I have C1a Scandinavian waist length hair, that is now 50% gray. Pinning up my hair would cause more breakage than leaving the braid down. I do recommend oiling before washing - every time. Older gals can and should keep their long hair! Oiling helps so much.

Natural Henna is great for all hair! It can be used alone- or as a way to add natural color (with pigment from indigo... etc). It strengthens the hair and makes it more resilient to damage. I use it once or twice a year usually to oomph my color and it lasts about 2 months, lessening gradually. Though I only use natural henna, it is possible to overuse henna which isnt good for your hair. Do some research- I've used a few different brands such as henna sooq, rainbow research henna, light mountain). Good luck!

@@sagebrush4524if you add the henna to an oil I believe you get the benefits of the chemicals in the henna without the colour. But you should do a patch test to make sure.

My hair is only just below my shoulders, but I COULD NOT be more excited to dive into this!!!!After being nervous about putting up my hair for years because I thought it would be damaging to my roots I wore my first bun in a long while the other day, my boar bristle brush arrived in the mail today, and I'm *this* close (after many hours of nearly losing my mind) to doing half decent milk braids in my hair - so excited to try some new routines. 😊 Thank you so much, Katherine, for sharing all this knowledge. 💛

I have similar issue, don't forget to switch up the styles, the parting and somewhat more elaborate updos worn all day tend to be more comfortable than quick and dirty styles to get my hair out of the way Also play with different tools (when your hair will be long enough to do so)clips tend to support the weight better than pin depending on the size and hair sticks cana be a nice way to have simple styles look more put together

Hey, try watching the blowout professors videos here on KZbin. Her methods are ones I grew up on from my parents and they actually kept my hair from growing and honestly left me unable to enjoy my hair. I was considering trying the methods as well after watching her videos until I did some more research. It actually kind of makes me angry. The "natural, holistic" trend is really misleading and can make you get trapped into a lifestyle thinking it's the only way you can preserve and maintain your hair when in reality it can be much more simple and allow you to not feel like you have to change your entire lifestyle. She used to use curly hair methods that were not effective and way too heavy. Now she's advocating for another extreme.

Whenever I tape my hair, my favorite tool is a bodkin from the Burnley & Trowridge company. (A bodkin is like a big dull needle with an eye that's large enough to put a ribbon through.) Their bodkins are made of bone. It's fairly easy to just sew your braids into place with them!

For those of you that need more length 😢 yep I fall into that realm still! I began working overnights and was losing so much hair!! It worried me. Turns out I was vitamin d deficit and when I began taking d3/ k2 my hair fall basically stopped the end of the first week taking it! The damage is already done because the end of my hair resembles the end of a rake. You can see through the ends, when before they were thick. Katherine, your hair routine just saved my life. I was having increasingly more scalp issues over the past year. One by one my scalp was reacting to nearly every product I tried, and I was at my wits end trying everything! I had made the same mistake in the past making a paste out of clay rather than liquid and swore never again, but your method and ratio actually worked and gets my hair gently clean but not stripped. My scalp is not reacting to it as long as I’m very gentle and wash thoroughly. I just cut my hair to shoulder length because I needed a fresh change after all that hair struggle, so I’ll tune in for the protective styles ☺️ thank you!

Hi, I just wanted to add some advices as a person who likes to do hairstyles. First of all, I you want to tie your hair with a piece of ribbon or thread but it constantly falls off, just fold it in the middle -ish and braid it with your hair as two strands of hair.( So the strands are hair and ribbon). At the end , you just twist it around the braid and tie it. Certified without slipping. And I recommend using u-shaped pins for buns or even milkmaid braids, they're more comfortable and you don't need many to hold a bun. Hope this helped, your video was really helpful ❤

