Sad for both Keely and Mu. Keely felt like the genuine favorite this time around, and if she wins gold, there will be an asterisk on it for many fans. It’s better for everyone if the best beat the best.

Really depends on her time. If she is able to run sub 1:55 and beat Athing's PR of 1:54.97 then there would be no asterisk.
@thisopinionwillexpire
@thisopinionwillexpire 2 күн бұрын
@@igloozoo3771 yea that’s a good point. Best case scenario for Keely is Mu makes it, PRs in the final, and Keely still wins. But let me get your thoughts on this: What would be better in your eyes for Keely? Scenario #1: Keely and Mu both make the Olympic final, Keely wins gold without a PR (like 1:56), but Mu has a poor showing and fades to the back half of the pack (running something like 1:59). Scenario #2: Mu doesn’t make the final and Keely wins (with a 1:54 low breaking Mu’s PR).

Mu has been injured, for any fan to think there should be an asterik if someone else wins gold, well...they aren't racing fans, just Mu fans. The rest of us realise that she most likely wouldn't win gold anyway after the year she has had.

@@chuckd5819 im so glad to finally see this comment. So many stans completely ignoring the fact that she’s run one 800 in the last year and barely broke 1:59. She didn’t look near top form in trials prior to the finals. To think that she would be an obvious medal contender and should’ve gotten an automatic bid just because of her record and win three whole years ago is just nonsense. To be clear, I’m a fan but I’m also realistic and respect USTAF for having the system in place that we do.

That's who gets to race and win or place in that race,the hundred plus years of Olympic games this is how it turns out. Many situations have arisen in this one hundred plus years of competition. Remember in 1980,Don Page an American 800 meters runner was ranked number one in the world ,but did not get to compete due to politics!. Just things to remember

Kersey’s program is to have his athletes compete as less as possible that is why you now rarely see Mu or Levrone attend competitions until they get close to qualifiers or world/olympic championships. Why? Controversial. Could be a couple reasons but I think it is to keep the doping protocols consistent. Mu is young and lacks experience RUNNING IN A PACK. She needs to compete more. She didn’t need Kersey’s doping regime to win. The year Kersey retires I will celebrate.

@@igloozoo3771 Well, she came back from her hamstring injury. And, she didn't choose to get boxed in. I watched the race a few times and Athing basically tried to move into the inside but she got clipped by Raven Rodgers. It wasn't intentional. It just happened. There wasn't any room for anyone to move and no one was giving anyone else space to do so (when normally they do). So, she didn't chose to get boxed in. She tried to move to the inside, but she had no room to do so and fell. It happens. But, even if she hadn't fallen, she didn't seem like she was at 100%. And, I hope that we do see her at Diamond League events this summer. But, I also hope that she mentally regroups and is a better space to run. Athing (and many athletes) have been saying they aren't having fun, they aren't enjoying running, etc. I think that can be just as difficult to overcome as a physical injury. So, who knows? But, I am sure Athing will recover and be fine and be back stronger than ever in the future.
