Women are more educated, more independent, able to work, etc. However, these women find the pool of men/partners at their level or above to be dwindling, particularly past a certain age. It is much harder now for an educated and successful woman to also find a lasting relationship once they reach a certain age. We may not throw around the term 'spinster' so freely these days but women of a certain age who are single, never married, no children, are certainly judged as spinsters in almost the exact way they were hundreds of years ago. Parents express their disappointment , family members ask when they are to buy a suit for a wedding...and should such a woman dare to hold someone else's baby, they are subject to questions about why they don't have one of their own yet. They are seen to have failed at their purpose in life. Obviously there are exceptions. Not everyone in society feels that way. But it's a widespread enough opinion to still be felt by those who haven't followed the path that was expected of them.
