The reason Yevdokiya Rachkevich took it upon herself to find all the crash sites and remains is actually more complex - if the remains were unaccounted for, the Soviet Union saw that as potential evidence of desertion. So finding their remains was important to make sure their memory wasn't stained by unfounded suspicion.

Commissar Rachkevich finding the crash-sites is important; the 588th is the only Russian Air Force unit in WW2 where *none* of the personnel are listed 'Missing in Action--Presumed Dead; Resting-Place Unknown'. Yevdokia Yakovlevna Rachkevich was nicknamed 'Mother' by her girls during the war; in the end, 'Mother' brought all her girls home.

Even though they were treated badly in the end, the Commissar had it in her heart to search for the downed Night Witches and brought their memories back home to mother Russia. A couple additional facts that i may have remembered correctly. When they cut off the engine they had to handstart it again. Midflight. In the dark. Every single time. Also, the germans rewarded their pilots with the highest medal possible, if they downed a single night witch. That is how terrified they were.

I was surprised to know exactly how early some women in the world,actually volunteered into military services,i thought it was mainly a thing we have seen in recent years,where women demanded to be let into the military. I knew there were female soldiers or at least some that were part of resistance troops in some countries,but i had no idea that there were that many. Sabaton has found a unique formula,to educate the youth and even us adults through music and music videos. They have gotten soo much feedback from parents,school teachers etc that are baffled and thankful for making theyr kids/students so eager to learn about historical events. Because before they discovered Sabaton,they showed no interest for this.

There is a good book "The Night Witches" which tells a lot of their stories including Lydia Litvyak, Russian fighter ace who decorated her cockpit with flowers but shot down (officially) 12 "kills"( and possibly 2 or 3 more plus 3 or 4 shared) - A German ace did not believe she had shot him down until she recounted the dogfight exactly. She was 14 when pilot-trained, 15 when she had her first solo and trained 45 other pilots before she joined 586th Fighter Regiment. She saw her fiance, pilot officer Salomatin, crash a supposedly repaired Yak fighter on a test flight - so she took off and shot down some more Germans.

Two additional all female aviation regiments were created, the 586th Fighter Aviaton Regiment (flying the Yak-2) and the 587th Bomber Aviation Regiment (flying the Petlyakov Pe-2). However, due to pilot and crew shortages, they soon became mixed gender regiments. BTW, you often see the statement "My favorite Sabaton song is the last one I heard" reflecting the fact that there are no bad Sabaton songs.

@Kathy, Lulu, and Donna: Three Generation Reactions: Just so you know, the entire reason why the Commissar, Yavdokiya Rashkevich, went out looking for her girls was because of Soviet military protocols. Essentially, Soviet military protocols dictated that any service person who was listed as MIA (Missing-In-Action) would not get any military awards, nor would their families get any benefits after their deaths. This was because the Soviet military Chain of Command could not be sure if someone missing was merely missing, KIA (Killed-In-Action), or had deserted or defected. Thus, she went out to find every place to ensure that her girls got every benefit and award they were due, and in the process, made one of the most accurate records of any military unit in history. This story is also truly history, with the last Night Witch passing away in 2017. Edit: The medal "Hero of the Soviet Union" was equivalent to the United States' award "Medal of Honor," which was the USSR's highest military honor.

i've always said that if teachers would teach the ENTIRETY of the war and include incidents such as this, not just "oh we're gonna learn about WWII and why hitler was an asshole. turn to page 25 line 4." that's the reason students typically have no interest in WW 1/2 history. they only teach the plain boring politicals of it all. i guarantee if they instead taught that stuff but also include things like this, i can almost guarantee that the students would pay attention in war history class FAR more regularly than the way it's taught now.

Night Witches is for me one of the most powerful songs and stories that Sabaton brings to the table. This was Sabaton's 7th studio album 'Heroes' (the theme of the record was the soldiers of wars who became victorious heroes)... 'Night witches' was the opening track and 'No bullets fly' was track #2... It was the first Sabaton album to chart in the USA (#99) in 2014... and also the 1st to feature new members Chris Rorland (guitar), Hannes Van Dahl (drums) and Thobbe Englund (guitar)... Englund was replaced by current guitarist Tommy Johannson in 2017. Joakim Broden (vocals/ keyboards) and Par Sundstrom (bass) have remained the key songwriters of Sabaton. Other songs from this record - 'To hell and back' ... 'Resist and bite'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

To Hell and Back is sobering when with the context about Lt. Murphy suffering from extreme PTSD, having trouble coping after the war and being prescribed highly addictive drugs as a "cure". Our heroes deserved better than that.

