Shame Karpov and Fischer never met, would've been a fascinating match up.

It makes no sense at all that other chess youtubers get much more attention while their videos aren't half as instructive as yours.

Sam, thank you for your fine video analysis of this mighty clash of GM titans, which is very helpful. When I looked online for the pgn of this game, I saw this was the round 9 match (the Karpov win), but they played this same opening, with the same colours, in round 1 and Spassky (Black) won that game. It would have been interesting to have a compare & contrast these 2 games to highlight what Karpov learnt from his first round loss to allow him to win this round 9 game. Anyway, I can do that by myself & it could be interesting? Meanwhile, thanks again for your fine chess analyses and best wishes to you!

Karpov just kinda crept up on people unlike the rise of Kasparov. By the time he was 18 I read he had played more tournament games than Capablanca had in his career. His games always seem to be absent of mistakes of the positional kind. His games always seemed to put unbearable pressure on his opponents. Korchnoi was always trouble for him due to Victors ability to counter attack. Kasparov failed to learn from Victor how to fight Karpov and it cost him much. Thanks for the much needed videos.

Karpov easily has the best career in the history of chess. He beats GM at age 70. He was a wonder kid in soviet union and beat all the other soviet super grand masters and then all of them were jealous of him and laugh at his light voice (spassky, Korchnoi). If he emphasized in openings against Kasparov he would own him too because he was superior to middlegame and endgame.

1:20 how is g4 a good move? It just created a hole on f4 right?? And at 12:50 black could just take the knight with his pawn, that would also open up the g file for him

The pawn can't take the knight because it exposes check on the king from the queen. It's against the basic rule of king can't expose himself to check. G4 is a good move because it begins an attack on the king's side which is typical in a Sicilian. Early g4, f4 and h4 are very typical in this opening. White launches a king's side attack and black plays more on the queen's side and center. Also the white king isn't castled there yet, so he can also castle long on the queen's side. Chess ideas and advice of "don't do this or that" isn't rigid, they're guidelines. But conditional depending on the position, opening and who is playing. That's why beginners need to study openings and see what the common responses are and positions they create. All openings have overall common themes and ideas regardless who's playing em.
