this video is probably my favorite matt carriker video ever. It feels like the best version of offtheranch/demoranch/vetranch all in one! matt educated us a little on some basic things like life in water, what probably wont kill a bear but will indeed look cool on the hip, duck diets and animal friendship, asked us about some shady plants for further educational stuff in the comments, making fires with magnesium strips, we have patrick the duck, and the sickest part of the resort weve never seen!! those rocky faces like DAMN thats an awesome spot for a camping trail. Matt, hike-out campsites out there would be epic. Spread out, private, trails only accessable to the folks renting the sites, what a sick spot out there. I honestly could even see lighting out there under some of those rocky faces, like as an optional thing for campers who want to walk down that rock wall at night with some interesting occasional lighting illuminating the surface from below every like 50 feet.

For using the firesteel, Use the scraper to scrape off shavings onto your kindling/super small stuff, moss whatever. Then you spark it like in the video to catch the metal shavings on fire which then sets off your fire.

This. Fluffy fire starters are best too. Some cotton balls and some KY jelly smashed together in a ziplock bag are great. Waterproof. Rip apart the cotton and KY balls when ready to expose some of the fibers and it will burn for a few minutes making it easy to start a fire.

When you use firesteel, what you're doing is using a hard piece of steel to scrape metal shavings off a soft piece of steel, such that they land in your fuel and transfer energy into it. But while these shavings start out red-hot, they have little mass, so they lose their heat very quickly. Therefore, the closer to the material you strike, the less energy gets wasted into the air. Also, the more pressure you apply, the more material you will scrape off, which means the sparks have more mass, which means they will transfer more energy into the fuel. And you want your tinder to be as fibrous and fluffy as you can - that stuff you showed isn't nearly fine enough. You need to pulverize and wad it up into something that looks more like a bird's nest or cotton ball. It's not easy to start a fire this way, especially if you don't know what you're doing.

A lotta tips: That inflatable sleeping pad you have is a higher end one, but it looked a little underinflated. That's mostly up to preference, but generally the more air you have in it, the better. Many sleeping bag ratings are comfort ratings if I'm remembering right. Generally though it's better to go low than high on that. Women's bags are rated different from men's bags. Starting a fire from sparks needs very flammable tinder. Usually, people bring their own for this (vasaline'd cotton balls) since it's harder to do in regular conditions let alone wet seasons. Cotton kills when wet and cold. Synthetics and wool are your friend. It's best to put things inside your pack when hiking instead of strapping them to the outside since that's less stuff swinging around on your center of gravity. Not a big fan of going ultralight, but they have the right of it: You will need more specialized backpacking equipment if you wanna go deep into the ranch resort simply because it takes less energy to carry it. I'd get a real filter bottle from a big name rather than a freebie, but maybe that's just brand hesitance speaking. Campers do eat a lot of freeze dried food as well since it's lighter and has a good calorie to weight ratio. You did great though for a first timer in this kind of camping. I'm just talking from years of Scouting.

@bong-o-boy7105 that's old school. Those were made with super cheap ferrocerium rods that don't have super hot sparks. Also the magnesium was cheaper which does actually work better in most instances than the more expensive magnesium. Nowadays you just buy a big beefy high quality ferro rod and you're good to go.
@_DlME
@_DlME 9 ай бұрын
Also with ferro rods if you hold the striker stationary right against your tinder and pull the ferro rod against it (towards yourself). Not the other way around. It keeps all the sparks in a more concentrated area.

From what I could understand when he introduced himself in the video, the duck said his name was Fred. Poeple call him Freddie, but he prefers Fred. Fred is a lone duck. He enjoys swimming in the river, fishing, and he hates goats. He's very happy that you bought the ranch and looks forward to meeting everybody when you open the ranch. He really enjoyed the Mango, and yeah, he likes you...

Hey Matt. I was watching this video and the river area that you were sleeping in and as a rockhounder I got so excited and wished that I could be there to look at rocks. Maybe you need to consider having a rockhounder weekend for those of us who would be self entertained, trying to find some great rocks. We would love it.

Man, such a pretty place! More of these exploration/ camping videos would be great! Also, Patrick is a fine name for a duck. Either that, or Howard. That duck is awfully tame though, since you said he was alone perhaps he was someone's pet at some point? Whatever his story is, he is an a cute mallard I believe, and he should be protected because people are cruel and I've seen too many ducks with arrows and whatnot stuck in them just because they aren't afraid of people enough to fly away.

Matt you gotta get the layers off if you want to be warm in a sleeping bag. They use your body heat to warm up the air inside the bag, so if you’re wrapped up it never gets warm enough and you freeze.

I dont think he actually slept in the tent. The kayak that he said he got early in the AM while the fire was getting going better was frozen to the grass like it sat there all night. I wonder if he hiked up and got it down there that night before he went home!! LOL Usually they show us a little in the sleeping bag goodnight footage when they go to sleep in a tent! LOL maybe he did though, the kayak thing just made me scratch my bald head...haha

With the fire starter, you have to get all up close, hold the scraper still and "draw" the rod back towards you. Really dry grass and stuff for a starter works good. Scrape off some of the magnesium on the rod, onto the starter, before uou start throwing sparks.

Yes the duck is a male mallard. and when it comes to using the fire starter. it works best if you scrape off a small pile of the magnesium. (the gray metal). Then hit the pile of magnesium with the sparks. Good Luck!!!

You really need to name the duck Lupe, which means "from the river of the wolf". The animal that person saw could have been a black wolf not a bear. LOL! You need to get Donut, baddie and Brandon to go camping and to look for the bear/wolf you could call it beauwolf. Love these videos. They make me want to go camping but it is currently 10 degrees and we just got 3 inches of new snow today.
