Shawn .....I'm 75, I'm a retired architect, yet in my life, I've left the main stream many times doing my own projects and various adventures by which many thought I was nuts. Example, I'm presently residing in Southeast Asia causing most friends to be so damn angry, they refuse to communicate. I often reflect how most wish for me to have lived life as they wanted, or conformed to their way of thinking or just plan dang critical ...and all I can think is, they need to live their life and allow me to live my life. Viewers or friends who are critical are NOT walking in your shoes. WE can't go through life pleasing others, they're never satisfied and it makes us miserable. Personally, I think what your doing is all GREAT ...just spread some hay over that exposed earth to help stop the erosion & the grass will grow more quickly. Hang in there Shawn, your doing fine. Thanks so very much for allowing all of us to watch your progress over the years. Blessings

I'm a female, 76. We used to own a family cottage but I was forced to sell. Family matters. Rather than have the money sit in the bank, I bought what I could afford, a 10 acre lot with mobile home. A well and satellite connection. I hadn't planned to spend much time here but do now because of the virus. My friends think I lost it. In my younger years I lived in the Ottawa valley with hippies who have since passed on. I think my older friends are nuts for living in the city with all that virus going on. Everyone should do what they feel like as long as no one gets hurt. This is my lifestyle. Me and my 2 dogs. My family do the 5 hour drive once every 2 weeks to make sure I have food supply and am o.k. Do what you feel like doing, live your life to your enjoyment and not for others.

I find it ironic that people are watching a guy on their computer, who's making videos with his digital camera and editing them on his computer, build is "self reliant" lifestyle and complaining that it's not "natural" enough. Shawn has always been completely open about the practical limitations of self reliance, and is working to maximizing his within the context of a modern interpretation of that goal. I think the balance is as good as is practicable and I've learned a great deal from watching him. I've enjoyed being brought along for the experience. Good riddance to those who think they could do better...from the parents basement. Thanks Shawn and keep up the good work. It's been inspiring.

That's real close to what I was going to comment. I helped my dad build a log cabin in the early to mid 80s. He did as much as he could but the foundation work (it was built on a slab) was done in trade for work out of his 9-5 job (owner-operator of Mid-State Tire and Auto) He was also a machinist, welder, fabricator, blacksmith, gunsmith, etc. I cant do half what he accomplished. How someone can sit in front of a screen and criticize Shawn is beyond me! Let them go into the woods and live off the land. No power tools, 4-wheeler, Generator, chainsaw, etc. and do better! It cant be done. Not 100%. No way.

I would like to concur with the sentiments others have commented. My husband and I are long-time subscribers and watch every week. I even bought him one of your Cabin Life t-shirts for his birthday a couple weeks ago. The cool part about what you do is live your dream, but the operative word there is "your." You owe no apologies to anyone for how or what you do. It's up to you. As a professional historian who specializes in the European Middle Ages, where virtually everyone lived the type of localized, self-sufficient, agricultural life you are trying to create, I'd like to say a few things as they relate to what you seem to be apologizing for and/or trying to do.... First, I think you are using the terms "mountain man" and "homesteader" interchangeably, which is somewhat incongruent. Those are two different types of lifestyle. In the tradition of the American West at least (and I'm assuming things were similar in Canada?) a mountain man lived a pretty solitary, unsettled lifestyle, mainly living off the land through hunting, fishing, trading, trapping, etc. Whereas homesteaders created small settled farms and lived on agricultural produce they grew and traded with others. I believe you are trying to homestead. Second, as part of a traditional homestead experience in the past you'd find almost no one who wasn't relying on domesticated animals such as horses or mules (for labor and transport), cows (for meat, milk, and manure), or sheep/goats for the same, etc. I know you have had chickens, but the issue you bring up in this episode about not being able to potentially generate enough daily calories on your own is one partially born out of a choice not to include these animals and attempting to rely solely on hunting, fishing, trapping, and gardening. Having to supplement food supplies by going into town is not a failure. Even Dick Proenneke got a periodic visit from the "grocery store." Third, you seem to apologize for needing the neighbor's help. Here is another area where the modern romantic idea of living off the land diverts from how people who actually did so in the past functioned: Community is a necessity for survival. Period. Almost NO ONE dreamed of living in isolation free from needing the assistance of others. There is independence and then there is misguided independence, and it was simply tantamount to suicide to try and live without the help of others. Trading goods, helping each other through borrowing and exchanging labor, and even providing companionship because this type of life even for the most private of people can quickly become one of drudgery and loneliness, were all elements that enabled everyone to survive throughout essentially all of human history. Tribes were developed for a reason. Lastly, I think it's inescapable for the times in which we live that you will end up living a hybrid life of sorts. We live in the modern era and escape from the rat race and self-sufficiency is a dream and/or fantasy for many. You provide a small window into that escape for legions of people who will never achieve what you have. Again, the best part about watching you (other than Cali!) is that you are doing your own thing. Very few people get to do that, so we understand the limitations that living in a modern, post-industrial context might impose on how you achieve your dream. As I always caution my students, "historical context matters." You live now, not in the 19th century or the Middle Ages, and so it's perfectly okay to live in accordance with one's time. Just put your own twist on it and live your best life. I think THAT is the most important example you hold up for others, not whether you are getting the nit-picky details correct. Keep livin' the dream. "Authenticity" is what you make it.

