absurd. Instead, present them with problems their sheer strength cannot solve. - Probably less of a hot take, but Ryo's storyline really needs a proper resolution.

I think my biggest problem with the dub for Digimon Adventure was that it was never silent, there was always some music blasting out. The Digimon movie sub and dub are like two different genres. The dub is much more comedy based while the sub is more traditional and serious.

The sub has enough comedy, a faithful dub would have been just as if not more popular with the kids and aged better. Saying that Numemon throws mud is removing pee pee poo poo humor. What's the point if you're just going to make pee pee poo poo jokes in the serious scenes ? Kids like to take things seriously sometimes, but not all the time, and digimon tends to strike the right balance when not dubbed.

VERY late to the party, but here's what I see with Digimon Tamers: it's terrible, but not entirely. It has some of the coolest Digimon and awesome characters, but almost all of them are side characters with too little screentime. Meanwhile, the main cast is Tai 3.0, asian Matt, and Miss Unlikeable. Their digipartners have okay designs, but are rehashes of the exact same formula all over again: Big Knight, Big Mech, and Big Tiddies. Don't get me wrong, I think they're cool, but they are excessively uninspired. Tamers also goes all over the place before actually getting into its core, and I think this is why it ends up so popular - there are so many small stories, you're bound to find something to like. But because of that, it's oversaturated as all get out, and almost none of the interesting side characters get a proper conclusion to their respecitve arcs.

It wasn't even like Lost where mysteries were resolved just as often as they were discovered. 3:14 Honestly 4kids got a lot of hate that Saban never did and while there might be more behind the scenes BS when it came to 4kids and more weird changes and botched attempts at censoring and localizing when it came to 4kids, they really weren't all that different. Power Rangers, Chaotic and TMNT were all the best those companies did but that's not really saying much because they weren't anime dubs (not that Power Rangers didn't dub the suit footage but later seasons started using more original footage as the franchise started to develop its own identity independent of the source material, something anime localizations have rarely done, let alone done well). Hell, almost every version of Shredder _died_ in the 4kids TMNT. *_DIED!_* (and yes, Cyber Shredder died, shut up). Of course when Saban came back, they were uniquically worse than old Saban _and_ 4kids. 4kids would have _never_ botched "SlashAngemon" (or GaurdiAngemon because they would have actually consulted Bandai about it. Even old Saban somehow completely failed to localize Kyatto _Ninden_ Tyende when they didn't have the script and gave us _Samurai_ Pizza Cats instead so it's not exactly 100% new for Saban but it is worse) that hard.

Karn, my good man, Rumble Arena has the tamers in it, what are you talking about /lh Interestingly, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is kind of popular for the exact same reasons Digimon is. Like, in PMD, you have a partner who can fully speak to you and is for all intents and purposes your equal. Of course you both have similar physical capabilities in that game, but still. That sort of close friendship and partnership is what draws a lot of people into both franchises. I'm all for more stories about Digimon, but I agree with you that they wouldn't sell as well. The thing about sub vs dub to me is that I think there are at least 50% of dub changes that genuinely improved the series for American kids, but there is a small percentage of changes that corrupt the original intent. A lot of people have done in-depth analysis of the changes between each season, and 02 was just a very subtle series that did NOT translate well to the hyper-comedic style of Adventure. What's funny to me though is that I like 02, as a dub watcher, BECAUSE its funny. I remember getting kind of bored when I tried to watch some of 02 subbed - and I say that when the 02 characters are some of my absolute favorites. Granted I don't remember the sub that well since I was watching it during a very personally challenging time in my life and I barely remember anything from that period BUT I don't think the solution is to remove the humor from 02. I got a lot of the underlying messaging from 02, like I see people hating on Davis and I'm like "but didn't he grow and change as a person (definitely not because he was gay for ken)?" so I know that the 02 dub has irreparably damaged Davis's character (I did find him a lot sweeter in the sub from what I recall) but like...idk, is that really "better"? Better for Daisuke fans, sure - Davis is probably my least favorite main character in 02 but I still liked him because 02 meant so much to me and I saw his character growth. He wasn't my favorite gogglehead by any means but I still saw his appeal as a character. And who knows if those people would have still hated him if they watched the sub? A lot of reasons people hate Davis are plot moments baked into the show - his abrasiveness and fixation on Kari didn't help that at all, but still. Heck, reasons I point to and think Davis was selfish I'm pretty sure were still in the original sub. So, I dunno. Even though I'm also a "Tamers is just okay" guy (I actually think Tamers is a really good anime, it just doesn't grip me like the other seasons I consider that good - also, I'm biased because I usually prefer media made for kids over stuff made for adults) I think the dub of Tamers did a really good job balancing inserted jokes and accurate dialogue. You could probably get even sillier with it if you wanted to than Tamers, considering Adventure is like at least 90% fine, but I digress. Idk, I don't watch Digimon just for the drama, I watch it because it has cute monsters and funny jokes and characters I grow to love. There's a reason Appmon is my favorite season - it's very silly, which highlight its darker moments so well.

The hot takes that always get me are the ones where you can tell they didn’t really watch or play the game/season they’re dunking on. Specifically when their take is (for example) “Nothing is as deep/dark as Adventure-Tamers and everything else is for little kids,” (which to each their own I guess) but then you look and the game they said was for little kids and wasn’t as dark as adventure was Survive.
