To help out, Sabaton has a history channel and an episode that covers every song. So if any song topic you want to learn more about, check out its Sabaton History ep. They do play bits of the song through the history, so if you want to be blind to the song, I suppose either song-history or watch muted and read subtitles. As for interesting songs/stories it'd say try Smoking Snakes. About Brazil in WW2

I would definitely recommend the Sabaton song Inmate 4859. It’s about Witold Pilecki, a Polish officer who volunteered to go to Auschwitz, set up sabotage cells, escaped, wrote the first report of what was going on there (it was ignored), fought in the Warsaw Uprising, and then executed by the Communists as part of the Polish resistance to them. It should be a movie. There is a great book about him called The Volunteer.

Hey History Buff! I would recommend reacting to two songs: Defense of Moscow and Final Solution. As for Night Witches, this story is now truly history, as the last Night Witch was laid to rest in 2017. May these women, and their story, never be forgotten. #MayThe588thLiveForever Edit: In case you were wondering, the reason that the Commissar (equivalent to a regimental colonel) went out looking for her "lost girls" was because of Soviet military protocols, which stated that due to the unknown status of those who were MIA, the Soviet Union could not be sure if they had died, deserted, or had defected. Therefore, any personnel declared MIA would not receive the medals and awards due them for military service. So the Commissar made sure that her girls got the post-humous awards they deserved, creating an immaculate record, and in the process, telling the story of the final fates of her girls -- of which none survived, due to not having parachutes until 1944, and the planes being made of wood and cloth.

The story of Lilya Litvyak and the 586th Fighter Regiment is also worth looking at! As is the 587th Day-bomber Regiment. Yes. the Po-2's (also known as U-2's!) were slow but they were in production from 1928 to 1959 with ~30,000 produced! The Germans even copied the Soviets by putting training Arado 76 aircraft into Night "Nuisance" Regiments. In total, 261 people served in the 586th regiment, of whom 32 died of various causes during the war including plane crashes, combat deaths and tuberculosis. Twenty-eight aircraft were written off. In total the regiment collectively accumulated 28,676 flight hours, dropped over 3,000 tons of bombs and over 26,000 incendiary shells, damaging or completely destroying 17 river crossings, nine railways, two railway stations, 26 warehouses, 12 fuel depots, 176 armored cars, 86 firing points, and 11 searchlights. In addition to bombings, the unit performed 155 supply drops of food and ammunition to Soviet forces.

What i do love about Sabaton, they are really living the history. I am a history geek myself, excited about them. They romanticizing the heroism, the feel of the battle, the patriotism. And yes they are colaborating with historian KZbinrs, like this song and "No Bullets Fly" they colaborating with Yarn Hub for the animation and some history information (i do recommend you to react to "No Bullets Fly" next, for chronological order of they collaboration with Yarn Hub). They also sing about the late Middle Ages, like "The Last Stand". Yes they are Swedish, so many Swedish history song that they made, even they write the song about 500th aniversary of Swedish Royal Army in their song "Livgardet" for some context to listen "Livgardet", turn on your subtitle, cz it's in Swedish. So glad, to see historian geek like me reacting to Sabaton.

Great reaction of the historian to the historical events based song. Hope, you will find interesting the Sabaton's "Attack of dead men" about the Osowiets fortress defenders, which could withstand against the chlorine attack. And it was closer to your favorite medieval times: the First WW. Then I may recommend to watch the RadioTapok's Russian cover on it: it is accompanied the episodes from similarly named short movie, and this combination tickles the nerves much stronger.

The other one that's only 3 minutes long is just the music video. This one has information before and after the music video. Sabaton is a Swedish band. =) I remember an interview of one of the surviving Night Witches and she said that if you dug a finger into the plane, the cloth would rip. It was that flimsy. She was proud of the title Night Witch. She also spoke fondly of a girl who survived seven flights out. Their commander went to find the girls remains, mainly cause they were called traitors until she found proof of their passing.

The album where this song is from (Heroes, 2014) is probably my favourite one from Sabaton. The point you make in the end about romanticism is definitely the greatest strength about Sabaton. They know how and what to be romantic about when it comes historical events that were not always not black and white. A recurring theme is always "we remember you", seen in this song in the line "tell their story". It makes you able to see the greatness and humanity of all sorts of events and make you consider the things people were going through even if it was a war you might not have much of a connection with. Some songs I would request is "Hearts of Iron" about the German 12th army trying to evacuate Berlin at the end of the war, "Smoking Snakes (legendado edition)" about the (underrated, both as a song and a story,) Brazilian forces in WWII, or "the Lost Battalion" or "Screaming Eagles" or any of the other Sabaton songs about US military history with a cool dose of US patriotism that would be hard for an actual American band to pull off just due to the perceived bias, but Sabaton does it well.

