Shawn, I haven't left the house here in Ohio for three weeks because of the Virus. I spend hours on youtube watching airplane videos and My Self-reliance & Shawn James. I was watching one about the Black bears and putting a window on the side. My point is that a 77 yr, an old lady wrote in the comments that she wishes she would have met you earlier in life so you could build her a cabin in the woods. My wife and I of 64 years laughed at that and as it was funny. Wonder whatever happened to her. My wife thinks your cute, she doesn't want a cabin though. HA HA!

Being debt free is key and being in debt has been the downfall of the past 50 years. We wanted junk and could not afford it. As a woman, I am wondering if getting the latest shoe design or my toenails painted should have ever really mattered. Wake up time. Food matters. Water matters. A source (or several) of income matters. Family dependence matters (pulling together as a unit). Life is unfolding in a huge step back and it’s happening all over the world - all at once. Keep talking wisdom and reason, Shawn. .

Bonnie, A family we know lived in Africa for years, but would come back to the U.S. to visit. Walking thru a supermarket with their 9 -10yr. Old son he replied “People don’t even need half of this stuff”. It made me realize how spoiled we are in the U.S. Spend, spend, spend, even if we can’t really afford it. The more you have the more you need to work to pay and maintain those items. The less you have the freer you are.

Capitalism has a certain amout of "lie" built in to it. I am not suggesting a better system only that this one has some very stingy people in control of it. They stole many nest eggs back in 2008 and I am concerned they will now see more ways to get at them by taking away pension funds and many other benefits connected to social security.

True. But then, life itself doesn't come with any guarantees. Not everyone can live off the land in a remote wilderness area. Even in the most remote times, once mankind moved out of caves there would be areas of permanent settlement. That's never going to change. Man is a social creature, and we are stronger together than apart. What we need to do as a people, as nations, is to take back our power from the multi-national corporations that big business that exported all of our jobs to essentially slave labor countries. Now some people are fortunate enough to be able to move away and turn their back on the rest of the world, but not everybody is in that position, nor in many cases do they want to be even if they can afford to buy land and learn all the things necessary to be able to create a new life living, essentially, in the 1700s. I like vacationing in the woods. But I don't want to live in the 1700s. And as a 68 year old woman with a heart condition I need to be where I can access medical care quickly and easily, and have my pharmacy and supermarket and other shopping within easy walking distance. That ain't in upper Wisconsin in the north woods (I've lived in SE Wisconsin in Milwaukee my entire life) or in upper Ontario or Kodiak Island in Alaska!

@@jannibal9273 Sure! I'm not saying life has to be one extreme or the other. I'm saying that the people in the suburbs who have half an acre of land or so have the opportunity to build little backyard gardens and have some control over their food. The fact that almost everyone in America relies on the supply chain is unsafe. To reclaim some grasp of what it means to plant a seed in the dirt will be very beneficial to society.

Hi Shawn. As I was just listening to you, I had a strange feeling like you're on another planet. I wonder how does it feel to not have to wash your hands all the time or being close to another human. I'm a senior living alone but I'm always prepared. I don't waste money and I thank God that several years ago I invested in a bidet. I am a self reliant old girl as best as possible. I even have a scooter to get around Ottawa. I am very mindful of washing hands and keeping my distance and wearing a mask when needed. I'm feeling very good and have planed to stay that way. You're right about planing and making wise decisions that makes you happy. I keep in touch with my friends by phone, email, Facebook and messenger. I allow for lots of laughter and negotiate with sadness anger and compassion for so many. I always have a project going and I feel very grateful that I always plan ahead for a mysterious future. My faith and humor are my special handle. I always look forward to your videos. Enjoy Shawn.

@Just think Mine is not to tell others how to live. There are too many people easily influenced either way. I like Shawn. He's a thinker He considers all his options before doing. He is a man who chose to fallow his dream and he is blessed with a beautiful family to stand by him. He did give time to the other life he had and in his reality he dared to be different to follow his dream, I love the forest and I happen to be a sculpture. I'm 75 and I did carve since I was 6. I guess that's one of the reason I appreciate seeing Shawn work as well as sharing his thoughts. He's not trying to get us to do the same as him. I see he's inviting us to think about what make us happy. To organize our future by what brings us life, joy.

