Groovy episode. Well done on the stern anchor guys.

This one gives me some good laughs. At 11:35 John's mellow dramatic response as Kristina comes flying from the wood's trail screaming about a "Massive" spider web frantically patting herself down, as if to be eliminating any possibility of arachnid invasion to her lovely form. So what consoling remonstrations does dear John have to provide for his precious bride's moment of panic?: "You got your gypsy earrings on I don't think they can bite you.", as matter-of-factly as to be no doubt of this revelation... Question for Kristina, was the coconut chia pudding your recipe? Thanks for sharing guys. This is the last episode of Kristina's Travels left for me to watch. I watched the infommercial advisement type ones before starting on the sailing ones. My system is start at either end and word toward the middle. My sincere hope and prayer is you will acquire another sail boat for world adventures. Keep us posted please. God Bless and take care John and Kristina🙏🏻🕊💜

Living in a boat in the Med & agree with your comments. My philosophy is that during the day I don’t get too concerned about space. People are usually on the boat & we can just push ourselves apart. Many boats leave near sunset & then you can rearrange if required. What is annoying is when people arrive late in the day & instead of taking an outer anchor spot, they crowd the closer anchorages, drop insufficient chain & then head off to town.

When you set a stern anchor, to make it easier to lift, put a line and a float (a bleach bottle or small fender) on the stock. You will be able to weigh the anchor from the dinghy, as the flukes will slide backwards from the mud, and the float will serve as a marker since other boats can't see your stern anchor line. Great stories. Lessons learned

You should carry a 1 to 2 metre length of heavy chain so you can loop it around your stuck anchor chain/rope and shackle the ends together. Tie another rope around this loop and using the tender let it all slide down to your stuck anchor manoeuvring away from your yacht. Use that rope to pull the end of the anchor backwards out of the hole it has dug itself into. Comes out easy that way.

Anchors get stuck in mud all the time, and you handled it perfectly. I understand the reef proximity was a bit scary, but otherwise just float above and inch it in bit by bit. The rocking of the boat is your friend, it will gradually rock the anchor up out of its mud.. If it wasn’t for the reef you can take the bow anchor up first and finish with the aft, then you can motor slightly back and forth above it to increase the rocking/bending.. Power winch or power windlass (aft - yes, the do exist too) is great help, but can fail too if very stuck..

That anchor is the perfect one for mud and sand where you need good holding do not be afraid of using it as it is designed to dig in hard and deep. You are now learning from a Kiwi so there are three ways to recover these style anchors the Easy (not your way) the even Easier (even more not your way) and the very difficult (your way). *Lecture mode on* So the easy is to lift your anchor first by dropping the stern anchor line (tie the loose line up and add a buoy so you can pick it up), you can then pick up the line at the bow using the boat motor to pivot the anchor (twist it) loose from its bite then use the windlass to haul it up (Snubber the chain and let it out a little to remove the chain from the windlass). The Easier is when you use that type of anchor you have a second line on the anchor with a float basically straight up attached to the end of the anchor that digs into then sand or mud (opposite end to where you attach the line to the boat). You do the same as the easy (drop stern and bow anchor first) but when you go to collect the anchor you hook up the vertical line to the anchor at the bow drive the boat to push or pull in the opposite direction the anchor dug in (or somewhere close) and it will come free and up to the top of the mud/sand. You can then haul it up backwards and recover the stern line. NOTE: With the easier be wary of the line in the water and your prop I have seen others use a dingy and sea anchor to know where that line is or like me pay attention. Lastly if you are using this anchor on the bow lift the chain off the mud/sand then you can power over it to have the flutes change to an up direction, flop the anchor on its side or ideally come loose and lift out, loose is great the other two its dig direction is now out of the mud. In a storm that is the anchor I would trust in sand and mud as it will keep trying to dig deeper than the newer designs unless direction changes but that is where the length of chain comes in, newer designs instead only go so deep then start dragging in bad conditions or under sized but are easy to recover and fine in most conditions. *Lecture mode off*😀