It's now below my shoulder blades and I was debating cutting it off again but somehow came across one of your videos last week and ended up heading down another path. I'm now on my way to continuing to grow my curly/wavy hair even more and I'm actually excited to see the options for protective styles. I'm so happy I found your channel! Previously I would follow Brad Mondo and Blowout Professor. For a good month, I was set on just using professional hair products used in a salon, to give my hair that real health and beauty. But as challenging as my oily hair can be, I'm so excited to start my own natural hair care journey. And, yes. I was one of those girls who grew up wanting wild Pocahontas hair with curls that I could wear down all the time. But, after sitting through your explanation of why it's best to keep the hair up, I realized you make some great points, and I can still enjoy my hair with its up-do's. So, all in all, I can't wait to see results. I know it will take a while, but I'm patient. Anyway, thank you so much!

Hey Katherine, you can get bobby pins that are already 'wide' (the two metal bars are far apart, I'm not sure what the English term is). They're super useful and don't grip your hair as much as bobby pins but still hold your hair in place. The milkmaid braid without the parting are so pretty, I'm going to try it out! @jasdong6014 Evidently it does not work on 'loose' hair very well (say you're trying to just pin back your front pieces). They are too wide for this but if you want to make a bun or milkmaid braids (any type or hairstyle that involves it being 'up' in some kind of way) you 'hook' the one side of the pin into your braid/bun and hook the rest into the hair on your scalp. It creates a lot less tension than bobby pins and works just as well! In my native language they're called 'poking pins' which is exactly how you use them, you poke the loose hair into the tighter part of your hair (closer to the scalp or inside your bun/braid). Hope this helped :)

I've had long hair much of my life, and inadvertently have been following many of the suggestions you give here-not for my hair, per se, but because I'm prone to headaches. I've largely worn my hair in ways that put as little stress on my scalp as possible, and it's become habit over the years. Never thought that this is probably going to lead to hairstyles that are kind to the hairs themselves, but I guess you're not really thinking like that when you have a headache, lol. Btw, this may sound ridiculous, but I'd never thought of hiding the ends of milkmaid braids under the "scalp" hair! I've always just pinned the ends under the opposite braid, like buckling a harness.

As someone with very fine and long hair I find that aloevera gel combined with coconut oil is very good for moisturizing and taming the ends, both when putting it up and leaving it down. I mix this in my hand by using about a fingernail worth of coconut oil and a dime size squirt of aloe gel in the palm of my hand, rub my hair together to warm and combine everything and then stroke it through the ends of my hair. If the weather or my hair is very dry I might add a tiny bit of shea butter to this.

Love this!! I can't wait to try the "zero tension" bun with the front twists, it looks so pretty but not fancy enough that I feel like I'm trying too hard 😅 I have a tip for the long hair French twist: instead of folding the hair in half and then twisting from the ends, just grab the hair in a low pony position with your fingers under the hair, thumb on top, and twist up by rolling your hand with the loop of hair over it. The ends of your hair just get sucked into the twist so you don't have to fuss with tucking them, and then you have a nice loop of hair on top that you can either smush under the twist or form into a little bun. Hard to describe without images lol but I hope that makes sense! It can be dressy or messy and it's super fast

These are good styles! I find that using a long ribbon helps me to hold my hair in place without putting any tension on my scalp - I especially like to use it for a crown braid, and "sew" the ribbon around the braid so that it catches the hair underneath and distributes the weight evenly.