I have refused to grow veggies for about 60 years now, after a childhod spent tending a huge farmhouse garden! But this year, I am going to plant a small garden with heirloom seeds, and save all the seedsfrom the veggies that I grow, to use again next year. I am thinking of a backdoor salad garden. I managed to retire with the house paid in full, but I was 70 when that was complete. But other debts still are in place, thanks to life in Wisconsin's largest city. Stay safe, keep sending us these informative vlogs.

Thanks for your video and your honest way to be! In the beginning of the 1990 my husband and I were talking about starting a new life abroad , from Denmark , and we were nearly gone to Canada ,but we couldn't afford the trip and then moving over. We ended up in Spain, bought land 30000m2 , not small in south of Spain, we built our houses ourselves many years , a long story ...we ,like you , got into the crisis 2008,lost a lot of money! Like you said , you don't like to think about it , we skipped these years out of the calendar!! Since 2014 we live fix the whole year on a campsite, and have never been happier, reduced all we have to a minimum, and bought a campervan to escape in the nature now and then as the 2 Bushcraft Oldies. We have always been a kind of prepper and bushcrafter in our minds ,and now with all the Spanish restrictions and quarantine, we really are prepared and we don't have to go shopping frequently like most people. That's why we are so happy to follow you , learning a lot and giving us confidence to carry on even at a higher age! Stay healthy all of you!

Shawn, when I first stumbled across your other KZbin channel (My SelfReliance) many months ago, one of the things that first struck me about your motivation was the impact that the 2008 financial crisis had on you, particularly when it combined with some of the other business-related challenges that you faced. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, you developed a plan for your future based upon priorities that were clearly the product of measured self-reflection. You managed to include in that plan scope to share your experience with others and, in so doing, achieved (what I imagine) were two specific goals. First, you shared your experience, your knowledge, your trials and tribulations, and your successes and failures with others. You contributed to what I would characterize as collective learning and education. But, I suspect you were also mindful of the need not only with the natural sustainability of your environment, but your own financial sustainability. I assume that you are able to obtain some revenue from your KZbin channel. And I don’t mention this in a negative fashion. You greatly deserve revenue from your efforts. The production value in your videos is extremely high, and has been from the very beginning. And the popularity of your videos (and, presumably, revenue consistent with that popularity) is a testament to the quality of what you produce. You do so in a positive fashion. You do not generate views (and, presumably, revenue) through negative commentary, cheesy ‘clickbait’ or unnecessary controversy. In fact, you go out of your way to avoid courting controversy or generating conflict. That is something to be admired in an environment (KZbin videos, generally) that can quickly and unnecessarily descend to toxicity. You provide both education to those who are interested as well as enjoyment from those of us who appreciate nature and wish that we could spend more time as you do. Certainly, my life goals, and the service that I provide to my community, would not permit me to follow a path similar to yours. But I greatly appreciate what you do, and what you share with us. Many of us are concerned about the legacy that we leave, even if it is only a small legacy. Your legacy will transcend your own family (the legacy that we all leave) and will include a positive contribution not only to Canadian society, but your world-wide audience that you have acquired. That is no small feat for anyone. Well done, and thank you for your continued efforts. Best of luck going into the Spring. And I look forward to your continuing contribution to the positive side of KZbin.

VERY WELL SAID! I appreciate your honest observation of Mr. Shawn James. I have followed him for 3-4 yrs (at the time he began clearing his land for the cabin). He has never changed his ways of doing things, way of living, attitude, humbleness, or way of life. He is the real deal! Every now & then he gets a troll on here who likes to bash him & he never acknowledges him (which also speaks to his character) & has always stayed humble. You are direct, honest, & you have an admirable way with words so your assessment is right on. It does my heart good to know there are still admirable people like Shawn & you in this world. I shall leave it with hope you guys can teach the world regarding these truths & ethics. Thank you sir. God bless you also.