Womens input in the wars is severely underrated. Usually only talked about on the homefront working the factories, or as nurses in the field hospitals. But there were women actually in legit combat. Along with the Night Witches, there were also the Sniper Girls on the Russian Front. Edit: i couldnt leave this out. Germans feared the women more than the men, as far as the journals written go. Women couldnt really surrender knowing what would happen if taken alive, so they were known to fight with an intense ferocity.

Do you think firing a rifle in war is useful? You need bullets and trucks all that jazz. You couldn't wage the war without women. Mankind is designed to leave women out of combat. You can have 100, women and 5 men left and repopulate. You could have 100 men and 5 women you can not repopulate. War is death who is meant to die is clear. Perhaps that is why people always talk about the Russian women fighters. Everyone forgets that the soviets suffered like 25 million war casualties. That's 1-5 of the total population. Probably closer too 1/2 of all the men. Ie the Russians were running out of expendable resources. The Russian women fighting simply meant the Russian culture was willing to bet everything its very future in that war. Ie they would all die or they would win. That is an uncommon decision usually not made bye societies.

Commissar Yevdokiya Rachkevich's search for her crashed comrades had another very practical reason. The Soviet command assumed that anyone "missing in action" might have defected, so their families were often viewed with suspicion and denied any compensation or pensions due if the combatant was known to have been killed. Finding someone's remains could make a large social and financial difference to their surviving relatives in the austerity of the post-War years.

you mentioned about how the band teaches history, i was at the first viewing of the film the war to end all wars the movie at the tank museum in England and there was a young fan of sabaton there who has just started to study ww1 at school and is able to show her knowledge when asked about the defence of Belgum she could say October 1918 from the song Race to the sea which prompet her teacher to ask how she knew to which she replyed from a sabaton song

I had suggested this, too, so thank you for doing it! I remember an interview with a surviving Night Witch. She said if you dug your fingers into the plane, it would rip. They were that flimsy. She spoke fondly of a girl who had survived several flights out. Queens. Every last one of them. Their commander went to go find them, because they were considered traitors and defectors, as they never came home. She went out herself to find proof that they died for their country and found them all, accomplishing her goal before she passed away.

My grandma was part of the Women's Air Service Pilots WASP. they tested the prototypes for WW2 bombers. And even did the deliveries. She was almost forced to turn back while delivering a flying fortress because the radio operator couldn't comprehend that the lady on the radio was the B17 pilot requesting landing permissions and kept cutting her comms before she could request landing.

You have sooooo many great songs left to react to. *Screaming Eagles* (US 101 Airborne Division liberated Bastogne, Belgium from Nazis 1944). *Unkilkable Soldier* (tells the story of Sir Adrian Carton De Wiart. Born of Belgian heritage but fought for the British Empire during WW1. Being injured multiple times he became known as the “Man who could not be killed”) *The Last Stand* The story about the Swiss guards who defended the Pope in 1527 against a large army, consisting of Germans, Spaniards and Italians march on Rome frustrated over unpaid wages and lacking supplies. *The Lion From The North* (Tells the story about the swedish king Gustav Adolf nicknamed as The Lion from the North who became king at 17 in 1611) Just to name a few..

The song is specifically about the 30 years war in europe that took place between sweeden, The Holy roman empire(germany), poland and russia but its fitting song for all soldiers.

Some of the other facts that arent mentioned regarding the night witches are even more insane. For example, the little biplane engines to restart would normally have to be cranked or the propeller spun to start. The way they did this was typically the navigator would climb out onto the wing and spin the propeller, in mid flight. Similar ways for deploying their bombs in case they were stuck to the wings. The design of the biplanes would also play in their favor. With the introduction of radar becoming more and more prevalent on the WWII battlefields, the biplanes canvass and wood construction meant that their radar signature was almost non existent, removing another potential way to detect them. The term Nachthexen (night witch) also came from their planes. With their engines off, gliding over the enemy position and only a few dozen meters or so over the ground, the fluttering of the canvass was considered to be the fluttering of a witches cloak or their broom. On top of this, german stories and memoirs of the eastern front described the planes as being so quiet, stealthy and manouverable that they could sneak up, poke in through the window and shoot you while you were on the toilet, or even peep in through the keyhole of your door.

