*Whoopsie!!!* Re: "Borsigiana" -- Several errors. The photo used over your description of 'borsie' is not a borsie. As you said, borsie is a climber, but the photo shows a plant with rather tight nodes, so I'd say it is just a young "regular" M.d.
@johnjhill3
@johnjhill3 5 жыл бұрын
MORE IMPORTANTLY, at least with botanists (which we all consider ourselves) -- Borsigiana is Absolutely "the same" as Monstera deliciosa. It is a variant with a different growth habit but genetically 99.99% identical to 'regular' M.d. The official names are (A) Monstera deliciosa [including all cultivars] and (B) Monstera deliciosa "Borsigiana" Unfortunately, there is no specifying name for "Not Borsigiana" and that makes things muddy for hobbyists who want, ummmm, that type.

@@Olivia_Guest ...I don't think it's that much of a separation from the Type specimen. More like a variety. Consider green beans, Phaseolus vulgaris. There are bush varieties and pole varieties, all still under the same species description.

I currently own a Deliciosa and an Adonsonii with hopes of getting more varieties (hopefully a Thai constellation) in the near future. One thing I will say I like the most about Adonsonii that many ppl dont discuss is the leaves have an almost reflective quality under directed spot light. If you have one use the light on your phone to shine over the leaves and watch how the reflective sheen lights up. So beautiful.

Acuminata is hemiepiphytic, hence it grows long aerial roots. It starts its life as an epiphyte on a tree and then grows aerial roots, which reach all the way down to the ground. Even juvenile cuttings start growing quite long aerial roots, which makes it easier to distinguish it from Adansonii. My small cutting already has several 15-20cm long aerial roots just dangling down without any moss pole or something to cling on.

Thanks once again Kaylee, I have noticed that what could be considered hard to find or rare, in the UK, is not so much here in the US, I find that amusing, but then we do live in different parts of the world, I guess that's what makes life interesting as far as growing plants, Lol. But I do enjoy your videos, they are so full of helpful information that I find it enjoyable to learn about. I am currently trying my hand at growing a Monstera Deliciosa Variegata from seeds, it could be an interesting journey, the first few took over three weeks to sprout, they have such a hard shell that it takes a lot to break through it, so hopefully the rest will sprout soon also.

Hi, love your videos. Doing a great job. On the Monstera deliciosa VS Monstera deliciosa var. borsigiana. Which one do I have? One of the most frequently asked questions at the moment I think. From the sources I have this is actually the same species. Only variations. Borsigiana is not acknowledged as it’s own subspecies by botanists and is a “made up” name. Personally though I think it’s fair to separate the two. There’s some confusion to how you can separate the two. The absolutely best way is to look at the distance between the stem nodes. Very short “real” Monstera Deliciosa. Longer Monstera Deliciosa var. Borsigiana. The two have different ways to grow where the Borsigiana is more of a climber. The “real” Deliciosa will definitely get bigger leaves. Possibly more rows of fenestration and bigger “ruffles”. But the borsigiana can get these features as well when they get older. If you buy a cheap Monstera D. It’s 99% that you get the Bosigiana. If a shop sell the “real” one they will likely know and give it a higher price tag. But you can be lucky. Thanks again for your your videos. You definitely don’t have to apologize for not having all the info about every rare plant. You still have more info than we could ever dig up!

S H Don’t know if anyone else has commented on this but both ‘albo’ and ‘alba’ actually mean ‘white’ in Latin. Yellow variegation would be referred to as ‘aureo’ or ‘aurea’ which mean ‘gold’. E.g. ‘f. aureo marginata’/‘f. marginata aurea’ would refer to yellow variegated margins on the leaf

I have a very mature deliciosa but he's sprouting out juvenile leaves. I've had him about 3 months and he's grown 3 mature leaves and 2 juvenile. I love these plants

Not really in my experience, most that are sold as obliqua are just adansonii…

Great video! I have added a few new plants to my wishlist. I prefer white variegation over yellow. The prettiest variegation I have ever seen is an Alocasia Zebrina and I want it so bad.

Would you be able to do a video on Ficus’ or on just Ficus Elastica? I do find a lot of people talking about ruby rubber tree but I haven’t been able to find the difference between the ruby rubber tree and the belize rubber tree, I also haven’t been able to find anything to say they are the same plant either. Thank you

Amazing how much more common obliqua has become in two years. Great news for conservation tbh.

It's worth mentioning that non-variegated standleyana exists as well and is much more difficult to obtain than the variegated versions! I have only ever seen two non-variegated standleyana online or in person!

I purchased one adansonii years back but last year it had two leaves with white variegations but then still continued to be green on upcoming leaves.

So on your last video I said I wouldn’t get a monstera adansonii and that was a lie. I ended up seeing an 8inch pot and bought it lol. Anyway whomever is loaning you those super rare plants must really love and trust you ;). Anyway I prefer the yellow variegation over yellow.