I agree that back in the day, your neighbours were in the same boat and you could trade/barter with them. I think it’s not possible to completely be self reliant, but I think you can get pretty close. I’m enjoying the journey

Shawn...i was one of those few who stopped watching your episodes for a year and a bit. Not because i do not believe that what you are doing is lost or that you have lost the plot, its just that i started to get a bit jealous seeing someone with a goal as strong as yours. i will never be able to do what you are doing simply because i live in a country that is crime infested and property like that is worth millions. But then one day my son came to me and started to ask about what it would be like to live a self reliant life in the wilderness, tucked away from everything and living off the land. I immediately could refer him to your videos and now i am back catching up on the footage you have made, with my son. See, i see it as what you are doing might not be possible for people like me and my family, but it brought me and my son together watching the dream that is possible in both our hearts. Please do not feel discouraged and do not listen to negativity. Reading the stuff what most of your subscribers are saying is a blessing to see that we as a society need your footage to keep our self believing in a life where we can escape to..even if it is just you sitting looking a fire for 40min, My son constantly asks me when we can watch "The mountain" man videos again!! As a non native speaker of the english language I'm not so familiar with the difference between the words envious and jealous, but maybe jealous is a more negative word of the two? Anyway I'm also a little envious about what Shawn is doing, but I'm definitely not nonindulgent toward him and what he does! And that's a big difference. He inspires me's and give me good ideas on how to build and other things. I think maybe what Schalk is saying is that it also can hurt if you're for example living in a country where this isn't possible to do or if you have other obstacles that is difficult or maybe impossible to overcome. I of course indulge Shawn in what he''s doing and I think it's a shame he has to move because of nonindulgent and overly childish neighbours and other things. I would have loved to see him develop this place to what he wanted. It hurts to see him spending about 6-7 % of his lifetime on a project he has to walk out on. Although it doesn't seem he's too depressed over it, and he has probably gained a lot of experience during these years that he can apply on his new project.

I disagree. If someone is doing this just for their own benefit then they wouldn't need a monetized youtube channel or even a channel at all. Your audience is your customer. Their attention and their time and their opinion is worth money. If you don't care about your customer then what is the point for the customer. Btw the old adage 'Sticks and stones..' you quote is incorrect. It ends with '... but names can never hurt me. Which is a different meaning than 'words'. Yes, our interactions should be kinder but falling into the PC world of trigger words and words are violence is a slippery slope to stay away from. When did we all become so sensitive that we want to avoid the reality of meanings.

Dude, I can't imagine anyone having issue with what you're doing. There's no rules. I have always felt like you're simply graciously sharing your journey to discover a life/life style that fulfills your desire to feel one with the world (natural and civilized). I sometimes scratch my head trying to understand other people who say, "I'm not living by their rules" and then they judge others by some doctrine associated with their beliefs which is really just another set of rules - seems hypocritical and for me at least - anyone trying to impose their belief system on me is at somewhat offensive (e.g. I'm not leaving one doctrine master for another...). Your videos are great, your philosophy is fantastic and your pragmatic acceptance that not everything modern is evil is reassuring. In the real world, there's no absolutes. Satisfaction is directly related to finding one's own "right" balance and leaving judgement of others behind. Thank you. I've been sharing your videos (on both channels) with my kids since the beginning and they are meaningful.

