thank you for this!! i could never put my finger on why i loved security breach but ruin was so underwhelming, you really put into words a lot of places that it's legitimately weaker as a product for people who actually liked security breach. also - i keep seeing people in your comments seemingly, like, hurt that you said you preferred Roxy's characterization in SB to ruin. i think it's a really significant point that it feels completely ooc for her to suddenly be super nurturing and soft and sweet, and that it takes value away from both her and Freddy's previous characterization for her to suddenly be just like him. i do think there's an interesting idea to be explored that maybe she plays favorites with children, and cassie is one of those favorites, but it's hard to tell if that was the, like, intention behind it when they made that choice, or if they just saw that people loved her and decided to make her all mommy-coded. someone here in the comments said her loving side could've been more like a cool older sister situation, and i agree that would've suited her "uncorrupted side" a lot more than just completely softening her. she's not the same Roxy that everyone claims they fell in love with, and there could be in-universe explanations for that but i think it's pretty, like, biased to not acknowledge it.

I feel like a lot of the issues can be tied back to aiming a horror game more at a younger and marketable audience. For your problem with the comics retconing burntrap's entire existence, and why there's a station even further down, I think there's a reason for both. I think burntrap did exist, and that Gregory saw it. The room just outside the mimic's walled off room has a freddy backpack with Gregory's name on it, meaning he's been down there. My theory is that after freeing Vanessa, she knew something about burntrap and she and Gregory went down there, found Mimic as burntrap, and moved him even deeper to seal him behind concrete (the mimic might've just changed costume or something idk). They're also potentially the ones who set up the M.X.E.S program, as at least Gregory can hack, due to him being patient 42 or whatever the number was. Edit: as for the Roxy personality shift, I think it's only because it's Cassie, as they had some sort of unspecified bonding moment during her birthday party. I don't know what Cassie did that was special, but Roxy remembered it well and positively. As for the safe mode thing, I was always under the assumption that freddy booting into safe mode just made him safe from the glitchtrap virus, and the glitchtrap virus possibly makes their worst traits worse (Roxy became meaner and less confident, Monty became angrier and more destructive, and Chica became so much of a glutton that she eats just actual trash). If this assumption is correct, than Roxy at the very least would be a bit nicer. This, combined with her liking Cassie, could be what results in her acting differently. Edit 2: to clarify, I do wish there were more scenes with Roxy acting like security breach roxy, but that one scene in the salon where she cries then yells at Gregory before running after him was basically it. And maybe that Roxy scene where she was nice to Cassie could've been a bit different to connect better with how she acted in security breach. Also as a side note, her being mean is a facade to cover up her own insecurity, so it's possible she just didn't want to use that cover around Cassie, for whatever reason. This could also explain the personality shift, but again I think it could've been connected better. Maybe instead of her randomly being trapped under a forklift, she's sitting somewhere crying when Cassie approaches. Her being under a forklift didn't add anything anyway, as Roxy can't see Cassie attempting to reboot her anyway and it also removes a minor issue of how she got out from under it to save Cassie from the mimic.

Remember, Cassie's dad likes Bonnie. He was down there. Even in Ruin, collectables hint at his disappearance. And Mask Bot has an unusual flesh color when wearing the mask for the first time. Yes, Help Wanted 2 came later but after this year of Ruin being we now know the pieces we got in Ruin are doubly confirmed in HW2. Not just because Cassie's dad likes bonnie and is the Bonnie bully from Fredbear's, but because of the rabbit ears on Mask Bot specifically. At least we know Mask Bot is related to something rabbit related. And if MXES is a good guy technically, and Bonnie is decommissioned (and was cut from having what wound up as Eclipse's dialogue) and Maskbot is forced open with ears as a symbolic gesture giving the only other rabbit mask to Bonnie Bully's daughter, while HELPI with yellow eyes is the Mimic program, then I think that the only bad rabbits in the Pizzaplex era are from the Mimic program with Afton influence. Of course, MXES could actually be a Mimic Program of his own, as he adapts and is cold and technical to keep the Mimic at bay, but is programed like Glamdad and the others before the Glitchtrap version of the Mimic program interfered with the Glamrock's own programming to be generally good.

