The haka is a traditional dance of the Maori people of New Zealand, or as the Maori call it, "Land of the Long White Cloud."While the haka has been popularized for it's association with the All Blacks, New Zealand's national rugby team, there are actually many forms of the dance. The most widely known version, and the one used by the All Blacks, is the "Ka Mate." Despite the seemingly fierce, warlike gestures on display, this is a celebratory dance and is accredited to Te Rauparaha, a leader of the Ngāti Toa tribe during the early 19th century. There are many of versions of the haka and historically the form was used for many different purposes ranging from greeting friendly tribes (powhiri) to preparing for battle (peruperu). There was also a divinatory haka (tutungarahu), as well as a funeral lament performed by women (maemae).

Kiaora whanau I'm Maori and enjoyed this. I was taught we have ancient links to Hawaii, either way we're both polynesian. Maori ma remember these brothers live in annexed lands too, and have suffered similar fate as us. Haka belongs to all nesians and if our culture in anyway helps yours, then feel free to embrace it.

As I was listening to the song and guitar playing I thought "Sounds like Hawaiian music." Kiwis and Hawaiians definitely share common blood.

5:28 Is that ‘Toia’? Or am I hearing wrong. Hui e, tāiki e... Tōia Aue! Tōia mai te waka nei, kumea mai te waka nei. Ki te takotoranga i takoto ai. Tiriti te mana motuhake. Te tangi a te manu nei. Pīpīwharauroa... Kui kui kui Whiti whitiora Hui e, tāiki e! Hope I spelt all that right, I actually had to look up the words- just because I know the song doesn’t mean I know how to spell the lyrics.

We are just praying that even performed "mock" anger gets directed at the Devil, not our fellow humans. I know it is a symbolic dance of bravery, so that is what I pray, that we are brave against the right Enemy! We have to watch what spirits we adopt, and even the anger of men "does not serve the purposes of God"...ever...He showed me once. Only His anger is perfectly directed, which is why the Word also says: "Revenge is mine, saith the Lord!"

Anger...you mean the Haka? Its a war dance dedicated to the god of war Tumatauenga.

MAORI VILLIAN I take it you don't believe a war god could be an actual spirit force operating in the supernatural. I'm not mocking the Maori-fullas, mate. Just the opposite, but we don't always act wisely in how we portray supernatural forces. Would a "war dance" be invoking a spirit force to help one win a war against ones enemies? It wasn't invented to entertain tourists, so doing that with it seems risky to me. I prefer to interact only with my Heavenly Father, His Resurrected Son, and Holy Spirit who is more powerful than Tumatauenga...

+barbie pauly i believe in my cultures beliefs, tradition and language. This is are our way of life. This is done for tourist to better understand our way of life instead of assuming things. Tumatauenga is a spirit all our Maori gods are spirits. In days of old the haka was to intimidate your enemy if your haka was fierce no battle would take place. In these times its done for sport(challenge),issues(politics, child abuse, suicide, domestic violence etc)celebrations(weddings, birthdays, graduation),the dead. This is what makes NZ unique and has brought different cultures together as one.

MAORI VILLIAN What town are you from? I'm from the Gisborne area. The Maori spirits only try to blow through people to get them to claim the land. I happen to think Maoris, Islanders, and Hawaiians are some of t he Lost Tribes of Israel that got scattered abroad. Look at the similarities in language to Egyptian. They are everywhere that you run across brown people that look straight off of an Egyptian pyramid painting, lol...and maybe some of them mixed with Oriental races they encountered in their wanderings, resulting in the Japanese and Korean cultures. The Maori accent sounds very "Samurai" to me! Who knows what curious things happened in the past. But the Holy Spirit is the powerful defender and inspirer of Humanity, fighting for our right to be spared and undeceived, as we embrace our blood redemption of Jesus in God's Good Kingdom of Love, which triumphed on the cross. I reckon the Maoris acquitted themselves pretty excellently when war broke out with the settlers, shortening the war and saving many lives. There is no doubt in my mind who was there first, so God Defend New Zealand, so that things continue well for the blended cultures. Nice to come across you here! (:D