@dongray9852

I agree, 5% may be generous. I refer to the esoteric skills Shawn has demonstrated in the creation of this place. He's quite simply the best primitive carpenter I've ever seen. I certainly could not do half as well in quality construction. However, I do feel as though I might be able to survive there, I'm in my mid 60s but pretty healthy and have been a lifelong hunter/outdoorsman (especially in my much younger days). Given my hunting rifle, a .22 pistol (the less said about my bowhunting capabilities the better) and some fundamental fishing gear I could probably subsist in the environment Shawn has created, but it would be subsistence... it'd be a question of how long I could endure a tent. He isn't surviving... he's in his element. My attempt would be far less skillfully manifested. But that's why it's so inspiring - it's great to see what COULD be done ideally. The forest kitchen rawks! I want one. Thank you Shawn, Mrs Shawn, Cali, and the girls too! Y'all make me smile.

Shawn, Glad you are all at peace and enjoying life. Paradoxically, I find myself going into self isolation for the next 12 weeks, but feeling much like you. Our 2008- 2010 experience sort of ran in parallel from what I can gather. But, that fraught, complicated time has brought me to a more stable, simple and contented place. It just so happens that the success of the past was such that when it was all ripped away there was in truth a lot left behind to enjoy. I had never appreciated less is more and got blinkered into more being better. A life lesson that you have to experience to understand. I don't kid myself that this can be the same for everyone and consider myself fortunate and in an uncommon situation. Having always been a cook and having been in the food business I have always kept a store. Immediate shortages touch us not and we replenish as and when we can. In the interim we cut with the cloth we've got. I live in a rural town of say 9000, have an allotment and 3 chickens in the back yard. On the one hand, recreational, but in the current climate making small but significant differences. What I would say to anyone is have a go at the level you can achieve. I raked through all my old seed packets yesterday for window cill friendly fodder. We will have cress in 6 days! Lettuce and herbs. Just do it. Wishing you, your family and all who read this well. Personally iv seen 50 bear but had 2 experience with aggressive bears, that will check your man hood...Lol..... Both times I was mock charge several times .A couple of thing to watch for is them snapping there jaws repeatedly, an walking slightly side ways.2 tells there little pissed at you......Fortunately I had a gun an luckily for the bear I held off from killing ..Anyways where bells an put them on your dog's as well..An remember leave the bush cleaner than you experienced it...…. .

I am well aware of the negative feed back from those who think with small mindedness. The most prevalent one is: "That kind of stuff will never happen to ME', and they reject the idea of preparing for the bad time. I tell people preparedness is not expecting something bad to happen, but except the fact that it does happen and be ready to live for 90 days as if it is 1800. Now all the naysayers that I tried to warn are facing the bad times ill prepared. I would have liked a life like yours (still do), but I never quite was able to pull it off. I've made as many preparations as I could and although I'm 73 I can and will survive the bad times, partly thanks to skills I've picked up from you. Thanks again. ;-)

Love hearing your thoughts and seeing what you get up to out there in the wilderness. I wanted to ask for your wife's bread recipe because her loaves always seem light and fluffy. I cannot afford to move but have decided during my 12 week isolation to become a bit more self sufficient. I have a mini greenhouse and a raised bed complete with a polytunnel top so that I can grow fruit and some vegetables. I live close to countryside on the edge of the city and have found places to forage for apples, pears, sweet chestnuts, wild raspberries, blackberries and crab apples. I won't be raiding gardens but areas where the trees were planted between the wars that no-one bothers with. Hoping that you and your family stay safe and well.

Shawn, If I may leave some advice... I think the best plan of action for you is to increase your knowledge of the edible plant/fungi species around your area, and not focus as much on farming. My knowledge of foraging does not go beyond the New England Area, but It's likely that you'll find many similar species in Ontario as I do here. Not only will this increase your connection to the landscape, but it will bring a greater meaning of self-reliance to your experience. -Wishing you the best and take care.