I kinda disagree with the idea that the Mimic is a narrative improvement over Burntrap existing and also being Afton. For better or worse, Afton _is_ the main villain of FNaF, and the other villains are either connected strongly to him (Baby) or blatantly just William A Bit To The Right (Vanny, the Mimic). It's like watching the Mario series try to replace Bowser and also failing at it. Him being a cockroach isn't a bad thing. His catchphrase is "I always come back", except now actually he only did that twice and then he dies for good and is replaced by WilliamGPT? This is the _better_ version? The Mimic isn't particularly scary, he's just there in the game, and in the books he's horribly overexplained. The one piece of advice I always see thrown around is "Avoid showing the monster as much as possible if you actually want it to be scary", and this is something FNaF did really well in _exclusively_ FNaF 1, kinda good in FNaF 3, and pretty terribly everywhere else, but writing a bunch of book stories where they overexplain the monster, removing all the fear of the unknown from it _before it ever shows up in a game_ really takes the cake. Now it's not "What the fuck is that thing, oh shit", it's "Oh it's the copycat robot that kills people because it's programmed to rip off heads, and also because it's copying William Afton, and also because it has PTSD Goo inside it." And design-wise it's just completely sauceless. To give the books their credit, they were onto something. They had it slowly evolving into Burntrap, and it could also transform into a horrible metal spider. Great, that works well enough. What we get in the game is... a bare endo with an abscess on its cheek and a Karen haircut. Ooh, terrifying. I think the Mimic would've been universally rejected as a replacement if people weren't determined to keep the FNaF6 ending as significant as possible. But as hard as Henry's speech goes... honestly I'm not really wowed by it any more. Think about it for five seconds, and what happens is that Henry, a character from the books who is never mentioned to exist in the games before that point, suddenly shows up. However, this does not make those books part of the game timeline, because book!Henry is dead. He then reveals that SAVE HIM Kid/The Puppet is actually also Charlie from the books. This could maybe tie into the real Charlie being dead and the book protagonist being a robot, but IIRC the Puppet wasn't in the books either. Then he sets the building on fire to kill everyone, even though Springtrap and the Puppet already survived the FNaF3 fire. There's a hidden tape elsewhere in the game that says fire kills Ghost Goo, but like, since when? Because not only does the FNaF3 fire not kill Billy the Murder Furry and Charlie, it also doesn't liberate the souls unless you get the good ending. Which MoltenMCI (which is probably true) implies didn't happen. So that's _seven_ previously fireproof souls that are suddenly not fireproof. And then the entire surviving cast of the games dies because this not-dead dead guy from a different continuity suddenly popped up to killsteal.

William, to me, is boring at this point. The new era could have easily just forgotten about the old one, had Freddy's exist and grow without murders hanging over them, and then BAM, new murders. We're back here again with a different villain. (Note, we'd still have merch of the old animatronics. They're classics! They just aren't haunted) Maybe they try to act like William, but after a few games- no, it's someone with a different goal or something, and was only trying to make it seem like William's ghost is back to throw people off their trail To me, either everyone from FNAF 6 should be dead and stay dead (the way more satisfying route) or everyone from 6 should all be alive. They emerge from the rubble and look at each other and go "guess we'll try to kill each other in another 20 years. See you all at the picnic. Baby, you're still bringing the ice cream, right? Cool. Cool cool. Hey, Mike, uh... can I borrow a ride?" Which to me is why Glitchtrap fell flat. He felt like that second one. Just a retread of the same story. Bowser works because Mario games have no plot, no character motivation. "Good guy tries to save good girl from bad turtle." But if FNAF wants story depth, it can't just keep bringing out Willy and being like,"we tricked this old man 6 games ago. He wasn't scary in 3. He wasn't scary in 6, and he's a relic of a bygone era."

Tbh, I am one of the few who never had a big issue believing her characterization specifically BECAUSE it is so obvious how we are supposed to read it. The animatronics were supposedly never violent towards people and Ruin just proves that point because she straight up didn't even intend to harm Gregory either.
