Kawasaki 750cc from Thailand, beautiful sound , but for me most important a simple technique with its direct pulses which shows that it is not impossible to look for alternative ways to use a 2 stroke engine. Unprecedented high rpm for large two-stroke twin-cylinder with only one exhaustpipe and without a baffle cone and tailpipe.
Here's why this choice, and how does it works?
The only way such a system can work is really simple. First it should be a twin cylinder engine and should have a crankshaft with pins at 180° and an exhaust timing of about 183°. The output pulse from cylinder A will be the reverse pulse for cylinder B. Therefore, the exhaustpipe don't need to produce a reverse pulse so only needs a suction effect. An additional reverse pulse as normally occurring would only disturb its operation, so no baffle and no tailpipe at all. The big advantage is that with a timing of about 183°, the pulse travels over a very short distance and will be almost 100% in time over a very wide rpm range, so not too early at low speeds and not too late at much higher rpm. Because there is no gearbox that wide powerband is absolute necessary. The downside is the huge amount of noise. But for the sound you can still do something in your ears and at some distance it sounds like music.
Jetski's and snowbikes
I know there are also big twins with one full exhaustpipe, so with normal reversepuls from the baffle. In that case the exhaust timing should be no more than 180° and the outgoing pulse of A meets a closed B exhaustport and comes later reflected by the baffle in the normal way back, just before B exhaust gets open. The cyclus of A and B comes after each other. In this way no advantage of high rpms and no wide powerband as the Thais twostrokes have. This is often used in jetski engines, because of the little room for pipes. This is a problem for many big twostrokes, they almost never had the room for pipes that would be the best for max. power. So that is why, almost always a compromise is made.
Conclusion
For maximum power two full exhaustpipes with better timing than 183° remains better, but not on such a wide speed range as this Thais system.
And again an evidence that the exhaustpipe is most reponsible for the right speed range and if you might be able to change this in a correct way than you see here what the exiting result can be !
