Apparently, you didn't see in the manual that it's possible to play on several different difficulties. On the easiest difficulty, the game takes longer, but this mode is aimed at families playing with children. Keep The Heroes Out is an extremely fun game with a good learning curve. A huge success around here.

This is a very fun game! As big coop fans in our house, we like the puzzle presented by the various scenarios and the different approaches you can take with the various monsters you choose to control for the mission. Plus it’s fun to see the heroes as the bad guys for once! We find the game play moves along quickly once you know how to play, and the deck building options offer some nice improvements to your basic skillset.

We love this game! Keep the heroes out is one of my families most played games. You are right that the turns can be a little long but with more plays everyone gets faster. Also with my kids we typically play a half game as there is a natural stopping point half way.