I don't blow dry it (but that dryer you mentioned intrigues me!). Anyway, I often put my hair up in a bun with a hair fork but my hair is never fully dry, and still a bit damp when I take it down at the end of the day. Now that I understand about the bacteria, it makes sense why sometimes when I miss a day of washing (not there yet) I need to do an ACV rinse. BTW I love your videos and have learned so much. I have done a faux (I think it's not technically the 'right' way to do a French twist, but I'm not sure) French twist for some years now. My hair has most recently been waist-to-hip (trimmed the split ends recently so it's on the shorter end), but it's straight, thin and fine. I wish I just had a picture to show what it looks like but I don't often take pictures of my hair lately. My principles with hair are as few securing tools as possible, definitely keeping ends hidden, and as smooth and volume-y as possible. Maybe the hair powder and other tips you mentioned may help with creating volume in my hair without needing to use bobby pins (which can cause me soreness; my hair can be so slippery). The 'pretty' hairstyles I do therefore can cause soreness, and maybe Holdilocks (or a kind of leather thing I can stick hairsticks through) may help. Because of money I haven't tried too many alternatives, and generally I felt like my hairstyles were okay, until your videos showed up and I am wondering what is causing my hair to shorten. I can imagine some people would be interested in the tricks I figured out to put long hair away, and to make thinner hair appear thicker, but I do want to find out even better ways. The least work for the greatest gain!

Hi Katherine, comment nr two because I read a few negative comments, & I just want to show some support. I loved this video! And I did not mind the promotion at all. So many others do it, why not you too?? And this was JAM packed with information and inspiration 🎉 (for me with my chin length fine hair that is growing and feels stronger thanks to YOUR videos & the information you share 💕). Lovely work... And it is funny, I think of you when I am tired and feeling ineffective and admire you putting out content AND sewing etc WHILE being a pregnant mother to active youngster... you get ALL the gold stars in my book! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is the video I had been waiting for. I have fine hair. For more than a decade I've been trying to grow it long. It never gets past my shoulder blades. For several weeks I've been using following your historic hair care tips, using the herbal oil on Friday night, washing with clay on Saturday, and my hair is so oily! I'm going to try the dry shampoo and get the holdi-locks. Thanks for doing this research.

This is a video I didn't know I even wanted ❤ I've been so lazy with my hair for a while now and I've been putting it up while wet (even though I know I shouldn't) and then when I try to do something with it my hair is so...meh. The way you explained why I shouldn't put my hair up wet made so much sense and maybe it'll help me get out of that habit to reclaim my curl health!

One hair tool I fell in love with and seems to work better for me than Bobby pins is a hair spiral pin! They twist into the hair instead of pinching it. Thank you for these videos! I am excited to try this all out. I so like wearing my hair down so it will be hard, but I want to see if I can adopt a natural routine.

Spin pins are the best! In the US they are made by Goody I think. I have several packs of these and I swear by them. Don’t bother with bobby pins on a bun, these are so much better.

I've just found you in 2024 August.. I cut my hair off to chin length in February to start again too! I tried not washing my hair for 3 years and it was long around waist length, but I was rinsing it with water x3 a week and then found out our water in our area was really really hard water. Haha such a journey. I have shoulder length now and I have been looking after it in a conventional way cause I have still been learning.l.ans trying to figure out what to do to move to a natural hair area system that is going to serve me. With all the info I've seen something hasn't felt right. I have fine straight hair but she grows quite quickly and has always been healthy. I just want to grow it out super long, past my hips and butt In my lifetime. My mother has long wavy hair and in her 60s it still grows soooo fast and beautifully. She has to cut it all the time to keep it at her waist as it grows so fast! Your way just makes sense because it's based on historical evidence and I can see now why my mother always has her up in a large spread out bun. I'm a massive lover of vintage makeup techniques and skincare and honestly your videos are so informative. I've been wanting to move into a more natural way of skincare and hair care but the standard no poo method was not working for me and I'm so glad I found you because I seriously see the logic in everything you say and can see how I can make this work! I love this. I'm gonna get your oil too! So good girl. Ps. Your vids are like ASMR xx

