In a one v one fight, in theory you have a 50% chance. The odds of doing it twice and winning both is 25%. He won 80 of those. A true legend.

The part that makes it more impressive, as well, is that this was when planes were pretty much brand new, as technology goes, and were very unreliable and made out of, essentially, wood and paper. He was using a new, largely undeveloped, and clunky technology like it was some well refined, master crafted tool. Imagine what he could have done with later planes.

Если предложить что в каждом воздушном сражение у него был шанс победить 50%, выходит что шанс победить в 80 сражениях равняется 8,27•10^-23 % или 0,00000000000000000000000827%.

They were nicknamed the flying circus because of the colorful machines and because they were used mobile all over the front. You never knew where they were the next day. It wasn't just their flying skills that guaranteed their success, but also their superior aircraft. In the aforementioned April, the Allies had no equivalent machines and the flying circus swept the skies empty.

Fun fact, The Red Baron's Squadron was called "The Flying Circus" which was was where Monty Pythons Flying Circus, got the last part of their name, more precise The title Monty Python's Flying Circus was partly the result of the group's reputation at the BBC. Michael Mills, the BBC's Head of Comedy, wanted their name to include the word "circus" because the BBC referred to the six members wandering around the building as a circus, The group added "flying" to make it sound less like an actual circus and more like something from World War I. The group was coming up with their name at a time when the 1966 Royal Guardsmen song Snoopy vs. the Red Baron had been at a peak. Freiherr Manfred von Richthofen, the World War I German flying ace known as The Red Baron, commanded the Jagdgeschwader 1 squadron of planes known as "The Flying Circus." The words "Monty Python" were added because they claimed it sounded like a really bad theatrical agent, the sort of person who would have brought them together, with John Cleese suggesting "Python" as something slimy and slithery, and Eric Idle suggesting "Monty". They later explained that the name Monty means Lord Montgomery, the great general of the Second World War".

add to perspective, I believe the US Ace of aces in WW1 finished on 26 down aircraft, in WW2 tho, you'd think in the jump in technology, skilled pilots would get more, again for the US that was Dick Bong with 40 while flying his P38 Lightening in the Pacific theatre Now I know some German aces claim triple figure like Hartman and Galand, but I believe many of those were against the Soviet air force in mostly inferior aircraft (in my opinion) plus they also claimed heavily damaged aircraft as kills (again I believe) anyway thats my take
@Mischnikvideos
@Mischnikvideos 4 ай бұрын
@@CadarnTheMad1810 In WW1, von Richthofen shot down 80 planes alone. The other pilots in his squadron had a similarly high number of kills. This was due to poor aircraft and poor training among the Allies. The Allies should have invested more time in their air force, which the Germans did not allow. In WW2, the kills were mainly English and American planes. Then, as now, the generals relied on air superiority. In WW2, this meant primarily mass. You cannot carry out area bombings on cities with two planes. The Allies sometimes attacked with hundreds of planes. One of the German pilots said after the war: "The sky was full of planes, we couldn't shoot past them." In addition, the Germans had the first air-to-air missiles and the first jet fighters. Anyone fighting against Germany is fighting against a high-tech army. This means corresponding losses, including for Americans. On the Eastern Front, the fighting took place mainly on the ground.

Our local public library had a book on the Red Baron written in 1927 . I read it in 1970 and read it again around 2000 , I think it had only been checked out four times over the years , which was a shame . As an intimidation tactic all of the planes under the Baron's command were painted red , but had a small splash of another color to set them apart from his plane . Imagine flying along and having 30 red planes diving after you from out of the sun where they had been hiding . The Baron had claimed 81 " kills " , but was credited with 80 . His younger brother Lothar flew under his command for a while . The Royal Guardsmen did a couple of novelty records during the sixties " Snoopy vs. the Red Baron " and " Snoopy's Christmas " .

The Red Barons total at his death was 80 enemy aircraft officially shot down. Unofficially there were probbaly a lot more but many were not counted as they were either not witnessed or could be fully verified. 21 of those 80 were shot down in a single month of April 1917. One of the Barons main tactics as was shown in the video when he said "aim for the man and don't miss". The Baron would aim for the pilot of the aircraft and not the aircraft itself. This was basically to deprive the enemy of a pilot and a plane at the same time. Just damage the plane and the pilot could survive and return to fight again....take the pilot out you take a pilot and plane from the enemy.

