I had my solo flight last month in a 172. Before I went for the solo, my instructor told me to always fly the plane no matter what. If the window opens, if the door opens, doesn't matter, fly the plane to pattern height, trim and correct the problem once safe. I had a questionable landing on my first go around, so I aborted the landing. When I applied full power, the seat pin released and I was a LOT further back than I wanted to be at the controls...my toes barely reached the pedals. I followed my instructor's advice and flew the plane no matter what. Once at pattern height, I trimmed, corrected the seat issue, flew the pattern and landed without incident. That one little advice the instructor gave me, probably saved my life.

My dad and my instructor has always said this! You block out everything else and just fly. My solo was kinda iffy, I think I needed more go around practice before he let me loose, but I didn't die so. I went around on my second go, but I didn't want to put the flaps up too quickly, I hadn't learned the timing. So my airspeed went down to 55 in a split second, I just immediately nosed down and finally got my first notch out. And so on.

Amy Ann He’s really awesome. We have a blast flying together. I’m sorry you lost your dad young. I’m very lucky to be able to fly with him!

Ann my father was my inspiration for flying. When I was young we had a 172 that we would tool around in but I never took up flying. When my parents passed, I inherited some money and invested in something that would make my father proud . I purchased a Beech Sundowner at the age of 49 and now 2 years later I’m working on my commercial rating and have upgraded planes to a Commander. All of this because of my father’s influence. Josh, I’d give the world to fly with my dad just 1 more time.

@@kevinmullins1334 Sometimes we don't realize the value in things like that until it's gone. I too wished I had paid attention to my dad when he tried to teach me the guitar, but I just wasn't interested. I've learned now, but severely regret not listening and spending that extra time with him. So I can empathize with you. It sounds like your father would be so proud of you for doing what you're doing and I hope that can bring you some happiness.

I also would love to see my dad again. I know this will be hard to believe because I didn't believe when I first heard, but we can see our dead friends and family again. They will be brought back right here on earth as humans, not in heaven. Please check out the evidence here: www.jw.org/en/library/magazines/wp20150801/ Peace!

Great series Josh ! I said it before, I lost my best friend (my dad) a year ago. We did everything together, as I was growing up in West Texas. He was a songwriter and we eventually came to Nashville. But, I cherish every minute we had and would give anything for one more. Very enthused when I watched initial Flight Chops video. Great news that you have been included to help spread the message. It’s important that we are all reminded of the many pitfalls which initiate that inevitable “chain of events”. I’ve caught myself thinking ahead & past several flight scenarios incorporating AQP training techniques (always with a grateful smile). I’m available in Charlotte if you’re looking for additional volunteer pilots - plenty of room in my ‘65 C182.

Josh, First and foremost, thank you for sharing your love of aviation and passion for filmmaking. I have been a subscriber for about a year now. I look forward to each new episode and have genuinely enjoyed watching the evolution of Aviation101. I was even more excited to see you team up with Dan Gryder and introduce your viewers to AQP Grassroots. I have dreamed of flying since I was a kid. As a younger man I drove race cars, jumped out perfectly good airplanes and currently enjoyed scuba diving. I am not a pilot, at least not yet and I do feel the sky calling. As excited as I am about wanting to fly, I am constantly reminded of the dangers. I struggle with the current statistics in general aviation. I think for the most part I have been more confused as to why the crash and fatality rate is so high. How do we make GA just as safe as commercial flying? I believe that most of that has been answered with AQP Grassroots movement. I am now seeing that flying can be totally safe with the right training. Now more than anytime in my life I have the resources to take on flying and even purchase an airplane. What has me being so cautious is that at the same time I have more responsibility than any other time in my life. I have a loving wife and a four-year-old daughter to think about. Additionally, I have responsibility as a CEO to my company so the thought of training and become a pilot is taken very seriously. I am 54 and not interested in learning to fly for a new career. My interest in flying is for fun and family trips. I purchased the King School private pilot about a year ago. I did some of the course, however because of some unforeseen issues I have not completed the training. My plan is to first get my medical then complete the written exam so that I have that foundation before flying. When it comes time to begin the flying phase I will select an instructor that is willing to implement the AQP Grassroots into the training curriculum. I believe that getting the PPL is just the beginning of my training. I would like to spend some time training with you, Dan Gryder and Jason Miller. My goal is to be an excellent pilot, to be safe for my family, my work and everyone around me. I am also open for any suggestions on how I should approach training. I live about 20 minutes south of Indianapolis Indiana. Thanks again for all that you do for aviation Josh. Looking forward to seeing your next adventure!

Fantastic video series! This is exactly what GA community needs. Also love how you utilize VFR flight following too! As an Instrument Rated Commercial myself, talking to ATC, filing IFR (even in VMC) has saved my life. Back in 2007, I almost had a mid air with an airplane that was doing aerobatics right the floor of the Kansas City Bravo. Without ATC, I never would have seen him. One hard bank to the left, is why I am able to write this message.

The AQP series' that Dan's been pushing through the KZbin community (100% grateful for that) is aviation gold. I'm very happy to see you involved. Your attention to precision and detail is enviable and I'm sure we'll see some great things in the future. I got called to a stall, spin accident site years ago (I work in oil and gas and the accident site was on our pipeline right-of-way, aka ROW. I''m pretty sure I went into more detail in another post so I'll spare that). It was the most sobering experience I've had in GA. The most surprising was Houston Center asking for me by name during a VOR approach to PSX with my instrument instructor :) That was work related call that ended well. On another note, I flew this weekend. I landed at 5V5, two full stops, rwy 20, in a slight crosswind, N19, rwy 26, in a gusty crosswind (unknown, doesn't report the wind), and KFMN, rwy 25, in a gusty, 6G15 kts crosswind. Spring is coming and fun winds on the mesa top runways are almost here. At N19 I didn't read the wind right and it pushed me over too far and I ended up overshooting the base leg. I rolled it around, let the nose fall

Never really thought about this. Great Stuff, I'm excited to see this series.
