Rare Plant Index #8 | Peperomia | Uncommon to Extremely Rare Plants!

This was the most difficult Rare Plant Index I've made so far - as I said in the video - demand for Peperomia just isn't there like it is with Aroids, Hoya, etc. Even plants listed as extremely rare on this list don't really have a price tag to match.
Let me know your thoughts!

I love that you did this list, honestly I don't like having anything even potentially toxic for my cat around (even though he doesn't usually chew on plants, I just sleep better at night there's no chance for anything happening) and peperomia are one of the few houseplants that are non-toxic. And from this list I got the picture that it's actually a very very variable genera and I'd definetely find like 10 or more I'd like to have... So you're the reason I'm looking more into them. I think they would go well with my only houseplant fittonia (I have lots of plants, just not houseplants :) ). So thank you, will add on my "if I come across buy" list. If you ever get a peperomia in your shop like the variegated water melon one, I'd just buy it :D

This is the first Rare Plant Index where I have seen considerable differences between what is rare for you in the UK vs me in Canada. The obtusifolias are EVERYWHERE both variegated and not. The silvering looking one that looks like a caperata is also super common along with the rosso. A lot of the rest though I had never seen. The rain drop is not common at all here. I don't think I have ever seen it in store actually! Super neat. I love peperomia!

Peperomia are some of my absolute favorites! I have so many. That trinervis bicolor looks so much like the terrestrial orchid Goodyera pubescens. I am not done with the video but I have owned the pink caperata and although it was stunning, you may want to look into peperomia griseo-argentea 'pink lady', it still has the pink but also a nice cream, silver and mint mottled variegation as well and the leaves are ruffled. I love the caperata but the griseo-argentea just has it all going on. If you like the rugosa, check out peperomia harmony's great pumpkin. And I am unsure if the moonlight is the same as peperomia 'frost' but they look very similar, super icy.

I'm in Australia, and I can't remember seeing the first two common peperomias. The raindrop is also not easily available at the moment. You can find it, but it's not everywhere and definitely not in Ikea. Scandens is available and the Argyreia (so cute, love these), Obtusifolia, clusiifolia (got one and I agree, it doesn't make me happy either!) are all available. Rosso is available (I kill these and they're very pretty). I've not seen the Maculosa or the Vericilatta. It's so interesting how different plants are common in different places.

Eeeek!! I have the Caperata Pink Lady!!! I was super excited to find a single pot of it left in our nursery (South Africa). There was no doubt in my mind that I would bring it home. It is definitely a plant that turns me into a helicopter plant mom. The pink variegation, as with any other variegated plant, makes it not as hardy. So far so good, but definitely has adjusted to the space it is in my house. It is less full than when I bought it, but still alive and making tiny little green leaves!! Slowly...

Oh cool! I picked up two plants that were labeled as P. graveolens, but they don't look like tacos at all, and now I know they're P. verticillata! They're very compact so far, but they're also wee, so it'll be interesting to see if they stay compact as they mature.

I have one Peperomia that is not on this list and I can't find it anywhere on the internet. Is a bit similar to the watermelon peperomia but with much bigger leaves and much darker. I hope I can show you a picture of it!

The peperomia verticillata that you said was elongated was in fact elongated! Many give these things the same light as other peperomias (bright indirect) however these are meant to take full sun like a succulent. Thats like if you put a cacti/succulent in an eastern window. If you look up the peperomia, you will see a lot stretched and reaching for the sun, however there are a few in there that are compact and short that recieve full sun. Mine recieves full sun and is nowhere near that stretchy.

It's so interesting seeing how plant availability differs in different parts of the world. Obtusifolia and Tri colour are soooo common in Australia. You'll find them anywhere.
