When we say, she just got bullied by everyone because she did not fit in their body standards, we are just scratching the surface of it. The real reason for bullying is often that people just cannot bear to see another fellow human being be extraordinary. They cannot bear to see them shine, to be a light, to be close to legendary, because it reminds them of their own cowardice, to be dependent on approval, to be people pleasers most of the time, and their fear to shine. She is not only a stunning dancer, she also is of an exotic, burlesque kind of beauty, her boundless joy for her work just shows and makes her genius. Unfortunately, she also is vulnerable, wants to be accepted, and does not hide it, and that is why they start the hurting, because they know they can hurt. People are strange sad creatures. Keep shining, beautiful diamond!

I have a body type similar to hers: short, curvy, very muscular. At 20, I got really into weight lifting, then aerobics, then jogging. I was really good at it. It felt very natural, and I loved it. But then I became disabled. I couldn't work. I couldn't run. I couldn't weight lift. Walking a block is now almost impossible, even with a walker, and I have to use a motorized wheelchair to go any distance at all. I felt like I'd lost everything. But here's something I've learned. My natural muscularity, my years of dedication to fitness, my strong body awareness have all helped me immensely as a disabled person. My physiotherapists say I understand their instructions perfectly, and even invent perfect exercises to help myself. My shoulders and arms have become very strong as they take the load from my now disabled back. My body awareness makes me know which exercises, or medications, or ice, or heat, will help the specific kind of pain I'm having in that moment. I even understand what kind of clothing and footwear will help me the most, or hurt me the least. I thank God for my natural muscularity. I understand that my body type is a gift. And all those years that I dedicated to fitness are paying off in ways I never imagined. Please, everyone, love your body, cherish it, find what it's good at and go with it. That self love may pay off in ways you never expected.

If a lab tells me to do the test with an empty stomach, I would never argue that my stomach can't be "empty" because it has digestive enzyme, hydrochloric acids, etc. You online "professionals" need to have some common sense and think about why the physicians do not diagnose and treat patients based on KZbin comments.

I enjoy the competition and pushing myself to my limits, not necessarily the sport itself (basketball, gymnastics, soccer). I had far too many coaches (and teachers for performing arts - another passion of mine) coddle me. When my dad coached my soccer team when I was a kid he had the motto, "if you had fun, you won." The entire town hated when he coached. Every team he would coach would lose EVERY SINGLE GAME. My sister and I begged him to stop volunteering. There isn't one right way to be a coach. A coach is supposed to help an athlete improve and win. Of course, when someone is only starting to learn a sport it would typically be a bit abrasive at best to treat the kids as professionals (though some kids would take well to that), but at the level this woman is coaching it's really not going to be beneficial to be too nice.

Unfortunately, you missed the point. Katelyn has said in many interviews that she is very thankful for her coach (Miss Val, not the previous ones). Katelyn not wanting to be great wasn't a power move. It was a heartbreaking statement, and Miss Val recognized that. When she was the best, she hated the sport and herself. The video even says: "winning at all costs had cost her her joy." This coach helped her regain her love for the sport again and helped her get to a healthy mental state after years of abuse. She was a fantastic coach. The beginning was a little confusing but to clear it up, that awful winning at cost mentality is something she left behind twenty years ago after her first year coaching. I'm so glad that Katlyn found coach Val. She wasn't a real gymnastics coach but a dance one and their combination works like gold. Besides, because she wasn't a gym coach, she wasn't looking like the others for gold, she was looking for achievement, perfection, and most importantly, confidence.

Katelyn is so beautiful! I'm disgusted that people body-shamed her like that! Not only is she an incredible gymnast, she's suffered thru indespicable hatred. No one deserves that kind of treatment. I'm so happy for her that she's been able to realize her inner and outer beauty, and become a happy, healthy young woman once again! I wish I was as mentally strong as she is. I've been very hard on myself in so many ways. And my disappointment in myself wasn't even inflicted by anyone else. It's an internal battle I have with myself every day - that I'm not good enough, that I'm not man enough and that I remember only my failures and not my successes. I'm happy for her. Katelyn, you are a stronger person inside than most people I've met. Good for you.

She wasn't fat but her body was big for the sport itself. Being curvy in gymnastics actually is a detriment in the long term. Reason most of the girls are skinny in the sport. The body shaming was wrong yes but we can't put blinders on our eyes she indeed was a bit big for the sport. It doesn't take away from her skill\talent but if she compeated today she would have long term injuries or bodily damage in the long run.

Valery Liukin, Nastia’s dad, was Katelyn Oashi’s coach at WOGA, and the one who bodyshamed her and burnt her out as he didn’t pace her. I’ve heard very bad things about him. I love Nastia Liukin gymnastics, she’s probably my favourite one, but it seems he was only careful and did the right training with her daughter. Glad you pulled your daughter out of there.

@@andream1015 I would interact with Valeri on occasion during the mandatory volunteer sessions the parents have to do when cleaning the gym and such (If you didn't participate, you had to pay extra fees, as if they weren't getting enough money from me!). He always seemed like an ungrateful punk to me and I didn't care for talking to him. The other owner of the gym, Yevgeny Marchenko was much nicer to deal with. We have a picture of my daughter with Katelyn when she came to visit because my daughters coach at the time was one of Katelyn's coaches when she was younger. Katelyn was super nice to my daughter!

I feel bad for Nastia, tbh. Look at her now as a commentator of Tokyo Olympics, she looks sick. She looks so anorexic and she can't even look at the camera straight in the eye. So sad. The maniacs calling this girl chunky are delusional. One of the most talented gymnasts in the world at one time was crushed by criticism from small minded people. The psychological damage done by nasty people had a big impact. Sports is more than physical ability, it is also a belief in yourself and takes an enormous amount of confidence to become the best. When that confidence and belief in yourself has been shattered, the desire to compete gets sidetracked. It is no wonder she became bitter and lost her desire to compete. Fortunately for her, this coach as UCLA managed to rekindle her desire to be great again. It seems with a new approach and a changed attitude she has become great again. Proof that much of athletic success comes from the mind and the belief in yourself. Kudos to the coach for taking the time to see beyond the surface and find something to reconnect this girl with her passion.

I took ballet classes at an academy when I was younger, and the academy's director came into one of the classes to say in front of everyone that another girl and I were too fat and needed to lose weight. Personally, I thought that if anything, I just had curves that she could never have, but not unhealthily fat. I immediately recognized that the academy's culture was toxic and left knowing that I was better than that. I knew that there existed a healthier attitude towards dancing and performance. Focusing on weight and appearance is missing the point. It's about expressing who you are, in which you accept and love yourself for all of what you are - mind, body, and soul. Leaving was bold, but the process led me to a happier and healthier way of living.

Every move looked like she is a spring loaded with power, but she controls it so precisely while smiling her contagious cheeky smile. And if that wasnt enough, she has all the right curves. Anyone hating on her body is just plain jealous because she has got that body and her skill through years of hard work, discipline and sacrifice of which 99% of us are just not capable.
