I believe that anyone that has watched your progress in building your homestead can see that you are a steward of the land and your impact is very small, and likely positive for your area. Also, every tree you use for a building is a carbon sink for as long as that building lasts, and every new tree that comes up will gather far more carbon than older trees. Keep up the good work Shawn, you're one of the good ones.

I have 50 acres on Vancouver island, it has been logged 2 times since being first logged of first growth in the late 1800's. Now I have it, every year I cut down 25 to 30 trees for my saw mill and 15 to 20 for firewood and you can hardly tell, most of what I take is from thinning. If I left it and cut nothing and did no thinning at all it will choke itself out or burn because it's so dense. In the area's I have cut and thinned the forest is now healthy. Most of the criticism is from unreasonable people who do not have a clue about what you're talking about and refuse to listen and learn.

Haha.. But, i must say - here in Austria we need this apartment houses. My country is to small for our 10 Million Inhabitants! If every Austrian would have own property and House, we would glue one on the other with our Houses. The Space for wood and agriculture would be to small in 20 Years... So, to safe the environment it is better to have our big apartment Houses with 20, 30 50 Families living inside! That`s the only way to safe our woods and the land for getting Food... And in my case, I couldn`t live off grid like Shawn James! I am disabled, can hardly walk, and i`m in constant pain! I am retired since almost 10 years now due to my health issues. For me it`s a painful job to maintain my apartment properly! Processing firewood? LOL...My dear damaged spine: Thanks to you, I am happy to get out of bed, and make a move or two... lol

You inspired me about a year ago. Some stuff in my life fell all apart and I was just left wondering what the heck. Nothing I was doing made sense any longer and I needed to change. I was watching you build and basically living your dream. My dream is a little different looking, but I sold my house, paid off all debt, bought a truck (paid for) and Was moving towards my goal of creating my own indie film production business. Shawn, this was a dignified and considered response to some criticism that does not always necessarily warrant a dignified response. Frankly, your previous comments were sufficient justification for your actions - not that you are even obliged to justify yourself. You have done a remarkable job elevating the discourse on this subject. During the current COVID-19 crisis, a great many people on social media have done a spectacular job demonstrating how they can ‘race to the bottom’. I’d rather not cite specifics - I think we all know of some obvious examples. So, while so many exemplify what it means to appeal to the lowest common denominator, you have consistently taken the high road, and I commend you for your patience, humility, and good humour. You really are doing a spectacular job of entertaining, informing, and educating. Keep up the great work.

Those who criticize are jealous that they have neither the knowledge, ability nor the willingness to do it. At least you are using what is going to eventually fall and go to waste. You have to clear periodically to keep the growth strong. That also helps the forest remain strong and be less susceptible to disease. You are doing what our forefathers did and we appreciate you sharing it with us to teach us that you can most things by hand with minimal power tools. Never understood how those who criticize about this lifestyle use products and live in a house that used all these resources to make. Your carbon footprint is much smaller then theirs.

Shawn, I live in 20 acres of woodland. When I bought the property it was so densely wooded you could hardly walk into it and after 20 yards you could become totally disoriented. The reason for this is that there was so many dead trees hanging up on each other (sometimes five trees leaning on one) that it was a dark and tangled mess. Healthy trees had been stifled and bent by the deadwood and many had developed disease and were sparse in foliage.I had some trees at 120 feet high that were not much more than 16" at the stump. Many of the Aspens were sick and hollow trunked and very dangerous, they sometimes had ant colonies inside them amidst the darkness of these areas was very little ecological diversity, yet in more open areas there is a profusion of wild flowers and berry bearing plants. Every winter several of these tall spindly trees would blow over as their root structures were inadequate. I have spent several years living on this land without major removals, then I started by removing hangups, widow, makers and trees that were laid dead and rotting in the forest floor. I coppiced vine Maples and have since noticed deer are glad to graze on the new growth, stunted Douglas Fir saplings are now producing new shoots and Paper-Bark Birch seedlings are growing. I have removed a lot of dead standing Birches as they are very dangerous, but I have left those frequented by woodpeckers. The Aspens act as nitrogen fixers and I have notice an increase of orchids in some areas where sick ones were removed. Also last year I noticed a much greater prevalence of butterflies. The point I am making is that cutting down trees should be done from a stewardship perspective in that the land owner should take time to observe and learn the ecology of the environment and understand how to maximize diversity of both flora and fauna. In time I intend to introduce a wider diversity of trees to the property, trees that will cohabit with existing species and add some benefit to the woodland and all its inhabitants. I have twenty acres that I had cleared fifteen years ago and not being around to maintain the property, the forest has reclaimed this area. It is fertile river bottom land, fertile land. I am almost smothered with growth. I can't see the river which is only 75 yards away. Incredible. Good to see and good to know that the forest has this capability. If you are looking for other examples, look at old abandoned farms. Their fields have been taken over by trees. If you leave the soil fertile when you are finished, what you are clearing now will be reclaimed by the forest when you abandon it. Clear cutting where these big industrial companies clear miles and miles of forest that's a different story. I've seen the devastation done there. It is really difficult to stomach when you look out and see miles and miles of cleared land.

