WHAT !!?? I am 65 years old and fished offshore my whole life in South Carolina, and have fished the Bahamas, and the S Pacific from Tahiti to Tonga to Fiji and to kill a fish that majestic for $3 a pound is a criminal act. I have witnessed the degradation of so many fisheries first hand in my lifetime and that shit is out of control. Get your money chartering and release those beautiful monsters to breed for the health of the Bluefin population. This is inexcusable. Sorry but that is the TRUTH....

It is not the truth, it is your opinion. Your opinion is worth as much to me as mine is to you. The northern hemisphere tuna fishery is expanding. I live in the UK and our trawlers are seeing schools the likes of which haven't been seen in two generations. For the first time in five decades tuna is a landable by-catch so long as it was not a targeted species. The European scientific bodies who feed information to government agencies are suggesting it will be a suatainably fishable species within a very short timescale subject to strict quotas. Heck an inshore British fisherman in a 16 foot boat caught and released two blues in a day. As a youth joining our trawling industry 35 years ago the Irish tuna fishery was a legend told by 'the old boys'...now we have charters from a considerable number of ports offering tuna with a high success rate. Damning the hard work of fishermen and scientists who revived a population from the brink to sustainability in a lifetime is just plain wrong. It has been proven time and time again in aquatic and terrestrial conservation that if you remove the economic value of a species the impetus for conservation declines, fishermen (as opposed to anglers) and their governing bodies and guardian bodies are not going to fund research if you make them an unfishable species. That is my opinion, backed by research and direct observations made personally whilst at sea.

My first time fishing with my dad for bluefin, we fished on a charter for a full day spend lots of money and didn't even get one bite, when the Capt. said 'Reel em in" my dad yanked his poll as if to pretend he got a hit and what do you know the line started screaming louder than I ever heard it. We followed it with the boat for a while and the Capt. said it is most likely a shark and we should cut the line. My father was not trying to here it. We sat the Capt. down and told him to keep quiet and no matter what the fish is at least we would be about to say we caught something other than bait. After about an hour and a half you can finally see the Bluefin Tuna foul hooked at the middle of his sharp hard boney tail. Everyone thought that catching and landing this fish would be a miracle but little did they know me and my dad and the other 4 guys that we invited on this trip caught bluefins in the canyons with our regular 27foot SportCraft Cuddy with twin Yamahas 250s,

Mikes old spot behind Lenny's Clam bar. My dads on his 10th boat since 1985 and our Luhrs has twin diesels so we no longer charter a boat to go offshore (about 90 miles usually). We have to go through Jamaica bay and under the marine parkway bridge to get to sheepshead bay and then go around breezy point across from Verrazano Bridge and passed Ambrose channel where all the Tankers and Shipping boats stop before being aloud into the Verrazano bridge passed the yellow bouy where the gambling boats go from Brooklyn. We fished all over even went on a charter for Halibut in Alaska and did the 3 day Tile fish trip on the Viking Star Fleet from Montauk. If you don't believe me we have the whole fight recorded but I forgot the name of the charter boat we were on which is weird because we use to use that same capt. for most offshore trips before we got our Luhrs. Back in 1973 I was invited on a commercial boat we most likely fished in the same deep canyons as you, the Captain used rope in a basket not rods I thought it was a joke at first maybe being teased. So I baited with dead Mackerel I think the weight was 30 oz of lead with a plastic bottle tied about 20 ft from the bait maybe more. I had just let a new bait over then tied a 20 lb mono line to the and attached to a rail this served as a quick snap to wake you up and that a fish was on, after several hours we harpooned this giant and after getting in the boat I measured it as about 10 ft. WE took it to most likely the same fish market the weight was 896 lbs then t they cut off the head and tail the weight was 700 lbs even after the block and tackle weight of 5 lbs. They quickly iced the meat packed in a crate and it was on it's way to Logan airport and shipped to Japan, the price was $ 2.35 a lb $ 1,645 total price I thought the price today would be much higher. The day we went out there was like 70 boats fishing including the religious group the " Moonies ". Thanks for such a great video, at 83 it brought back such memories.

Seem criminal to take such a mature fish. Sad
@holyfox943 ай бұрын
On the contrary. Better than non mature fish. Besides, where do you think the tuna for your sushi comes from? Unfortunately not from small boats like this, but from fleets who fish the oceans empty. With nets which damage the sea floor and tons of other species who die for nothing.
@paveldimov89713 ай бұрын
No it's not. Take the young instead and let this one just dye on it's own? This size of boats/ fishers treat the environment was better than the big fishing ships..

@jokervienna64333 ай бұрын
Agree. It could go on to spawn and make many more Bluefins. All is not bad though, the Bluefin has returned to England and Scandinavia - likely by NOT killing so many of these magnificient fish. I´ve talked to old fishermen and their relatives in southern Sweden, and it was not uncommon to catch Bluefins at around 1400 lb "back in the old days". With responsible fishing, that could happen again.

I bet you golf a lot... certainly not a fisherman and certainly not for big fish like this. While I understand how it might look insensitive of gruesome but that's a perfect shot. It is nowhere near anything normally consumed as opposed to gaffing a fish in the meat and having the blood spoil an area- one of the top priorities for landing commercially valuable fish. It is also a soft spot amongst hard gill plates and head/jaw where the gaff can easily stick and stay, and it is a natural hole thru the skeletal structure so there is plenty of holding power. The final benefit is that occasionally it ends up with the gaff hitting the brainstem or spine, and when a fish gets spined like that it immediately ends it. The idea is like unintentional Ike Jime and the immediate termination of signals in the spine has huge positive effects on lactic acid and other internal chemistry issues as well as those regarding the effects of a fish's muscles to spasm or it to slam around on the deck. So it may not be pretty, thats decent gaff placement

On top of that these giant tuna reproduce orders of magnitude more than smaller tuna. They're also removing the genes that make "large tuna" so by catching it they're reducing the chances that our grandchildren will catch something as big. It should be illegal to keep tuna above a certain size.

We are a part of the same food chain the fish is. The tuna has lived an entire life of eating smaller fish. Did it care? No. And then, we eat it. That's what happens with nature. It's literally nature.

Caught lots of blue and black marlin. I know that lots of people manhandle the line like you guys were. I always felt that we set up the drags on reels to a specific % of the rating of the line and so we faught the fish with the reel and of course the boat. Granted, the reels are set with the theory that a large belly of line and water resistance may be out there during the initial run(s). Is that why you feel that it is safe to put more pressure when close to the boat?
