Thank you Brian, your approach to teaching is brilliant. You simply don’t take for granted the students previous knowledge, will fill in the gaps of instruction. You are my absolute go to for clarification and purpose being a self taught guitarist. I’ve never seen this information presented this way in such a practical manner.

I agree 100%. Brian is a great teacher, he explains things well, gives examples, and explains theory better than anyone online, but he comes of as a bit of a curmudgeon. I feel if there were some production changes, he would get many more viewers. Why do I care? I care because Brian is way too good to be a niche channel on KZbin.

Well done, Brian. I’m an old geezer and have adopted a simple and similar approach. (1) Learned the interval numbers for each diatonic box, (2) target the interval number note for the chord number, (3) let my ears fill in the rest. This does require learning enough notes to quickly anchor the pattern but after awhile it becomes automatic. Cheers!

Another great video Brian, and I agree with everything you said. However, there is potentially another way of looking at it, for layer 2. If you know the chord you are playing and you know whether it has a major third or a minor 3rd and also you know whether it has a flat seven or a normal seven (which you could see from Chord name, eg Cm, D7 etc) and you know where to find the root on E, A, and maybe D strings, (let’s park the B string for a moment) then when I find the root of the chord I know that the fifth of the chord is either immediately above on the next string up on the same fret or it can be found two frets over and one string down. The major third of the chord can be found one string down and one fret behind or the Minor third can be found one string down and two frets behind or it can be found on the same string three frets in front, the octave can be found two frets up and two strings down, the flat seven can be found two frets behind the octave or the 7 one fret behind the octave, any other padding notes that you want to include over the chord could be just the pentatonic scale for where you are on the fretboard at that point. If we know the strings of the guitar are tuned in fourths then the B string should really be a C string,to make it a C string you’ve just got add one fret up on the B for the above rules to still work.

Hi Brian I have been a member of your great site for many years now and I have learned a lot and followed all your KZbin videos I had not thought of relating each chord shape of a key to the pentatonic shape 1 as your video shows. It’s obvious when you explained it and it certainly makes chord sequences easier to follow Thanks so much Brian a real lightbulb moment for me

Bloody hell Brian you've just given me a Eureka moment. I knew the shortened version of each Major Root pentatonic shape(the G shape if you like) but I had no idea that each box pattern is named after the upper triad of the A shaped barre chord. Thank you very much Brian. That is tremendously helpful 5 years into my playing.
@zombieguitar
@zombieguitar 12 күн бұрын
Just to clarify...the pentatonic boxes are not and should NOT be associated with a CAGED chord shape name. Yes, the "I chord" in box #1 will be in the G-shape, but that does not mean that you should refer to box #1 the "G position". That leads to the big CAGED misconception that I always talk about, like here in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmOwk2WLYpV5i6Msi=OXE_TgGYJq6NhDef
@skintslots
@skintslots 12 күн бұрын
@@zombieguitar Fair enough. I get that Brian,but it just helps me remember to associate the root with a chord shape and that works for me. I am familiar enough with the Nashville numbers to disassociate the chord from the shape,so to speak. Even so it's made me think of each box in a way I can work through the various chords of the key in a way I understand. Thanks for replying and I enjoy the videos and Facebook group too.

Hello Brian you mentioned the G shape being hard to hold down.In the Aminor position .i someone here on you Tube mentioned it,s just for Reference so you can see where your Triad s and arpeggio notes are.And like you mentioned just play the EBGD strings part of it or EADG part of it . But never the whole shape unless you happen to be Stretch Armstrong 😂

Or when you play 1 or 6th chord play box 1, 4th or 2nd chord play box 4 shape but at the same frets as box 1 and 5th and 3rd chord play box 4 this time move up two frets, so am (C) 5th fret, dm (F) 5th fret and em (G) 7th fret or box 2 at 2nd fret or even box 3 at 5th fret.

Another great Video, and hate to ask a dumb question, but do the seven chord shapes remain the same for all the five Pentatonic box patterns. Said another way, the G shape being the one chord within the Box one pattern, but is the G chord shape also the one chord in the Box 2,3,4,5 patterns????
@zombieguitar
@zombieguitar 23 күн бұрын
No, they will be different shapes within each position. We just looked at the 7 diatonic chords in pentatonic position #1 here in this video. Next week's vid will be about what to do for any other position... Hint: I have made MANY videos about this before already...so if you watch some of my CAGED vids, you'll find the answer 😁

The shapes you mentioned, D shape, G shape, C shape. Are there names for all shapes for all the chord shapes? Eg 1 =G shape. 2=E shape 3=D shape?
@zombieguitar
@zombieguitar 23 күн бұрын
I wouldn't try to attach numbers to the CAGED shapes. You will drive yourself crazy trying to do that. Here in pentatonic position #1, the 1 chord was in the "G shape". However in pentatonic position #2, that will no longer be the case. Instead... 1.) Number the 5 pentatonic positions 2.) Know how to apply the CAGED system such that you can find ANY chord, in ANY given location on the fretboard based on whether the root note location of the chord in question is on the low E-string or the A-string. I've done lots of videos on #2, but I'll also do a follow up vid next week 😁

Nice and clear Brian thanks. So if your in the key of Am the 1 chord is always C and the 6 chord is Am. If your in the key of C the 1 chord is always C and the 6 chord is always Am. Can you confirm that's correct thanks (in other words Am is never the 1 chord even if you are in the key of Am?)
