Back in the early 80’s, a fellow infantry Marine who was a stud, was running and exercising like crazy. We asked him what was up and he said he wanted to go Recon. that sounds like a POS 1stSgt... when I was a 1SG and CSM, I made sure that any aspirations from my soldiers were realistic and gave them opportunity to succeed with support. I also pushed back against BDE and DIV whenever they tried to say "no". I ran a DS BN, and had a soldier who was on meds for PTSD. DIV tried to say "no" immediately. I talked to the Commandant of USADSA. They had a medical officer on staff. Put him on orders to go, and she evaluated him as having never had proper treatment (thanks, VA). Got him treatment, and the Commandant told DIV he was clear to attend. DIV was freaking out ... "but, but... we thought..." hahahaha. Guess what? That soldier not only went on to be an awesome DS, but he eventually became an instructor at USADSA.

My biggest mistake was telling my inner circle my goals actually. No one will put you down as hard as your parents will. As if my constant over thinking wasn't enough, there was always a well meaning "I want what's best for you" from them followed by a story about someone their cousin's sister knew who just didn't make it or a story about how horrible that thing actually was. Now I'm 20 and I've got a few extra miles to walk on that path.

There are people who will sabotage you, sometimes for seemingly no reason at all. You don't know what's going on in other peoples heads. And you would be shocked at how many people, out there who will hate others for some of the most stupidest & absurd reason's and / or take pride in ruining other people's lives & plans, just for the mere pleasure of doing so. Most people can't really wrap thier head around that, because we;re not like that, and most of our friends are generally not like that, but you will run into people like that, once in a while, they will even be your "friend".

It’s definitely not to back out when my dream in right in front of my face. To be honest I’ve always had that “sit down and watch me” mentality but I’ve started to realize how much I love the feeling of being doubted. At a young 69 years I’m far beyond anything SF or the desire for said. That wouldn’t stop me from defending, and I train for that almost daily, but stumbling on FNG Academy reinforces what I’ve told my kids and young people about desire and goals. It doesn’t matter what it may be: Keep it real 100; keep it in your closest inner circle. Yes: people do not want to see you succeed - in almost all avenues of life. Sounds pessimistic but unfortunately it is true, especially in those careers that get close to the public eye or the scrutiny of your peers.

Word of advice to individuals looking for a special operations contract. Find a recruiter that shares your drive. From my experience, these are the minority. If an NCO, even a combat veteran, puts you down real hard with statements that have no backing, move on. If an NCO tells you the harsh evidence-based truths to the path of special operations or blantantly calls out where you are lacking, that is just someone leveling with you. But understand that recruiters are human and they may be sheer assholes and/or losers. Do not take what they say as gospel. Research yourself and come to the desk with knowledge, and always be willing to walk away.

This really struck home for me, because I just realized how guilty of it I was, I'm in the middle of trying to become a TACP, and quite a few people who had tried to transfer to the same unit I'm trying to go to now were telling me about how I didn't even stand a chance because I wore glasses and there was depth perception requirements and whatnot, and it clicked to me that I'd already be exposed to it! That's not to say I have any intention of letting anyone but medical tell me I can't do it, but this is a very real thing, and it started to occur to me how important it is that only people who "need to know" what I'm planning, should know!

I’m glad I was a Ranger Qualified mechanic before going to SFAS. After my 3rd Ranger Batt time, I was sent to leg land. So when my leaders saw me rucking, at the gym and doing extra PT they just thought, oh there goes Mr. 300, or Ranger Rick at it again….till one day I got my orders for selection and then you hear it… You’ll be back right here with us. Well I said, I’ll be back in about 23 days to start turning in my CIF. I’m glad I went SF, because looking back now, I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. All the arthritis I have now was well worth it. I laughed to myself, when you said someone told you to go see the outgoing SGM….before you finished the story, I said….well that was a bad idea. I was active duty AF in 1986 and the U.S. Marshals came down to do some recruiting. I made up my mind right then that i would be in the USMS. It took me until 1998 to get hired by the Marshals. The only one I ever shared that goal with was my off duty supervisor (wife). That’s the way to go, keep your cards close to the vest.

I feel this. 18x almost 10 years ago got selected but didnt complete the course. Never let the dream go and I'm trying to go back soon. Be almost 40 at graduation but luckily I have a solid teammate who is prepping to go to so we hold eachother accountable

Loose lips sink ships. I get you bro. Being former USN SAR I get it. Now as a commercial corporate real estate advisor, I’ve learned to never discuss my transactional pursuits. My industry is hyper competitive as is SO (although I have no context there). Loose lips sink ships.

Great advise Buck! I’m the same way mainly because I would genuinely be happy for anyone about their plans and/or goals🤷🏾.

Congratulations man. Though I don't know you personally, if you are what I believe you to be. You will make an excellent father. You have been through much, I do not doubt that you will do for your child what was not done for you. I hope I am not out of line, but I am proud of you.

This came at a perfect time for me!! I am at a critical point in making my dreams happen and I’m getting the doubters. I have been out of the military for many years and you are helping me as well! Thank you!

Didn’t take me long to like the video and I don’t think I need to watch the rest of it but I will anyway. You had me at “keep your big plans to yourself”
