Kate Humble and travels to the rugged areas of Nepal where the nomadic Raute people live, roaming the altitudes of the mountains. Not immediately welcomed into the tribe, Kate proves helpful in moving the camp and as a contributing part of the workforce, she is able to get closer to the tribe and the Raute people's way of life. Kate then makes her way to Siberia, reaching the cold desert of snow and ice to live with some of the strongest surviving nomads of the world. Finally, she ends up in Mongolia, traveling with nomads from the secluded highland steppe, where she will learn about the challenges they face.

Kate..... I have seen your documentary related to Rautes from western Nepal, especially live in Dailekh Nepal. It tears me up too when you drop your tears. Really sorry to see that man who confront with Raute. In fact, cutting wood is their rights that governments allows them to cut them down for their settlement. Moving one place to another place. Rautes are not willing to be settled and not necessary settle them too. But government must working on conserved them for long term. Kamal

every human being on this planet is a nomad. our ancestors were all nomads, and even us in the so called first world are still nomads in once sense or another. even if you settle in one area for a time, you still end up being on the move, one way or another. and speaking of passing through this world.... well that is a nomadic journey in itself.

I sympathise with the Nepali common population not wanting the route camps around. Because the route do not have proper sanitation facilities it means they truly do defacate everywhere, the deforestation we've witnessed is another downside. Cutting down young trees on protected land around settlements is also very sad. If they stayed up in the jungle I Don't think all the conflicts would happen

Thank you for a great documentary. Planting Chinese timber bamboo could resolve the timber issue. The shoots are edible, tasty and very nutritious so though bamboo is fast growing and spreading, there's no risk the bamboo would spread too much and outcompete native species. Why not pay these nomads to plant the bamboo throughout the tracks? Chinese timber bamboo = Phyllostachys vivax f. aureocaulis

The nomads are right about the tree thing. It's not that big of a deal to take a small tree. Trees take a long time to reach maturity though, so you don't want to take the reproductive ones. Humans also are strange hunters because we don't take the small, weak, or slow animals like other animals do, but instead we go for the big ones- at least in the West.

re:Nepalise part: As a traveller / nomad myself (British Bargee) the reason (not justifying just illuminating) why they don't want her about - is because she's not very practical. I get silent rage when feckless randoms try to 'help'. They ought to have had a presenter who is more physically robust and useful. Confident about knots and folding canvas etc. When that is all of your worldy goods, some over-privileged person mishandling it all is beyond anxiety inducing. Also her energy is touristic rather than traveller. If you're a traveller your energy is readable. The energy is self conscious, performative and patronising - rather than grateful, humble and a student of their wisdoms. We are not zoo animals. Sorry Kate - you seem sweet for sure - but it's tribal. We are also prejudice/defensive due to the ignorant unkindness we get from non-travellers. After the initial payment you gave them, why not instead of money you might have gifted them tea? or tobacco etc? You're a guest in their home. You take wine to dinner parties with your friends no doubt. On watching further - it's so disrespectful to cry like that. Honestly - read the room!! ... none of them are crying. How dare you self indulge in your passing experience - while they live that way daily and no one was crying. pfff... so off the mark... you make them feel worse about their life projecting your pity. But much respect for her telling that ignorant pos in the shirt that "that would be a shame"... exactly... they are suffering for their joy. Westerners can hack up their bodies for 'beauty' but people some how see giving our bodies to a lifestyle as some how lesser and not socially acceptable. Not much to say on the subsequent nomads as they were more established, wealthier, friendlier and therefore easier for her to mesh with... but 'hurt people hurt people', the first group needed much more humanity and dignity in her manner.

Interesting documentary, however we as outsiders really need to put our 'ego' aside. Of course they would want to sell items to us. what other benefit are we offering them? Why should we be made to feel accepted and welcomed just because we want to. There is always an underlying arrogance and 'knowing better' from 'us'.. if they need money, buy some stuff from them! Don't be hurt because we're viewed as ATMs. Beautiful people.. leave them in peace ❤ĵ

@KateHumble, what gives you the right to infringe upon these people's lifestyle without invitation and without compensating them just as willingly as they have accepted you into their lives now that you're there. You have "fundraiser" highlighted in your description yet your criticizing them because their intelligent enough to know that they should be compensated for you exploiting them and studying them for your personal gain. You're literally taking these people for granted. How would you feel if a total stranger invited invaded your home for their benefit, for free. That is exploitation in it's worst form and you should really be ashamed of yourself.

Not for nothing but I think they need to stop having babies when they are living day to day themselves. I know that they have a really rough time and they need alot of help, but can they atleast not get pregnant in a place like this. I hate that they are going through this and I don't know what the dikes are going to do when it rains again but they need to be moved.
