Kayak DIY Electric Bilge Pump

This was a bit of work and a bit of cash here is a parts list there are other ways of doing this so if you are going to use this only use it as a guide. Also, please forgive me when repeating myself a few times it took almost two months to complete this waiting on stuff.

Absolutely awesome build. It was a long video but you've done well. The last pump I fitted I paid $80 for a prebuilt reed switch box. Presumably using a relay and a small reed switch. I wanted to try make my own for my other kayak though. This video has answered every question and given me better ideas. Thank you.

Thanks very much I know it would go long but I wanted to give as much info as I could and I could never find a good video on going it and the ones I did see made it look like $50 and and hour or 2 and you are good to go and that really is not true. I did one on how long it would run too because people kept saying is was not worth having because the batteries do not last, well they do and what really surised me was how much water it would pump I had the hose on full blast and was worried it would not keep up with the pump. I watched that video also, and was equally impressed how long it lasted. I have since placed my orders for all the bits and will behind construction when it all arrives. Will need to go watch some of your firearm videos too, you guys in the US are lucky, restrictions here in Australia are crazy. For example, We’re not allowed any semi auto rifles.

Thanks for making this video, there are lots of demos and small summaries out there but not many full walk-throughs. I'm in the process of gathering parts right now for a similar build and I have a question. Is there a particular reason that you went with 14.8v batteries? The rule 500 is a 12v pump and there are lots of appealing options in 12v batteries, will they perform the same?

If I remember correctly, it came down to the size of the battery cell, and wanted to keep it as small as I could. The cell voltage is 3.7v. with 4 cells per pack. I Have two packs in parallel so if one would fail the other would still work just a bit slower and not as long. I would not use the same connectors at the battery, there are others out there that are easier to find and cheaper.

Great boat, great install job, and a great video. One thing I will add, is I have found from experience that single pump is NOT adequate if you are in three foot or higher waves with a boat of water trying to put on a skirt. There always seems to be a wave that comes over the side, eliminating any progress in bailing. I am in the process of sourcing parts for a second 500GPH pump, your list will help me greatly...thanks.

Saskatchewan Adventure thanks very much for the comment. I think in 3 plus seas you will be hard press to pump it. Getting your skirt on is top of list even if hand pumping you can pull the edge open and slide it in. If you check Rule does make a 1100gph pump and I believe it is in the same package. Your amps will bump up so you may have to go with a relay to switch the pump on and off. In this case you could use a simpler magnetic switch. Do not use the Trax connectors they work great but hard to source there are may good alternatives on Amazon and cheaper. The cable glad were the biggest head ache but both are high quality. I ordered the Morris off Amazon and had to wait 3 weeks for them to come back in stock. Once I got them one had the washers and jam but the other did not. I ordered a replacement and it arrived with out both too. I ended up calling Morris and spoke with one of their tech people he said they should have been included so he put two washers and lock nuts in an envelope and sent them to me free of charge, what a great company. I did consider the higher pump, but I think I like the idea of a fallback pump if the first one calves for some reason. Thanks again for the additional info.

excellent work. I would be interested to know how long the pump would run until the batteries are completely exhausted. could you fill it continuously with a garden hose and time it? I'm asking because I need a very small pelican case for space issues. But at any rate, really perfection.

How long do you think the full run time would be?

I have not tried to run it down and to do it correctly I would have to run it and drain the boat, let it cool and repeat till the battery was dead. But just from running it a few times, I would say between 15 and 30 mins under load.