Bottom line is that I've learned a lot watching Sean's videos. I'd bet good money that the same type of person who judges him as less than an "ideal" homesteader wouldn't last 2 weeks trying to build their own place, let alone put in all of the work Sean has done over the last 4 years to get to the point where he is now. Just watching him cut down trees, logging, stumping, building up those mounds of earth, scrounging for loam, etc. etc. to build up a garden that will be fertile enough to give him good crops - Geez Louise - that exhausts me. And I haven't lifted a finger! At 68, I know how much it takes to get out there when it's 90 degrees F and 67 dew point and it feels like you're in a sauna in the middle of the Sahara Desert that I am exhausted after cutting a front lawn that is maybe 70 feet x 20 feet. Sean isn't anywhere near my age, but it's not going to get any damn easier for him. Absolutely, dreams or hope instantly changes but sometimes so subtle that one can't feel "when did it change." And yes, never give up. As long as we have life, live. This being said, cherish time spent and be cognizant of your dreams and do not put off what you can do today. "Next Year" can be viscous. I agree that I was amazed in the beginning, a man building a homestead with his own hands using traditional methods from materials from the land. These were the wonderful times, in the beginning. No disrespect to the later videos, but the initial videos were just wonderful in a simple way. I am a very philosophical person so I can appreciate his later videos and the spin-off of Shawn James. But is just doesn't compare with the genuine and fresh beginnings, and this is no fault of Shawn; just his journey which is ever evolving. Godliness bless...

In my ancestry, I have a true Mountain Man, John Coulter (sometimes spelled Colter). He was the first white man to discover the Yellowstone area, which on the earliest maps is called "Coulter's Hell". He was one of the first Mountain Men in what has become the USA, and he was not entirely self-sufficient. He had to buy food supplies now and then, though he would live off trapping and fishing in winter, with the staples he had laid up in advance, and in the Spring he made his way to the nearest fort or trading post and traded furs for more staples when he ran low. John Coulter was one of the youngest on the Lewis & Clark expedition to go from St. Lewis to find a way through the Rocky Mountains and eventually to the Pacific Ocean. This was in the very earliest of the 1800s, and no one had yet found a route. It was considered a very dangerous quest. He is my favorite ancestor and was greatly respected in his day as a man of his word, of good and steady character, brave, loyal, and independent. He was an excellent boatman, fisherman, hunter and trapper. You remind me of him. I think what I admire most about what you are doing, and have already done, is that as things have changed, you have stayed true to your dream and made what modifications you needed to make without ever giving up the dream. Adding gardens and a pond--what "abandoning" is this to becoming ever more self reliant? It isn't abandoning at all, but increasing the dream. You have my 100% respect and admiration. I'm a long time subscriber and am not going anywhere. You post, I watch. I only wish I had been lucky enough to find a man of your character, integrity, and dreams to make a life with, doing what you are. Your wife and family are lucky to have you.

For me, (the only one I can really speak for), life can be difficult, it's often hard to be a human being and especially in these times I seek out things that simply feel good to me and help me remember those things I really find valuable. That is one reason why I look forward to your videos. If I spend too much time on KZbin I get upset by the arguing and fighting and the great divisions and the political upheaval. The unfairness and the despair that sometimes seems so overwhelming can squeeze the joy for life right out of me. But when I come to your channel I feel better. I like that what you are doing is something we all can enjoy, regardless of our political leanings. You represent a core dream that many people have about being in a place where nature is a direct part of your life. That at night you can see the stars, you can hear the birds, you can smell wood smoke and pine and fresh water and I bet the inside of your log home smells good to. Each day you can build something, create something. Those things are dreams. When I used to sit in a cubicle all day long, my mind would slip off to a place where I could do just what you are doing. My mind would drift off to all the things I wanted to create when I got home, only to discover I was just too tired to do any of them once I got home. When I see one of your videos it is like saying to myself, ok take a breath, sit down, get comfy and watch someone who loves what they do and loves where they are at. So I have to admit that I just really don't care what you decide to do. THat's your business. I figure you have your vision, you have your dream, you have your reasons. I just like to watch it come about.

