Yes, bad idea to use blankets, they freeze and cat will freeze as well. Use stray or line with mylar

Am in South Florida and about to make a little Kitty Kamp in the woods for a mother kitty and her only kitten that's survived the outdoors. Today it was 84 degrees, tomorrow morning it'll be 43 (tell me about it!) so I'm thinking of placing a large dog crate lined with a thick blanket and some towels plus a tarp over the crate. Watching this video made me realize that so many cats live in frigid temperatures, wow, I had no idea but am still going to try to provide some warmth and comfort during this peculiar Christmas cold spell. I live in the UK and it doesn't get too cold. We have a stray who comes for his dinner twice a day. If we did get a very cold spell I would let him in. This is how we got most of our cats by strays moving in. My cat is not keen on the stray so not to cause him anxiety we haven't let the stray move in. We call him Stewie

Blankets and pillows wll get wet and will freeze making the cat colder and more susceptible to hypothermia . Please use straw instead to help keep cats warm. Straw stays dry and cats will be able to bury themselves under it to keep warm if you put a generous amount in their shelter. DO NOT USE HAY..hay holds onto moisture and will mold.

@@FactsaboutCatsVideos Yup, you said at 0:33 that "it would be best if you also got blankets or pillows to keep the cats warm"! You also say at 1:43 "if you're worried about the blankets keeping moisture, you shouldn't be" and then talk about how cats will not bring in a bunch of moisture (as if they have any choice if they get soaked if caught in the rain), ignoring that sometimes shelter roofs can leak and water can splash up into the hole in the shelter if it's raining hard. You also state at 1:58 that you never had a PERSONAL problem with it getting wet inside of the shelter with the blanket, and then mention using straw as an alternative to blankets (and you specify straw instead of hay, which is good!). My biggest problem with that is that some outside cats are on the older side and can accidentally go to the bathroom in a shelter, and a blanket would be a much larger hassle to clean than replaceable straw. Also, if a cat is particularly destructive, a blanket can become a fatal swallowing risk if it gets torn into any type of string. Straw, an animal centric type of bedding, is a much better option than blankets and pillows, a human centric type of bedding. I do appreciate that you're trying to help, but sometimes we have to keep the worst case scenario in mind. 🐈💕

I have a question for anyone who can help. Is it ok to put the warming pet mats in wooden cat houses with the straw over it, & place a pet blanket in there as well? Also, there's an old SUV in our yard where I typically feed them & they like to hang out under it. I have an old fur throw there now so they aren't just touching the ground. Is this ok or is there something better I can use to keep them comfy & warm as it gets colder? It gets very dirty & is difficult to clean. Do I need something else or maybe I could put some straw on top of the throw?

@@keyountisejones4071 How well insulated are the houses? You want to stay away from blankets as they can get wet and will hold onto the cold making the cats cold.. If the houses are not insulated and it is just a wooded box you can add flat thick styrofoam sheets to the inside ( or outside) walls and ceiling to help keep the cold out. Use Gorilla brand duct tape (instead of plain duct tape) works better and will hold the styrofoam in place together in the cold weather. Once the houses are insulated with styrofoam .. make sure there is a smaller entrance hole 6-8 inches they can crawl in to get inside (do not leave a wide opening). A smaller entrance will mean it will stay warmer inside. Stuff the inside of the house with straw. Do not use hay or it will get wet and mold.They will be able to bury themselves to stay warm. I would be careful putting anything electric near flammable stuff like straw. Maybe make them a separate house with just the mats they can go inside and lay on the mats. Use straw under where you feed them so the ground isn't as cold when they are eating... you can pile lots so if they want to hang out and lay on top the ground won't be cold.

@@KZbinStalker I have one 2 level wooden house, & another wooden one with a balcony. I put the self warming mats that reflect body heat so there's no electricity.I placed about a half inch layer of straw on top of the mats. We did put some type of insulation on the wall & floor of one of them. The one with the balcony is just packed with a mat & straw. Under the SUV I will put down some straw then. Should I remove the faux fur throw I keep under there & use the straw only?? It does get dirty & soggy but it seemed to give them comfort.

Hi, I have a feral cat that stays in my garage. She will not come in the house no matter how I try. I made her shelters with straw in it but she won’t go in them. She prefers to dig in the Bale of straw and staying there will that keep her just as warm

See if you can hide them behind bushes. Or if you are on tye first floor, put them.on your patio. Thats all I can think of. I wish people didn't suck so much.

Camouflage shelters with spray paint in native colors. Try to stash them under bushes. If possible, use branches to further hide it. You can put food or catnip near the entrance so the cat can still find it. It doesn’t need to be easily visible. Collect feeding materials (cans, bowls) to keep from attracting notice. Leave food and water under bushes if you don’t have a patio. If you think it’s possible, try to educate your neighbors. Fed cats don’t rip up garbage and TNR’d cats don’t spray and fight less. Killing the cats only leads to others taking their place. Hope that helps!

Feral cats will not go into these types of house. I feed feral cats near car wash. There no way to have a heat food bowl or house. They sleep in the woods and tree stumps.

They definitely do use them. I'm working on my 2nd house for a stray cat that's befriended me. The other one I placed outside the neighborhood and a moma and her kittens are using it

The reason is one they are at a car wash. People have stolen their food bowls and water bowls. If you this type of shelter out someone will steal it. If you care for feral near your house it different
