Excellent analysis all round. So frustrating with this groundhog day rebuilding fail year after year. Last year Yzerman brought in tough guy Klim Kostin who took a roster spot from Berggren and this year it's tough guy Watson who takes a roster spot from Kasper. Last year one too many goalies so what do we do this year, add even more goalies. They don't make it easy to be a fan.
@jamesbond15863 ай бұрын
All the slappies talking about how Danielson is ready. Hes not ready at all. He needs to spend the entire year in the AHL. He probably needs the start the season in the AHL next year as well. Nothing wrong with that. He could be ready to contribute when he turns 21. Kasper, MBN and Mazur will be ready this year and will definitely be on the team next year out of camp. Copp, Motte and Watson need to go. Next years team will be when the rebuild ends and you start to see the fruits of what Yzermann has been building these past few years.
@tedmarling63 ай бұрын
The question is how many youngsters is Yzerman willing to bring up in the same year? Danielson had an impressive camp and should see the NHL roster next year as well. As the boys pointed out, Lombardi could be in the mix also. #LGRW
@jamesbond15863 ай бұрын
@tedmarling6 I don't blame Yzerman for not wanting to call up players who aren't ready. I think Kasper was clearly ready, but Wings let him return to the AHL. He would definitely help them get off to a quick start. Next year, we should see a couple of prospects make the team out of preseason. MBN will make the team. ASP could make the team, but it all depends on how much weight he is going to put on in the off-season. Same with Mazur. They are the two closest behind MBN. Lombardi needs to put on weight. He definitely won't make it out of camp over the other players listed. He will be in AHL for the full season this year. He will be sent down to the AHL next year after the preseason. He has to put on weight. He's going to be good but just needs to gain more weight.
@daltonking69563 ай бұрын
I also think the type of rookies you're talking about matters. The thing about Danielson, Kasper, MBN, and I'll throw Mazur in there with less confidence but the thing they've been praised is they play a mature game when they were drafted, and their bodies need to develop more than their minds. Never forget the 2 kids and goat line, we could roll a couple of those in a year and I don't think that would be a bad thing.
@pjdaddio3 ай бұрын
We have seen Yzerman for years assemble rosters. The common trend is that he exudes extreme patience inasmuch as he waits for the players to force his hand (i.e. play well and force me to have to make a tough decision whether that be a trade, a contract, a roster spot, etc.). Further, he sets up his rosters so he has options at nearly all positions. For example, he has 7 top six forwards on the current roster with 2 more in GR, simply an injury and a call-up away. He went into last season wanting 7 NHL defenseman on his roster and ended up with 7.5. The opening night roster is merely a starting point. When players or injuries force Yzerman's hand, he will play the cards he has in both the Detroit and Grand Rapids hands, so to speak. As for the fans, Yzerman's patience is the bane of our existence LOL.

If we're gonna keep Waston, why did we bother to move Costin? Costin at least had 'some' offensive upside.
@JackoTV3 ай бұрын
Kostin* , other then that it's spelled cap. Yzerman said after the trade that they couldnt have a guy earning 2 mil sitting in the presser or just play 6-8min a night, that was the reasoning behind the move, which Kostin also requested... Watson was signed on leauge minimum on a two way contract = what you want a 13th forward to be at who can fill in a few games here and there on a 4th line...

Do we think there is a possibility of a McGroarty or Gauthier situation in Detroit? If I’m one of these kids I’m thinking I don’t want to wait 4 years+ to break into the nhl on a rebuilding team. It’s a joke
@Septembersmith96333 ай бұрын
This year will be a good measuring stick for Danielson considering most of his draft class is entering their first years in the AHL. As for the rest of the Red Wings idk, I guess I'm just not as panicked as the rest of the fan base. There's too many unanswered variables to be too upset about where we are. I would love to be a powerhouse team but there's no reason to rush and point fingers this year. If Husso and Larkin can stay healthy that's a good first step for team morale. I honestly think it all comes down to trade deadline time again if you're not talking playoffs at that point you move Kane/Taresenko; or whoever and then play your top rookies. Hell id be bold enough to say you could still have a long shot for the wildcard even with rookies moved up.

At the risk of sounding like I'm nitpicking Dangle...how in the world is the Leafs' regular season success "unprecedented" with zero president's trophies and one division title as a result of the rather anemic Canada division during covid lockdowns? Even then, I've no doubt Leaf fans would've preferred the fate of Montreal that season as they stomped Toronto and went all the way to the finals. Yeah the Leafs have reliably made the playoffs for several years, but until they've managed to stack a few division titles and/or a couple president's trophies, I fail to see how their regular seasons have been all that impressive...save compared to their horrendous playoff record.

Kane is a good player though and will produce in a top 6 role. The problem is Copp makes 5.6M a year for a role Kasper could fill and probably chip in more offensively, the guy also has multiple years left on that deal. Also, there are roster spots taken up by guys that are borderline AHL players. Not bringing in one of the most talented d men in the organization last year arguably cost them a playoff spot, now they’re repeating the same mistake with a forward that played well enough to look like one of the best 9 forwards on the team.

Agree fully on the diffent ways youguys asses the Kasper situation. Really great analysis from different angles. I do hope that Ryan's take is whats going to play out. Let me add another simpler assessment of yhis situation: you leave the arguably best player in the preseason out of the roster, then you better win and be on a pace that clearly takes you to playoffs. If not, then you owe the player and the fans an apology and you should be seriously questioned if you are the roster responsible the team needs.