Hey Jonas, If you haven't already, check out my video about Carlous Rex. I was very disturbed to find out that many view Sabaton as "Neo-nazi" because they romanticize war and are patriotic about their country. Everything that Sabaton does is EPIC and if you ever get a chance to see them LIVE, take it it will be an experience you will never forget. A story here that should be taught in history classes and yet like these women tossed aside and forgotten but not by Sabaton. Hey if you are a child of the 80's and love power metal why not check out the all female Japanese Power metal band Lovebites. They have taken all the glory of 80's metal (Metallica, Judas Priest, Helloween, Black Sabbath, etc...) and elevated to a whole new level. Power, Speed, Thrash, Rock, Ballads and even classical piano (yes classical piano) is stunning with this group of insanely talented women. They look like petite models going to a fashion show, but let them strap on high heels (which they play in) and white dresses so they can be seen on stage (all of them are between 4' 9" - 5' 2") and they will blow you away. LIVE is the true way to appreciate the talents so try Holy War LIVE (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJikqaN7paqWpNE) and while I love Sabaton especially for their songs, if you love guitars then the double lead of Midori and Miyako will knock you out, one the very best playing duos especially LIVE, no one battles, riffs, harmonizes or trades off lead like these two women and at speeds that are insane. Give them a listen as all their songs are in English (Asami their vocalist does have an accent that takes some getting used to but her vocals are amazing) and the backbone of Miho/bass and Haruna/drums are so insane as they drive the band from start to finish.

They had no parachutes, and only a hand pistol for protection, it was thought that if they were hit, they would just glide to the ground. There are stories of the women, going onto properties and stealing wooden posts and fencing to create landing and taking off points, since the planes were so light and small they could take off from pretty much anywhere, there were reports of the women bring arrested for stealing posts. yes they all sing the lead singer is Scandinavian and the band is from Sweden. Side note, many women would have to Donkey kick the bombs out the back, of the plane, since the planes were so rickety and couldn't support the equipment usually used to mechanically drop the bombs on the targetes.

I never knew of the Night Witches until I got the chance to visit the Russian Air Museum at Monino, outside Moscow, in 1993. In one of the buildings had a pair of Po-2 in the 588th colors. That was amazing. Having discovered Sabaton about 2 years back when I came accross "When the Winged Hussars arrived." as it was about Sobieski's rescue and lifting the Siege of Vienna, September 11, 1683, routing the Muslim invasion of Europe (The real reason they chose 9/11/2001 to attack us...because of that black mark on Muslim history) I then got into "Last Battle", "Bismark", "Blood of Bannockburn"....and then found this...which rekindled my memories of the monument in Monino. This was the first shirt of theirs I bought as well. I since have gotten "Soldier of Heaven" & "Great War" shirts. I even bought their boardgame...being the guys are gamers...but beyond starting to read the rules...it is in a box to move. I am looking for the thing because they asked me for a review. (I feel bad I have not gotten to it.) Welcome to the family...my friend.

@History Buff I completely agree with your reasoning on the whole "80's soul" of power metal, I may have been born in 90 but i knew nothing other than Ratt, ACDC, Def Leopard, Poison, Iron Maiden, etc growing up (along with 70s/80s/90s country). As for Sabaton they are hands down my favorite band, and any song they do is worthy of a listen. Granted some are better than others (I'm looking at you Shotgun lol), but not a single one of them is bad. The fact that they keep these stories alive through song is just mind blowing. It gives them (the stories) a sort of immortality. After all just how many people are actually remembered throughout the millennia? Not many, but names like Caesar, Agamemnon, Alexander, and Leonidas etc are, in part because their deeds were recorded, and have achieved a form of immorality through this. Edit: Sorry for the rambling and you earned a new Sub.

I imagine they have a very realistic and well-rounded understanding of warfare in both the good and the bad and express each accordingly. I have an extreme fascination of historiography and the way people remember and re-tell history. Everyone is so incredibly sensitive nowadays and it's good to see the glorious, the ugly and everything in-between presented in such a cool way!

Sabaton is a swedish band that writes and sings about Actual historic events, battles, moments of heroism and wars. They are currently recording their 10th studio album. Nice thing about them is that their video's never blocked so it's KZbin safe. (except for some Wacken video's that gets blocked by Wacken) If you really want to go down the Sabaton rabbit-hole, I would recommend these: (These are all from the Sabaton Channel, and they never block videos so it's safe to use) [live at Woodstock 2012]: 40:1 and Uprising [Great Tour Live Videos]: En Livstied I Krieg (make sure to turn subtitles on), Red Baron, Swedish Pagans, Primo Victoria, Fields of Verdun, Devil Dogs & Angels Calling [Lyric videos]: Attack of the dead men, In Flanders Fields, 82nd All the way, Sparta, Shiroyama and The lost betallion [Music Video's]: Bismarck, Livgardet (make sure to turn subtitles on), Fields of Verdun, Rourke's Drift, Screaming Eagles, Uprising & Seven Pillars of wisdom [Animated History Video's]: No Bullets Fly (not animated music video's, the animated history/story video's) [Covers]: Kingdom Come - Deliverance and I'm sure people told you but in case, Sabaton have another channel (Sabaton History Channel) where they do a deep dive into the history behind the songs with Indy Nidell. Then they have the Metal celebration trilogy: Metal Machine (lyrics made up of out of song names) kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6e1i6ukbMpmnsU Metal Crüe (lyrics made up out of band names) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJOuqJmipcd2j80 Metal Ripper (lyrics made up out of song lyrics) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIKxh6WXgtmBm9U