Like with many other parts of that war, because the US was completely untouchable behind the massive oceans, we di not have the desperation and necessity that so many nations felt during the war. Women throughout Europe served in front line combat because the front line was right there... and the men learned to respect them because of it. In the US forces, because we never felt that threatened, we believed that our own "softer"women could never step up the way women in Poland, Russia, Germany, France, Britain and the others did... that "our" women could not fight with the men, could not hold their own... and even 80 years later you still see it. The move for women to stay home and take care of the house was actually a response to that. A claim that, unlike men in Europe, American men could take care of their families, that "our" women did not need to work. Any historian knows, as I am sure you would too, that lower income families have never had the option of just not working... not kids, not women, not even the elderly. But it was a claim of pride to those men. Stories like the Night Witches, the Lady of Death, or the hundreds of other women who fought and in so many cases died alongside men... they were not well respected by US forces because they considered it a sign of weakness. A war where "did you send your mommy to protect you". More than 80 women received the "Hero of the Soviet Union" (like our Metal of Honor) during the war. 7,000 women served in the Polish army during the fight to keep Russia and German out of their country. Dozens of French women served in the Resistance, trying to force out German invadors.... and I love that some of them are finally being recognized.

(And it worked even if English is a 2nd language here in Sweden). She also likes Sabaton and will probably come with me to their next concert. "This is probably my favourite Sabaton song.." 😆 Well, it will not be the last time you say that! 🤭 I have so many by now that I've stopped counting! Next: "Swedish Pagans" (live from the Great Show, Prague, 2020). It's about vikings. It's not that easy to hear the lyrics from a live show, but they have info about the topic on their website with each song. And you can also check out the Sabaton History Channel on YT. Sabaton are big on history around the wars and even have their own sites doing research. They generally pick on battles that are not well known. one of my favourite is "The Last Battle". Was about the time German, American, French and English at the end of the war all came together to fight in a castle in Austria. against the SS.

"Suggestions for Sabaton"? Sure. Go for "Bismarck" which is absolutely awesome. The song itself is a banger, the history behind it is (mostly) spot on and the video is worthy of a movie. Another video people really like to react to is "En Livstid I Krig" which should be watched as the live version. Anything else from Sabaton is usually welcome. And, if i may be so bold, I highly suggest "Epica featuring Floor Jansen - Sancta Terra". It's probably the epitome of what happens when a metal band decides to hire a whole freaking classical orchestra for a live show. It's really, really good. Something i really find cool about them is that oftentimes the bombs weren't dropped like actual bombers (like from the wings or a proper bomb bay) but were held by the women in their seats as the planes flew, and theyd just arm and toss them out by hand. Which is just beyond insane and badass

Love to see you enjoying your journey with Sabaton! I think it's time for you to see a live concert video. Might I suggest "en livstid i krig". This one is sung in Swedish so you will need the subtitles on. The song is about the 30-year war that Sweden took part in, in the 1600s. There are many other songs that Sabaton sings about the cost and horrors of war. These would be 1916, A Price of a Mile, and Angels Are Calling. No, they are not fun but Sabaton sings them so we will not forget those who paid the price of war.

Suggestion. Screaming Eagles. The 101st airborne was surrounded by 3 German armies in bastogne. Hopelessly outnumbered, low on ammo, in the middle or a storm, they stood alone and defended a vital crossroads at the battle of the bulge. This is personal to me as I was a Screaming Eagle 40 years ago. The battered bastards of bastogne cemented the legendary status of the 101st airborne.

If ye are interested, Sabaton has a also a separated documentary KZbin Channel called Sabaton History Channel. There they speak more in depth about their historical subjects, showing genuine video and photo footage about them. For example this one: ye can see with your own eyes how life-threatinly flimsy The Polikarpov U2 was, since it was made out plywood and canvas. Even handgun bullets were sufficient enought to plummet it down. Those girls were not just bad, but outright CRAZY ASSES!!!

