Hashino is so Inspirational and grounded. When I finished Persona 5 I came to the conclusion that it was the best game I’ve ever played. I could enjoy listening to Hashino for hours telling us about the creation of the game. Sega & Atlus deserve credits as well. Other studios could’ve rushed the process or completely avoid the idea of the game. I can’t imagine a world without these beautiful games. You guys did an amazing job with this video. He mentions picaresque novels in the beginning. A definition: A picaresque narrative is usually written in first person as an autobiographical account. The main character is often of low character or social class. He or she gets by with wits and rarely deigns to hold a job. There is little or no plot. The story is told in a series of loosely connected adventures or episodes. There is little if any character development in the main character. Once a pícaro, always a pícaro. His or her circumstances may change but these rarely result in a change of heart. The pícaro's story is told with a plainness of language or realism. Satire is sometimes a prominent element. The behavior of a picaresque hero or heroine stops just short of criminality. Carefree or immoral rascality positions the picaresque hero as a sympathetic outsider, untouched by the false rules of society. It explains alot about the narrative style of Persona 5 that I didn’t really get. I can see that there are alot of modern and very popular films that apply to the description too. The appeal seems to be one that’s in all of us. Interesting that Persona 5 was also an exploration of the sides of good and evil that appeal to us. It seems like a logical progression. I believe he knows what is stylistically compelling in exploring an environment. Even if other reasons get you into some of the games he worked on, you come back to explore. It is interesting that the environments make you ask alot of questions about their details and that there are alot of complicated answers and alot left unanswered. Like life and exploration tend to be. One big appeal seems to be places that are very ‘lived in’. That is what’s compelling about urban exploration. there is alot of urbex (urban exploration) photography that does this. You can see some of it here in this video. places we don’t go or can’t go for one reason or another or that we are even afraid of but that have alot of story and background. He seems drawn to those places so he’s a good person to capture them. Make a vacation out of a series of those places with none of the complications and it’s a compelling visual journey you can set to almost anything. It explains why some of the better urban exploration games have you move through the environments from a certain perspective or at a certain pace. It’s interesting that many of the appeals of exploration seem to have sort of been borrowed by Resident Evil after they would have naturally assumed the ideas were borrowed from them. The places we want to explore. Very important in any medium.

Be a little bit careful though. P5 Royal sadly did not have him return with any role like he did for P4G or Catherine: Full Body as a producer. I wish someone at SquareEnix would pay particular attention to what he says from 6:55 to 8:30. What he says he does NOT do is exactly how SE designers have approached games for the last decade and a half. SE draws whimsical looking places and characters with lots of buckles and hair mouse, and tries to piecemeal a story around them. When audiences don't like a game, they assume it's because of ingredients (characters, linear story, open world, battle systems, etc.), and subsequent games have had swapped in ingredients with equal levels of empty experiences. I've tried to verbalize what has been so much better about games like Persona 3 and Persona 4 than anything SE has produced in recent years, but have always struggled. The placement of experience at the core is perfect. The experience can be about beating a hard boss, being welcomed home by Nanako, or whatever else a player finds on the journey that is comfortable.

At the end, Hashino says, "at the end of the day, he is half a tatami's size standing and a full tatami's size sleeping." What does this mean?
@ArchipelDocumentaries7 жыл бұрын
Tatami are still a common measurement size for housing in Japan - the proverb means that regardless of the size of the house, at the end of the day a person will still take the size of half a tatami when standing and one tatami when sleeping, meaning that we should remember to remain humble in our ambitions.