Milkmaid are one of those styles that looks really soft and delicate but I like to start my braid above the ears (around temple height) it gives me more of a 40s somewhat more statuesque look. Also if you have visibly greasy hair and you like historical and vintage styles: use it to your advantage ( I personally like to do a 30s inspired low updo when my hair is greasy) for the slight majority of styles between the 19th and the 20th centuries (except a little part where frizziness was fashionable) I was common for women to put litteral grease on their hair to style them (yes that's why those 1850s updos were so shiny) PS if you're hair is just not long enough to do milkmaid braids: a)protective styles may not be something to concern yourself with quite yet b) don't be afraid to start the braids higher up than expected (I tried a 16th century version where the braids start right on top of the head and, beside being unconventionnal, It didn't look half bad) and think about curling it beforehand if your hair is not already curly and let the ends just losely cascade out of the braids

This was very informative and I am definitely planning on trying out some of the hair styles.I have somewhat damaged my hair with chemical processing (it was navy blue for a while ...I think the hairstylist was glad to see the end of that service because it took allll day) I have always wanted to have long hair but never understood how to actually get it to keep growing. After giving birth to my daughter about 2 years ago, my curly rib cage length hair completely broke off, resulting in me having to even it out to collar bone length. Unfortunately I let the stylist talk me in to layers, and now I’m having trouble with most protective styles. My longest sections reach past my shoulders now, but shorter pieces are still at chin length. I couldn’t quite get these to work because of the length variation. Hoping my baby braid with short pieces just sticking out wrapped in a scarf at night will protect it enough to let the layers grow out so I can try some of your recommended styles here, because I really don’t want to start over with another chop. I’m taking msm now, washing with rhassoul clay/ACV, implementing your oiling routine and continuing to learn about gentle and natural hair care. Thank you for your thoroughly informative videos! I’m already seeing improvement in my overall hair health in only 6 months, so I’m hopeful I’ll see the results I want with consistency and a little more time! ❤️

Hi Katherine, thank you so much for this! 🥰💕 You did a great job of demo-ing the double French braids. I did not think of TWO French braids!! Brilliant. I tend to leave it loose, or I use combs gently on the sides and then sort of twist up the ends and then use a hair clip to keep them there, but the ends are still exposed this way. I am not sure I have the length yet to do a great double French braid tuck, but I am close.... Thank you! 💕Now to train my arms to be ok braiding... they get tired up there in the air 😂

Thank you for sharing all of this great info about gentle hair care! It's good to know about Holdi-Locks, too. I have very fine, thin, straight hair that currently reaches my waist. I do a lot of field work that often involves ducking under trees and shrubs, with potential for branches and spiny leaves to get caught in my hair. I stopped using conditioner I think in the summer of 2019, and with my boar bristle brush to move sebum down my hair strands, I don't miss conditioner at all. It's amazing how dependent I had thought I was on that class of product, that isn't needed. My go to hairstyles are an off-center part with either 1) French braids that I form into a flat bun that can fit under my sun hat (which provides a lot more protection from the plants), or 2) French twists into rope twists , formed into a bun or 3) French twists until just past my ears, then leaving the back section of hair (lower than my ears) out of the initial French twists, after making a small rope twist on each side, I'll braid the two rope twists and remaining hair together, then form a flat, low bun with that, with the ends tucked in. The options with twists are the fastest to put up. I love how much volume and curliness my hair has when I take it out of these styles (for a short while, at least - the straightness re-exerts itself fairly quickly), although if I've been in the field, I do end up showering soon after I get home. I often use bobby pins to fasten the buns, but another option I've been using in the past several years are flexi clips from Lilla Rose. (The new sport flexis have a figure-8 portion made of steel encased in a material that feels like silicone, with a plastic clip that slides into them, and can be used in different orientations depending on whether you need to hold more or less hair.) They've been staying put in my hair, which is amazing, since most hair clips and barrettes have a tendency to slide right out! The older style flexi clips, which I also love for a lot of different hairstyles, from buns to french twists to partially up styles, come in a variety of materials, including some rather elegant ones with beads in metal, wood, glass, plastic, or semi-precious stones. I imagine the ones with beads might have a bit more tendency to cause friction on hair strands, at times, in contrast to the sport flexis, which are likely gentler. There are also leather options and a wide variety of other hair ornaments, including hair sticks, u-pins (forks), bobby pins, hair bands, etc. I'm not a Lilla Rose stylist, but I definitely recommend checking them out!