React to smoking snakes, Historic Fact about the song smoking snakes In 1945 in Montese, Italy, a bloody battle ensued between Brazilian troops and the Germans. Three Brazilian soldiers, Arlindo Lúcio da Silva, Geraldo Baeta da Cruz and Geraldo Rodrigues de Souza, bravely fought against a much larger and much stronger force of German troops. They fought until they ran out of ammunition and engaged in close combat with their bayonets. They were immediately shot dead and the Germans buried them and placed a cross with the inscription “Drei Brasilianischen Helden” (Three Brazilian Heroes) on their grave.

Lol how u guys discussed what song was best, i have about 20 songs that is my best Sabaton song. As a Swede im so proud of all these metal bands we have produced , being a small country and all, no doubt in my mind we are producing the most metal bands counting against the amount of people we have, but this is beside the point. Sabatons video’s should be shown on every school worldwide during history lessons, I know in fact some history teachers do. Maybe the generation to come will learn there always be humans brave enough to fight for freedom but most importantly that war really is horror and that conflicts allways should be solved through talking and most importantly listening to one another! 🕊️✌️

Who are the Night Witches? They are badass ladies in bomber planes. The soviets had 2 other squadrons made up of women. The women of the 588th was were the less experienced and educated women were placed because they didn't have the education or ability to fly fighter planes. The woman that formed the female squadrons was openly berating Stalin for being essentially an idiot during a time when high level male generals were cowering at Stalin's feet afraid to speak out about even a hair. You guys should look into 1916, Price of a Mile (the cost in young mens lives for just 6 miles of ground), Winged Hussars (a real event reenacted in the LORT movie at the battle of Helm's Deep), The Last Battle (Germans, French and US fought together in the dying days of WWII), 40-1, Uprising, Resist and Bite, Fields of Verdun, Soldier of Heaven. Too many amazing ones to name them all.

Some suggestion for the next reaction... "Race to the sea" is probably my favourite track from the last album, "Resist and bite" is another song that i really liked when it came out. Now some other group: "Norwegian regaeton" by Nanowar of steel or "Pasadena 1994" featuring Sabaton's lead singer, Joakim Broden. Then there is " No more Hollywood ending" by Battle Beast and last but not least, "Blind and frozen" by Beast in Black

The Night Witches were formed by the Soviet female aviator Marina Raskova, who was known as the "Russian Amelia Earhart" She set aviation records in the 1930's, and won the Hero of The Soviet Union medal. Josef Stalin admired her, and when she petitioned him to form an all female aviation unit, he issued order #0099 to make it happen. Raskova had been receiving letters from female aviators all over Russia. She selected 1200 candidates for training, and three units were formed, the 586th Fighter Aviation Regiment, the 587th Daytime Bomber Regiment, and the 588 Nightime Bomber Regiment. The 588th were the Night Witches, and remained 100% female throughout the war. They performed "harassment" missions, and were feared and highly respected by the Germans. In fact, Hitler awarded anyone who could shoot down a Night Witch with the Iron Cross. The Germans gave them the name "Night Witches", and the women embraced it. Extremely brave women. They were a real terror to the Germans on the Eastern Front.

Aaaah great. I absolutey love these historical stories. I just wish Hollywood would get off their high horse for once (& keep losing money) and start making great movies again for the world. If you really want to make an inspiring tale about incredibly brave & strong girls and women. Why not pick this one ? apparently, before certain recent events soured things, the uk and Russia were collaborating to make a movie about the Night Witches, unfortunately, they couldn't get any headway in the states, because " Americans would never believe a bunch of Russian girls" cause so much grief to Germany

Especially when you hear their struggle to those positions and it was real shame that they couldn't take part to their victory celebration because their planes were too "slow"! Sabaton rocks and brings awesome music to history especially battle history. The one they do about the German Battleship Bismarck and is one you might want to check out. Also the live version of "The Last Stand" is one you wanna watch. Not sure if you've seen or heard the drummer of Sabaton is married to Floor Jensen of Nightwish.