Since you're a history buff I'd say you should do double reactions, first the Sabaton history channel video about the song, and then the music video. You can start these reactions with a disclaimer that the music starts after a short history lesson covering the lyrics of the song and your take on those and if the viewer is only interested in your music reaction they can jump ahead to a specific time stamp... There are many music reactors on KZbin. But that's not the case with genuine history buffs that also love power metal, and that will therefore give both equal weight... BTW: For a super awesome live performance watch "En Livstid I Krig" (A Lifetime At War), live in Gothenburg. Switch on captions as it is in Swedish...

I like this video very much. One inaccuracy: The Night Witches could not dodge away from German fighters in daytime. The German could open fire from a hundred yards are more where if the 'woman turned tightly, the German only had to shift his plane a little bit to keep it in his sights. The only exception was if there was cover at ground level where the lower speed could be used to evade the Germans. In one of my favorite incidents, one of the best woman pilots of the 588th was called for a special mission. A Big Shot needed to be flown away from the front in a hurry, so they figured that one of the Night Witches had the best chance of slipping out of German fighter range in daytime. Well, she was caught by a BF-109. Without cover she would have been a sitting duck. The German could have dropped her from hundreds of yards away where she could make as tight turn as she wanted and from 200 yards away all the German would have to do to get them would be slightly shift his aim to follow her. However, (1) She was already flying very low. She spotted the German while he was still out of range. And (2) She was flying over a large Russian town, and (3) She was a badass Queen pilot. She dropped down to doorknob level , turned into a street perpendicular to the course of the German, so she was mainly shielded by the (single story!) buildings. The German had to circle around and come to where he could fly along the street she was in. But as soon as she saw him she made a 90-degree turn--which would not help up in the open, but she turned into another street at 90 degrees from the first one. The German fired at them as best he could, but her evasive maneuvers were so effective he only a second or so of firing from too far away. Plenty of bullets and cannon shells made near-misses. I don't know if they got any hits. But they were unwounded and the plane was fully operational when the German ran out of ammunition and had to leave. My favorite part of this is that the Big Shot, who had been arrogant and pushy, was a whimpering puddle who had to be helped out of the plane a the end. Not used to gunfire whistling past his ears, not to mention the insane flying of that Queen pilot. Giggle. As for making their final approach with engines off, that was a common method for nighttime attacks. It was especially effective for the Night Witches. More powerful aircraft were often detected by their loud engine noises even when far away. Our Witches, with their tiny engines, could get much much closer before cutting their engines. Then their open cockpits' very high visibility, and above all their very low speed, meant they could make exceptionally accurate approaches while gliding. In spite of their small numbers, they were able to mess with the morale of whole armies, who never knew when their camps would be attacked.

Here is something I googled about female pilots: "Amelia Earhart may have been the most well-known woman pilot of her time, but she was neither the first nor the last to achieve great heights in the world ..." Also, they are called aviatrices. :)

There were women pilots in WWII - they were the delivery pilots flying them from the factories in North America to Britain. In Canada the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) flew Hurricanes, Mosquitoes and Spitfires - which was described as "a real lady's aricraft!" to Britain. In the US, the WAFS accounted for 80% of all ferrying missions, delivering over 12,000 aircraft. They freed around 900 male pilots for combat duty.

Sabaton sings about Battles, Heroes, Famous last stand. They do have their own History Channel kzbin.info/door/aG4CBbZih6nLzD08bTBGfw Where a band member(Varies who it is) and a Historian Indy Neidell talks about their songs, what is the story behind, how they came up with the idea etc. you should really check that out. As Joakim (their Singer) have said, why would be sing about made up stories, when History are full of amazing events. And you are right, they are amazing live examples of this are "40:1 & Uprising" from Woodstock 2012 in Poland. They are big in Sweden, but HUGE in Poland. Sabaton uses some of the other members as backing Vocals, but its mainly Joakim that sings. One of my favorite songs are Attack of the Dead Men, from WW1, or inmate 4859 (a true Hero, that must be forgotten). There are as you said in the beginning two versions of this song, this one with the story telling before and after the song, the other one is just the song. The same goes for the Song, No Bullets fly.
