You just witnessed a very common traditional way of learning any classical Indian music. This is the Guru-Shishya parampara. Whether it is Hindustani or Carnatic, this is the way to teach and learn ! You could imagine the gruelling and grinding learning that every musician goes through in their childhood. Rest is left you to imagine the mastery they achieve by this. Long live this tradition ! 🙏

I find our Indian classical music to be purely mathematical. The alankars include concepts of permutation combination, pattern matching and functions. It's really cool thinking about classical music in this aspect. It's very less memorization and mostly logical and mathematical. Absolutely love Indian classical music.❤️

You are very right. Usage of memory is limited to remembering the rules of raag only. All the rest of the rendition is creating, identifying and being able to follow a pattern out of your creative ability. And thats what Kaushiki Maam said in her interview here on OSR very beautifully - we dont have rehearsals but theres a lot of practice that goes on.

The instrument she is holding is the Tanpura, which is used both in Carnatic and Hindustani styles, although the make and style varies. Notice how her father says "Shruti", "Shruti" in between while she was doing alapana? He is indicating her to go in tune with the Shruti. Shruti means pitch or scale (I don't know the exact English translation, it's either one of the two). The Tanpura is used for Shruti. It just plays "sa". "pa". "sa". Can be adjusted to different scales or pitches. Your sound has to be in sync with the Shruti. When I vocalise any of the 7 swarams (notes) or the vowel sounds of the 7 swaras, say for eg., I say pa . . (Panchamam, 5th note in ascending), that note, how I vocalise it, should be in sync with the set Shruti. Also, another interesting fact is the seven notes in ascending order is similar to the seven chakras (six in the body and one above). This is why many go into a meditative state while hearing/ vocalising the swaras. Now, I'd love to explain to you about raagam/ raag / raga. But it'll take more time. Some other time may be. Hope you get what I said.
@razorrasu
@razorrasu 4 жыл бұрын
Well written. Shruti is probably best translated as pitch. Western music works on absolute pitch (specific frequency is C, D, etc. while Indian music works on relative pitch, whatever the Sa all other notes/intervals are relative to the Sa. So the drone instrument plays the first and fifth of the scale (Sa, PA) as a guide to the musician of the relative pitch the whole performance should be on. Also in the video the Guru in many places is asking Kaushiki to correct her Shruti (she is going out of pitch as she does the notes)

He's a wonderful human being but a very strict teacher. Classical music training requires discipline, hardwork and dedication. I suggest you listen to more of Pandit Ajay Chakraborty more. Korbin noticed an important aspect of the learning/training tradition in India that still survives in classical music training...the great oral tradition of the 'Gurukul' (literally the 'Guru's family'). In ancient India, children of privileged families seeking an education to ensure a bright future/career, had to leave the comforts of home and live in the Guru's humble abode (Aashram) as a member of his family for the duration of their academic training. Learning was usually accomplished through oral chanting (repeating the Guru's words over and over again). Training included rendering service to the Guru and every student whether prince or commoner was treated equally by the Guru. They had a universal dress code and distinctions were solely merit-based. Later, accomplished musicians refined this system and trained their disciples/offspring in a very similar manner, giving rise to the musical 'Gharana' (literally 'homestead') tradition.

A lot of people used to come to Ajoy Chakroborty to learn singing. Kaushiki once said that he was so nice and patient with every other stuednt but extremely strict and rude with her whenever she'd make a mistake. And now I see Kaushiki performing with her son and it makes me so happy to see the family tradition remains intact.

Guru is the one who enlightens the path on which one is walking. As knowledge is the only light that can dispel the darkness of not knowing anything. The word is a combination of the words Gu which means Darkness and Ru which means one who dispels or removes the darkness. A guru is different than a teacher or a coach. He is more like a parent and /or mentor. A Shishya is someone who is on a path of knowledge and needs someone to dispel the lack of knowledge. The shishya could be one any path, spiritual, or otherwise.

The instrument is called Tanpura, where the tonic and the dominant note is constantly played (1+5), so that the scale keeps coming in your ears....if the scale has a powerful sub dominant note, than tonic and sub dominant (1+4), is played in place of dominant....

These complicated combinations are more of pattern recognition exercises than things to memorize. And these must be learnt well because these help later in creating patterns instantly while singing a raag onstage, as well as develop crystal clear idea of positioning of different notes, so that you can hit a note whenever you want without even thinking. Leave alone the vocal workouts and breath control techniques these teach you ;)

Fun fact: its like 80% of the Bengali families. You would always find parents pushing their children to train on singing, dancing or writing literature. That's an integral part of the Bengali culture. Btw, watch the brilliant web series Bandish Bandits. That would answer many of your queries around the legacy of Indian classical music.