A girl made a video on sport hairstyles and she gave a great review of the spin pins keeping the hair securely in place. Her channel is named Buttercup Farm Girl (and the video is Gymnastics Hair Buns Best & Worst). I can’t rely on hair sticks anymore since my fine diameter thick-volume straight/slightly wavy hair has grown to thigh length and collapses out of the bun unless I use hairpins and/or super tight scrunchies instead. I will get spin pins when I find some.

What is your opinion on sandalwood combs? I have very fine dry aging hair. I find the sandalwood comb tends to not pull on tangles and tear your hair. I also have a wide-toothed detangling sandalwood comb that is an equivalent to finger detangling with very little hair-pulling. I might lose a couple of strands when detangling or none at all. The sandalwood comb is very good when distributing hair oil. Also, What is your opinion about using old fashioned u-shaped hairpins. I prefer them to bobby pins - you just have to use more of them get the proper hold, but I think they are gentler on your hair.

Hello Katherine! I discovered your channel today, and as an aspirant for having at least waist length hair and natural hair care practices, as opposed to modern, too chemical-heavy techniques, I am finding your videos very informative, detailed and with the technique to incorporate the natural and earthy hair -care practices. I come frol India, and yes, we have a culture of natural practices, coconut oil, henna and using natural oils, herbs traditionally, my mom, maternal aunt and my sister all had impressive hair, way past their waistline, at they have great hair, even now when they are in their sixties, and fifties respectively 😅 so, yeah..I know this stuff. However, I actually struggle growing my hair past my bra- band, the reasons may be, I don't know but my habits, I am very much into hair washing, shampooing every alternate day, and having a finer hair quality then them, they all have traditional, thick black Indian hair, much like you, while i have a fine, lighter brown, wavy hair..lol, dont know who I inherited it from😊🤭 a couple of years ago, in my late twenties, I i used to have thicker, coarse hair, with a lot of volume, but as i got into my thirties, I have struggled with hairfall, and hair thinning a lot...on top of it, i experimented quite much with a lot of hair products, shampoos, serums etc. But, i guess now it is my cue to go back to more earthy practices, as this is what i am being called to, now, and finding your channel is a sign✨🌿😌 I would appreciate if you do a video on coloring hair, naturally, as I am beginning to see a couple of greys on my scalp 🥺 and I do use henna powder to colour and condition my tresses, but I would like to know what you have to say in that area! Thanks, I am a subscriber now👍🏻🌿🪻

Until about 2 months ago my hair was almost as long as yours. I have very oily hair and i have to wash it every 2 days otherwise I get massive oil build-up which causes my scalp to react badly. So for about 2 or 3 years I was washing it every 2 days because I needed to and i was hairdrying and straightening my hair every time because I hated having wet hair and my hair texture is frizzy and I just wanted it to be straight and look nice! This meant that a lot of my hair broke off around my hairline and the ends were awfully dry and straw-like. I couldn't wear my hair down because you could see that my hair in the last 8 inches was so much thinner due to breakage, it looked awful. I stopped using heat to dry my hair about 14 months ago after finally accepting I was the cause of the damage and it's finally growing and no longer snapping, but It took me so long to grow my hair waist-length that I didn't want to cut off the 8 inches or so that was damaged and where alot of my hair had broken off to. I eventually 2 months ago decided enough was enough and chopped off that 8 inches! I'm still getting used to shorter hair (it's not that short, it's about boob-length now) and im determind to take good care of it from now on. No more heat styling and definitely no more hairstyles that cause tention! Thank you for making this video, it really helped me learn what protected hairstyles I can use. Some of the styles you showed I already do and I didn't know they had names, I thought i'd just made them up! 🤣