Shawn I have watched from the beginning and feel you are on target with what I thought you would accomplish. The reality is that you have to use some technology or methods that are available to you. You are living as self reliant as is possible. Also you will be able to continue to operate longer the older you get if you set it up with some very basic technology to assist you. I for one never thought you would live like Grizzly Adams 😃 You are far more self reliant than most of us in a responsible way. Great job!

people are unrealistic. if you moved there and only had a cabin you would have to work outside to keep it going. Its impossible to live completely off grid with just a cabin unless you are willing to practically go naked because you will always have needs. Im sure people have no idea how to make boots etc. You do what you have to do to feed and clothe yourselves which means clearing land for gardens etc. So do what you have to do to make a go of it and they can get over it. My uncle had a self supporting farm years ago but they still had to have income for necessities they couldnt provide for themselves. He sold cream from his cows for that.

Well I know several Trustifarians....living off 9ld family money....they keep the 100s and 20s hidden under the soap...drive rusted out cars with 4wd....have long dreads and chickens in the yard....always have plenty of food and pay their taxes on time...because of this nice pad of stocks and bonds and cash in their accounts.. Haha

I had started out thinking you were working towards the wilderness mountain man lifestyle. I have been xtreamly impressed all along the way!! I admire what you have done and am trying to work towards much of the same. I did expect different at first but I have never been disappointed! You're an inspiration, please don't stop what you're doing!! You know your needs better than anyone!

This is your life and your dream so live it to your best. You have done an amazing transformation and the pandemic put everyone's priorities into perspective. Being self reliant for food and basic amenities is a priority because we have all witnessed how quickly our security can be taken away.

Wow, even Mennonites have a huge community where they rely on each other for surviving....you can not do this alone and have self sufficiancy, thats a pipe dream.... anyone who is disappointed in their expectations from you are not in reality. Blessings from Waterloo!

Some don't like that reality is part of any dream and honestly the best part because once you learn what it really takes you can set about getting it done. You've helped more than you've discouraged by simple showing the truth and fact that all dreams have a price. It's whether or not a man can face that and move past it, instead of simply giving up because it seems to hard or impossible. If anyone who's watched your journey and decided it just seems to hard or they can't have all they envisioned for free, honestly my friend you've probably saved their life...

Humans are not really capable of living alone. The clothes you wear, the tools you use, the guns for hunting, etc etc etc etc ......are al made by other people. So if someone complains, or is disappointed that you aren't, they're just clued out. To me, the goal is to be as self sufficient as possible, while remaining part of a community. That's my eventual plan anyway

A little cynical but I think I can see past that and agree with the fundamentals of what you're saying.

I'm still following and loving your dream! I stayed on my son's off grid (in-progress) homestead over this past winter and I can tell you that even though you men want to do everything yourselves, there are times when you will need help with a project. Especially ones like your neighbor digging out your pond for you! Please don't let people who have no idea of what you're going through discourage you. I think you have done such an awesome job so far and you will continue to do so. Heck, you're not even related to me and I'm very proud of you and what you've accomplished over the last couple of years! Keep on keeping on! Take care & God bless you and your family!

Shawn: No criticism here! All sounds like maturity, growth, realism and a dedication to happiness, joy and freedom. The "mountain man" thing is not much available to us with 8 billion people on the planet! Full time hunting and gathering is limited. You are not obligated to justify yourself by any means, but I do like to hear your self analysis. Young men have different dreams than older men, and with good reason! For one thing they do not usually envision attachment to a family as definitive. You are living my dream I had when I was young. And now I watch you to see a life I could have lived but did not live. That statement is not as regretful as it sounds. It is gratifying to see you go for this and to achieve it. As you have lost some viewers who live in the fantasy of mountain men (not criticizing them--I was young once, and had a friend that never quite gave up on the archetype) so be it. You will gain others. I like the show better than ever. Look forward to seeing some expressions of perma-culture in terms of fruit trees and things. It will be interesting to see how you pursue some of that. Not sure what is possible in your climate. Kudos, and keep it up.
