In brief comments immediately after the race KT said something like she didn't feel 100% and she had a bad day. That's crazy. She only ran the ninth fastest collegiate indoor 5K of all time and the second fastest collegiate 5k of 2022 indoor or outdoor. And you know who ran the fastest (15:14 at the Virginia Challenge in May). In other words, this was a stellar performance any way you look at it. Why would she be disappointed? This was spectacular. Because she didn't break Sisson's record (15:12.22)? Wait.

I would say a slight off day due to being worn down but still an excellent time.

The whole narrative was kinda weird, talk about going under 15' FOR THIS RACE, she broke her indoor PB by 15" she wanted to break it by 30"? yikes. I have played sports and played well on days I felt like crap beforehand and the opposite has happened too, maybe she was just missing that adreniline rush. So, dumb question: was this set up for the collegians? that is, having Emma Coburn pace them out deliberately for that NCAA record attempt? Redenfels had to take the race of course b/c it was her home track. (so she just took advantage of the pacers + Tuohy lead?)

What a great race. You could tell that Tuohy was a bit off, like she never found her stride. She said that she had an off day and wasn't feeling well. Tremendous effort and drive regardless. I love her tenacity to never settle for anything less than her best. I can't wait to see what she does going forward.

Elite athletes are a whole different level from collegians. There are a good number of elite women (including at least one American) who can run this distance in the 14:30 range. Tuohy is a gifted collegiate athlete, but she’s not at the elite level. She has a good chance getting there in a few years, but there are also other excellent collegiate athletes and upcoming high school girls who are right on her heels. As a former distance runner (who never came close to making the elite level) I’m just happy to see such a large field of upcoming talented women distance runners. Now if we could just have the same thing happen with the men it would be really great.

2 pacers & a pro in Rodenfels was a great set up 2 bring down some of the Collegians PB's, especially w/Annie matching her 15:08. I just watched the Ethiopian pros, Letesenbet Gidey run a 14:06 & a half, breaking the record of 14:11 that I believe stood since 2008. Gidey had 2 pacers, Pace 1 & Pace 2, taking their correct turns at leading, unlike here when Jones dropped out from 2nd. Not only that, the pros now have a lighted inside track that flashes green for the runners to follow for record time pace in a 10m space, & then have 10m of blue lights flashing in front of the green to pace even better. Not at all fair to the runners of yesteryear (even though I know those today ran the time they did w/all the aids). Tuohy, Olemomoi have another minute plus yet to go.

I just watched this again a month later. I love Bill Rogers' commentary. He combines the hippie origins of this kind of running with the super-macho culture of Pre and the rest of the guys. He grew up with that. His perspective is unique, unless you could get Marty Liquori or somebody of the that ilk on board. Fantastic and, contrary to most of the comments, I love Bill's insights, from the point of view of a pure runner and competitor. I once (a long time ago) heard an interview with Bill where he was asked why he was so absorbed by long distance running, at a young age. He noted that his old VW was liable to crap out at any time. But, he said, he always had running shoes in the car so he could run home, even from 15 or 20 miles, if must needs be. And that gave him a sense of security, control, and well-being. Bill is still the same person and I love his perspective.

Terrible terrible production. The race was with Tuohy et al, and whether she'd break the NCAA record. The color guy didn't really seem to know who she was - Twoo wey he said at one point - and the play by play guy had to keep feeding him runners names. Then at the end the announcers are telling us about the terrific battle going on with Tuohy and they showed NONE of it, the producers choosing to follow the pro's easy victory. My understanding is that FloTrack actually charges for live coverage of their stuff. If I paid for this I'd be pissed and I think that a decent high school student's AV department would have better coverage and production values.

Why is the video title about the 2nd place finisher instead of the winner Annie Rodenfels? I'm not familiar with either one of them, but I think it is a bit dismissive of the effort, talent and skill of the winner to not be mentioned. I can only assume that Katelyn is the more well known athlete, and therefore whomever put up this video thought it would received more views with her name displayed, but you could have said 'Annie Rodenfels pulls off an upset over Katelyn Tuohy;' if you thought her name was so important that it just had to be in the title.

This was all a setup for the Collegians to run their personal bests & possibly break 15:00. That is Tuohy's goal. Tuohy, Cook, Chelangat & Olemomoi are the top collegiates along w/Valby. Tuohy says she wasn't 100% & neither were the pros w/the rabbits (Jones & Coburn) running 3:01, 3:02, & 3:03's to start. It all failed. Cook ran w/rabbits in HS. Tuohy, I believe never has. Anticipation probably cost her some. But wanting the best for Tuohy & Cook this race, I now see Olemomoi as the upcoming force.

Katelyn is pushing hard to reach global times while not training at elevation and perhaps 2 years before American runners hit their prime years. The question if pace will allow her to reach her max potential in 2 years 2024 or will put too much strain on her body.
@TheDjcarter1966
@TheDjcarter1966 2 жыл бұрын
Don't think she will advance that fast...she 13th at US Nationals to compete she probably needs to bring her time down 30 to45 seconds which is ALOT. I think her goal for this outdoor season is probably to break 15:00 and that would be an awesome accomplishment...after that those last 20 to 30 seconds are tough to come by...especially since she does have a shorter stride than most...but I to hope she can pull it off and compete for the USA next Olympics it's just a big ask at this point. Her peak is probably 3 to 4 years away still.

@@TheDjcarter1966 Elly Henes is her template and competition for an Olympic spot in 2024. While 3.5 years younger KT times and NCAA championships are 1 year behind. She has to get a under 15 min time in '23 and then have the kick to match or beat Elly in the Olympic trials. To win a medal she needs to turn pro and train at altitude, improve her 1500 to sub 4:00 and hope for a slow race.

This is one of the worse camera finishes I've ever seen. How can you get viewers to watch a race when you only see the winner finish and you don't see the most important part of the race - THE FINISH. Imagine watching a football game. Seeing the entire final 2 minute drive. Then the quarterback throws a game winning TD with seconds left and the camera pans over to the scoreboard to show the 6 points added. Instead of showing the catch in the endzone. What a joke. C'mon Track and Field cameramen. We're better than this. Listening to the announcer talk about Tuohy the entire race and then hearing the Alabama girls coming on strong and then seeing none of them finish is a complete mishap by the camera man. A few weeks ago I watched 155 women cross the finish line in a cross country race. But an indoor race with 22 women can only show 1 finisher. This has to be fixed going forward. So disappointing.

A couple of reasons. Coburn isn't a 5k runner. She runs the 3k steeplechase as her event. She can use this event as training, getting to run with some talented runners in a race environment. And finally, she was part of the 2 woman Addidas pacing contingent giving newest Addidas signee collegiate Katelyn Tuohy a chance at breaking some college records.