I don’t know about the birch, but maples grow like weeds. They are beautiful and very useful in many, many ways, but will take over if you don’t control them. They pop up in your bushes, vegetable and flower gardens, directly beside a building, in your cement driveway, and the spouting on your house. There is a need to control them or they will take over. They will grow healthy and strong if you thin them out and are not competing with one another.

I cut down trees on my land. However, I bought the land when it was about to be logged. In other words, I bought land that was a tree farm and turned it into a natural forest over the past decade and I continue to buy land to do just that. The trees I do cut make room for new plants and wildlife to flourish, and the whole forest becomes a sustainable resource for myself, my family, and the surrounding fauna and flora.

Forester here. Mother nature likes mature trees to be removed as it opens up the understory to make way for new seedlings. It may be aesthetically unpleasing to us but good for mother. Seans footprint is surely smaller than most. Trees reach a point of full maturity then go into decline. Its best to harvest them before they decay to utilize them for timber. Keep up the good work Sean. You are an inspiration to many.

I moved to Spain from San Francisco about 11 years ago. I love the fact that in Canada you can purchase land and make it your own, including cutting down trees to build your cabin, etc. Here in Spain, even if you purchase property, you are not allowed to cut down any pine trees. So that, even if we wanted to do what you are doing on your property, we are not allowed to do that here. I am so glad that you have that opportunity there in Canada. I love your videos. Love your channel. I am in my sixties, I am from West Virginia, and have purchased 50 acres of my great grandfather’s farming property which is now forest. I have a woodlot that's about 4.5 acres. I selectively cut to keep it looking like a healthy forest. Everybody around me gathers firewood by clearcutting and leaving the branches as a mulch that restricts new growth and makes a fire hazard. And they try to convince me that I should do the same. I was told "Take what you need and let God take care of the forest" We do need to grow food, however. And a clearing is necessary for some crops.

I've had to clear around two acres of my forest to plant fruit trees and have a garden. It was hard for me to see some very old trees fall. I even cried when the ground would shake with each fall but it's somthing that is very vital for my future food source and my children and grandchildren future. As far as I can see, you have been making an effort to live harmoniously and sustainably within your surroundings. We own a "tree farm' in Maine that we bought just to have woods and not develop. We'll clear just a little for living and a garden, but preservation is the goal. Forest management does include thinning to make room for other to grow larger, too. You are definitely an inspiration!

Shawn, I live in the Southern US and in our state we plant more trees than we cut. There is more forest land now than when I was a boy 50 plus years ago. With the amount of rain we get every year in our area we are I a near-jungle environment. As an example, a pine tree in our area grows to maturity in less than 25 years. An oak tree can grow from a tiny sapling to a tree 18 inches or more in diameter in less than 20 years. Selective cutting in our area benefits the forest and keeps them thriving. I understand your view and actually support it. My family lives in a 350 acre family forest and we enjoy the wildlife in the area. We have deer, foxes, rabbits, squirrels, turkeys, bobcats, coyotes and more on our property and we enjoy the wildness of our place here. We have been working from home for over three weeks now and honestly it has not been tough on us. While we are not self sufficient we are have always planned for the future. Because of where we live, we understand that the economy is at least as fragile as the natural disasters like hurricanes cause it to be. While we are not self sufficient we are, maybe we should say, self efficient. We always have some food stored in case there is a disruption in the supply chain. Our chickens supply us with eggs. We grow a small garden that I am enlarging this year and, thanks to my father, I am able to use my hands to build, repair and design the things we need when I either don’t want to buy them or just want to make something the way I want it. We planted a garden in our back yard today! We will see how much survives the birds, possums and squirrels ... and, of course, the Texas heat. Good luck on your garden too! I am sure ours is not as large ... it’s about 20 x 12 feet and will be plenty large for us. Black eyed peas, sweet corn, radishes, turnips, squash and tomatoes. Plus a goji berry and raspberry bush in others parts, as well as the various herbs throughout the front and back areas. We are excited!

I think Shawn has a great attitude in regards to the area he lives. He has the attitude all the greenies of this world need to adapt working close to the land as he does. We would not have the wildfires as we experience globally. Even the world aboriginal groups did have super methods of management of the land they live in. Along with less nomadic methods of living , then learn to provide food for his familiar is a great plus but when Shawn goes into selling produce to increase his life style then you greenies can step in. I noticed in north central Minnesota yesterday on my walk in the woods, (that had some logging a few years ago) just how many acorns were sprouting already. The Deer tore up the ground through the snow this winter and it looked tilled. It was awesome. That's nature doing it's thing. Shawn... that clearing your making will even benefit wildlife. From Central Ontario..... 12 years ago I cleared an area of about 5 acres intending to use it as pasture. We fell behind on our plans and now we are having to clear it again. People don't realize how quickly, even in our cold climate, trees, and everything else regenerates.

Hello Shawn & Cali! My suggestion is to build the building structures in the edges of the "SQUARE" and put your "Garden" in the middle of the SQUARE! A lot less stress to keep the animals out of your garden.