Hi Shawn, Even before all this virus stuff happened I was wanting to have an off grid lifestyle, now I'm more sure of that than I was before. I don't know if a communal thing would be fitting for me, and also for my wife, I'm more inclined to have my own piece of property as you have, and make it my own for my family. In this situation right now, the last thing I would want would be to be in a commune with others as that is a perfect way to spread any kind of sickness around. I would prefer to just have my family there. Have chickens, maybe goats. a huge veggie garden, maybe some fruit trees or a small orchard. Nothing fancy, just comfortable and safe, free from the stresses of living and always owing. -Matt

I do love the fact that you can build yourself a home without having to go by the standards of building reqs there in Canada! Here in Sweden it´s totally impossible to build even a very small hunting cabin on your property without all kinds of permits that costs alot... So in that regards I always had a good eye for Canada that lets people follow their dreams and don´t hinder everything with their total control over every bit in a humans life! Love both your channels and I will continue live through them and dream on! Take care and see you on the channels! Best regards Lars, Sweden

I remember asking an old timer what it was like living in New Brunswick during the depression. He said it didn't affect him much. They hunted and fished as usual. More people are returning to the land is what I am seeing down there. There are more homesteads with chickens running around and a few places where they have beef cattle on their property. No doubt the economic hit that the world is going to take in the coming months could very well have long lasting consequences. All we can do for now is self-isolate and wait and see what the economies do.

This kind of life is also A LOT of work! I've lived the cabin life for 20yrs, alone and it is not for the faint of heart or lazy people. Just cutting, hauling and chopping your daily wood supply is enough to make some people give up. Hauling water takes it to a new level. Like modern conveniences and can't live without running water or don't want to use an outhouse? Forget the dream then. And if you're in an area where it gets really cold (-30 or -40C), you need to be prepared because things can go wrong fast. If you have livestock on top of that, it's even more work and money. Raising animals and running a small homestead isn't cheap or free. There's initial investments and then care & feeding of animals, fencing, maintenance of equipment, fuel costs, etc. It's not always all it's cracked up to be, definitely do your research. Then do some more. Talk to people living in an area you are interested, go visit them, have honest discussions about what their life is like.

If it weren't for my health issues, I would follow your path, for sure. Given the situation now, there is no traffic, things are eerily quiet. My intentions were to buy a condo and perhaps lakeside or beside the ocean, but given the circumstances that has even changed. Maybe I should consider a rural area that has fewer restrictions. It's food for thought. I lost a lot in the stock market, but I know that is temporary when things normalize again, but I have had to live off of my hard earned cash. While I live in the St. Louis metro area to the west, I was thinking of relocating around Fort Myers, FL. I dunno know. There's plenty of land in MO if given the right circumstances. I just can't do what you have been able to accomplish. Stay well...that's the most important thing! At least you are living my dream.

Mom Use to say that, everything happens for a reason and that we already know the future subconsciously. So when you find yourself doing things differently? Things you have never done before? Its to help you prepare for the things to come. My mom was usually right! I found myself buying things I would have never bought like a generator, fishing rods and survival gear. Tents and hot tent stoves I learned to bake from scratch and I hate baking until now. Then I watched your show and others and found myself out in the yard axing up a cord of wood and I live in a city! I know this will all come in handy, even all the buckets of flour I bought are already coming to good use. I dont need to go to the store for bread. Watching your videos helped me a lot. I learned that if you can survive? So can I. lol Thank you for all the great and most helpful videos. PS we have a park with many Maple trees I will be tapping next year. lol I have learned quite a bit from you so thank you and give Cali a hug for me. Stay safe.

For my wife and I (no kids) the biggest thing was becoming mortgage free (about 7yrs ago now). We had made a conscious decision to reduce our mortgage due to work instability on the horizon, but then when we built up some momentum and the instability kept being distant we started aiming towards paying it off completely. We sacrificed a lot to make it happen. But even then we were only able to do it because we'd bought just before the market went skywards. That combination of timing and effort and luck has affected us a lot. For anyone starting off now, jeesh, I don't know how they cope.
