Great video! I lost my beautiful red hair to chemo after breast cancer. Everyone told me to dye it when it started growing back, telling me it would look awful if I didn’t. My response was “ no, I am so lucky to be alive, I will embrace whatever comes!” As it turns out, my hair came back a beautiful salt and pepper color and I love it. I get compliments all the time and am asked who colors my hair. I’m 70 now and encourage all who are hesitant to go gray. It will probably look great !

I'm so sorry to hear about your breast cancer, but I love your philosophy! Your hair sounds beautiful 😍

It's the same with long hair. "You can't have long hair over 40" used to be said. "Old" women can really rock long, grey hair!

Thank you for being such a fabulous inspiration, you are gorgeous! I started getting some gray hair in my 20s. Then I started coloring my hair with Manic Panic and such because I was goth. Then I started using permanent dyes. By the time I was in my 40s, my gray roots were so obvious as they grew out that I felt compelled to keep the coloring up. Then the pandemic happened, and I wondered, "What am I doing?" I ditched the dye, and it took years to grow out. It WAS THE BEST DECISION!My hair and scalp are healthy, and my hair grows fast again. My hair is gray and brown and very long. I love my hair, and I get compliments regularly. 🦄

I got my first grey hair at 27 years old. I certainly wasn’t old at that time. Just this week I told my hairdresser that I wanted to let my natural hair color grow out. She actually told me that she was excited to see the change! 😊

I’m so glad to hear that! I think stylist have been a little more open to helping women transition since the pandemic, which is awesome! Yeah, I got my first gray hair at 15 - I don’t think anybody would consider that old !

My last coloring was 6/26/24. I had an appointment yesterday and my stylist was very supportive! I had her trim my hair to a chin length bob. Our plan is for me to see her every 8 weeks now instead of every 4 to trim the inch of growth. She offered highlight alternatives too. So am going cold turkey. 😊 Thank you for your channel and your advice.

Good for you. I’m sure you will love it when it’s all grown out! I also did it cold turkey during the pandemic. I love my grey hair-mostly salt with some pepper. It is so much healthier than when I was dying it!

Good message and a reminder for those of us who have come to terms with it. I continued to dye my hair into my mid-50s for the reasons you stated, not even realizing how ingrained the lie was in my head. Now in my 60s I find myself questioning the lie that there is something wrong with looking old, that we should strive to look as young as we can for as long as we can. I follow a skin, hair and exercise routine like many people but now my goal is to look and feel good for my age as there is nothing wrong with being older.
@KatieGoesPlatinum4 ай бұрын
I’m glad you enjoyed it. I also didn’t realize how ingrained that lie was for me for a long time. If I could go back and talk to my younger self, I would convince myself to stop dyeing the second I got sick of doing so - and not keep doing it for another 10 to 20 years. I damaged my hair so severely!

@@KatieGoesPlatinum Same here, wish I'd done it much sooner. But better late than never and at least I can be an example for my children.

I agree with everything you said! I often look at older women’s hair -those who are still dying their hair- and think most of them would look better with gray hair. The dyed hair looks like caked on color and very unnatural. To each her own.

Great video Katie. Reframing this lie is so valuable and changes the perception of others as well. The more confidently we rock the less that lie can live on. I’m loving your new studio space and the lighting.

Thank you so much for this post. I was shocked to see it in my recommendations today but then realized that the algorithm would obviously know what I had been googling in the past few weeks and send me some inspiration. 🤣🤣 I've been "thinking" about letting my natural hair color grow out for years now and my brain always said that if I did that, then people would know how old I actually am. (As if I'm literally fooling them now?) I finally spoke to my stylist last week and she was excited. She showed me Pinterest photos and discussed a method for accomplishing it, how long it would take, how much it would cost and how great it would look all the way through. YAY! I've been challenging myself in the mirror since then and every time I look at myself I say, "Well hello grey roots! You're looking lovely today! I'm looking forward to seeing more of you!" That feels very weird to tell anybody but I know that reframing our beliefs is a very big deal and the beginning of all the beautiful changes that ever happen. xo karen

Great video. My face skin is youthful and I am not fearful of looking old due to having gray hair. The real issue may not be one you have encountered in others. My big fear is this - gray hair is a light color and I am afraid that it would give an outer appearance of being washed out and just another empty-headed person. I have always been brunette and never gave in to the bleached hair fashion trend because of my lifelong mindset. I admit this is my mind's problem to resolve somehow. In the meantime, I know your blog will give me much needed encouragement that can help me to achieve that. Thank you, Katie 💕

Hi, i understand where you're coming from. We all have our own issues that pop up when we decide to go gray. It's really kind of an emotional rollercoaster!

I started to get gray hair at fourteen, and started dying at twenty-one. I stopped dying my hair at thirty-seven, and now I'm nearly forty-three. My hair is so much thicker and healthier than when I was in my twenties! The single thing that made me brave enough to stop dying my hair was that I was starting a new career as a ballet teacher, and I remembered having so many beautiful, talented, brilliant ballet teachers with long silver hair in updos as I grew up, and I knew in my heart that I wanted to be like them!

I went grey and it looked fabulous. However it made me pale out too much in my skin tone and all makeup and tanning techniques failed to correct it. I looked wan and people got fearful, thinking my cancer had returned. Unfortunately it's not for me. I sit between Celtic and Norman ancestry which causes stark differences between skin melanin and hair melanin. I do not look aged, grey hair makes me look like a wraith. I dye my hair the exact colour of my original hair and immediately I look healthier in skin tone.

My worry is more about the yellowing that will probably happen. I have fine thin hair and can't stand hats.
@KatieGoesPlatinum4 ай бұрын
I understand. If you don’t like hats, though, you could always use a UV protectant like SEEN blowout cream plus a spray SPF (Coola Mist). If you use those two together, you should be OK in the sun without a hat.
@KatieGoesPlatinum4 ай бұрын
I’m sorry, but that’s not true. Purple shampoo and conditioner don’t prevent yellowing - they just cover it up.

My mother and two older sisters used to nag me endlessly, saying my gray hair made me look much older. One day, exasperated by the two sisters, I hit back with, " at least I have stayed slim!". I never presumed to tell them they had piled on too much weight, but I think they got the message 😂. I am now 71, hair so silvery white that women ask me whether I get it dyed (white?!). I think it flatters the complexion as much as pearls
@KatieGoesPlatinumАй бұрын
I can’t blame you for hitting back at them after the constant nagging - you’re only human after all! I’m glad they got the message to knock it off. And I totally agree with you about how flattering it is ❤️

I am seeing more women embracing their silver strands and are glad to be freed from the bondage of coloring their hair, both the time and expense to try and keep up with the gray roots. My husband is completely silver, with his hair and beard, he never did anything with color. He accepted that he would see his hair turn gray. I struggled with coloring mine for a good number of years, now I embrace it. My hair is elbow length and I still have about 4” at the ends that had been dyed blond, my husband trims my hair and I told him that he could just chop off the remaining, but he said it is ok, he will continue doing minimal trims until it grows out completely. I have him braid my hair for me, so I rock the French, Dutch, fishtail and variations of those. I get compliments on my hair, so gray hair and keeping it long is my choice. I have received a few rude comments that being my hair is gray, that I am too old for long hair and I need to cut it short. I tell them that my hairdresser thinks otherwise, and smile 😊.

He loves my hair long as much as I do. He washes it for me in the shower, and he gives me scalp massages in the process. I wash his back and he washes mine. And he lets me cut his hair. I had some minor errors the first couple times, but now In think I do an awesome job. I enjoy the bonding time. We are both retired and we love spending time together.