The day Richthofen died he had violated several of Boelcke's and his own rules of engagement; flying too far behind enemy lines, flying too low, flying too long in pursuit of an enemy. There has been a lot of speculation on whether this was due to his mental state, a death wish, or just weariness as a result of too many years of war. It is known that the German High Commnad tried to get him to stop flying, not wanting to risk his loss but that he refused, feeling he need to lead his pilots. Congrats on 40K.

Great song and a great reaction. I recomend you do the Sabaton song "Screaming Eagles". The 101 Airborne division (nicknamed the Screaming Eagles”) is an elite modular specialized light infantry division of the United States Army trained for air assault operations. During WW2 they fought in several major campaigns and battles, including the Battle of the Bulge, around the city of Bastogne. The Siege of Bastogne was an engagement in December 1944 between American and Nazi German forces and Sabaton have done a very cool video here. If you know your american history from this time you will recognise all the events.

Manfred Von Richthofen known in English as The Red Baron and German as Rote Kampfflieger (The red fighter pilot). He is portrayed in many more recent cartoons and shows as a devilish character and a villain but in real life Manfred was a very honorable soldier and pilot. He started in 1909 as a calvary soldier and became a pilot in 1915. He is considered the best of the best and holds the record for largest amount of planes ever shot down by a single pilot in WW1 (80). He died leading his plane into enemy territory near the end of the war in April of 1918. How he got shot down is debated to this day with theories ranging from another fighter shot him down to anti air guns shot him down to a soldier from below fired into his cockpit to shoot him down. When French soldiers found him his last words were allegedly "alles kaputt" which roughly translates to "it's finished or it is done" in English.

It is also known the tri that he flew was newer and relatively untested. Some believe he had troubles with the disconnecter on his guns leading to firing problems and potentially creating a problem with his prop. So much is hotly debated in historians circles. Only one man knows for sure. Dead men tell no tales 🤷

The reason the planes are so colorful is that its way easier to spot own units and it prevents friendly fire from the ground. Do you remember Snoopy having a Dogfight ( :P) with the Red Baron? He was and still is that popular, that during the Vietnam War, several USAF F-4 and F-111 Units made their own unofficially local made Crew Patch with Snoopy and the Red Baron. Todays German Airforce's 71st Tactical Fighter Wing bears the Name "Richthofen" with a red capital "R" as tactical Sign Fun Fact: The line "from the Horseback to the sky" comes from the fact, that Manfred von Richthofen started his military carreer as a Cavalry Officer

Never heard of this band. Great reaction great track and history lesson. Fascinating story Von Richthofen actually flew a tri plane with 3 wings made by Fokker which was more manoeuverable than the bi planes. He had it painted RED so the pilots he led could identify him in the air. It also made him a prime target for the allied pilots. He actually shot down 80 aircraft before he was shot down and killed in April of 1918. I have an interest in military history my Grandfather and his twin brother fought in World War 1 (his twin was killed at Ypres) My Father fought in World War 2.

Richtofen had learned tactics well, but in many ways he wasn't an extraordinary pilot. Competent yes. Richtofen was Polish - at that time Poland was part of the Prussian Empire/Second Reich (this partially explains why Hitler invaded Poland first - to reclaim parts of the empire for the Third Reich). Richtofen was very mindful of the people who died because of him. He made note during battles of where downed planes were, and when the battle was over he collected tags and sent their names on to respective nations. In the earlier part of his career, he kept the tags. Later in the war, the government needed resources and took all the tags, so he stop collecting the tags. They called him Baron von Richtofen, but the Baron title was somewhat meaningless - the government handed out titles to a lot of people - including another Richtofen. When the plane was shot down, people rushed it and ripped it apart for souvenirs. Barely any of it is retain today. There were enough parts to determine that he was shot down by anti aircraft fire - not another plane. The probable unit would be the Australians. Richtofen himself did have aircraft bullets in him from his last battle, plus shrapnel from the anti-aircraft fire. The normal tactics he should have followed would have kept him out of range of AA fire. Although there is dispute, some say that he was trying to cover a junior pilot that stray into range of the AA fire. That junior pilot did escape. If you haven't done so already, you should check out Sabaton's song about the Nightwitches - and all female Soviet bomber unit. Also check out Sabaton's song about Sargent York "82nd All the Way"

Not entirely true. Many of his kills were from a sub machine gun. He was a great sniper but people exaggerate him a lot. He was mainly killing Russian conscripts who weren't well equipped and were slowed by the harsh Finnish winter. So it wasn't like he was making spectacular kills. Many of his shots were easy to make because of the conditions listed above.
