Karoo 4 4000 Mile Review

Here's my thoughts on the Metzeler Karoo 4's after 4000 miles of riding through pretty much every terrain available in the UK.

I have 4000 miles on my Triumph 400x in just over 3 1/2 months on metzeler karoo 3 tires and not much sign of wear. I am riding 110 miles per day commuting here in New Mexico with 20 of that on gravel/hard pack, which they are not very good on. A lot of drifting, both front and rear, so hoping the karoo 4 solves that issue. The 3's are good on tarmac but poor on the rockier off road for sure. Being a lighter bike at about 390 lbs, the wear is less than the mid weights, but I do quite hard on/off road. So thinking about what's next. Motoz tractionator adv or Dunlop trail max or even shinko 804/805's. Any suggestions?

Take a look at Mitas E-07's. Good on road, good off road, but not in deep Welsh mud (clay) Grumps

Looking at putting some of these bad boys to do the ATC and parts of the TET in the Pyrenees in May. You think they will be man enough?

They’ll be plenty good enough. I used them on the ACT U.K. and riding the Great Western Trail.

what about your air pressure / speed off-road/on-road you are riding? I always have got problems with my tires on GSA 1250, I'm riding maybe too fast ( like 120-140 km/h on road / up to 100-110 km/h off road) and the last Mitas E07+ survived 4.5k miles (6k km) ...

I run road pressures all the time. Road speeds are about the same as yours on twisty roads. Trail speeds are lower as most of the trails in my area are pretty technical on a GS.

thanks for your insight, just put on the Dunlop Trailmax Missions, scary at the first roundabout with a reluctance to turn in but easing off now their getting scrubed in .

For sure, off road tyres are a bit weird at first. Glad you’re getting used to them.

They've done fairly well I'd say if you've got 4k+ out of them. I only get around 2.5k out of a set of MT43s on my ol' girl.

Those NT43’s must be super soft. I guess the lack of Mike’s you get is the trade off for the increased grip.

Thank's for watching. They're quieter than the Karoo 3's, but off road tyres are noisier than road tyres. I always wear ear plugs so hardly notice it.

What are they like in mud compared to other similar tyres you have used? Thanks.

They can get a bit overwhelmed in deep mud, but if you can keep the bike moving forwards it helps to clear the tread blocks. It’s the same with the Anakee Wilds that I’ve got fitted at the moment.
