I would strongly recommend that since you use your truck for every thing that you should follow the manufacturers maintenance guidelines. Piece of mind!
@KeepYourDaydream6 жыл бұрын
I don't know Bob. I've learned that recommendations are at the lowest common denominator. I think the best piece of mind is knowing exactly what's in my oil. How much metal and if there is anything in there that should be. We'll see what the test results say. The first one is the engine breaking in, but the second test should be interesting.

oh 4 hours for oil change. i usually leave our 6.4 all day. takes a LONG time to drain 16 quarts of oil and swap out 2 oil filters. i used to do oil at the dealer, but too far now from my job, so because I do IT at a cold-store there are tons of industrial facilities around including diesel fleet services so I use them.
@KeepYourDaydream6 жыл бұрын
I think it stayed in the same spot for the first 3 hours :) I won't be visiting that dealer again. Test results were good.
@paulfisher46606 жыл бұрын
i've been wanting to lab my oil for a while. think i'll get the kit and see. i usually do 5000 conventional and 7500 synthetic. i had to do a lot of research on diesels before and after we bought ours (my nickname was death star, but the spouse didn't like that, so it's second name is snoopy (it's white with some black))
@KeepYourDaydream6 жыл бұрын
I think you'll be surprised to learn that your oil is fine for much longer. Some things (like change your oil every 5k miles) haven't changed in decades... but the engines and oil has :) Plus, there are other benefits to the oil analysis.
@paulfisher46606 жыл бұрын
yep, think you're right. we've had the truck long enough now that i can feel when the oil is making the motor feel 'off', my last 5000 mile change with conventional still felt like it was running fine. the problem for me is that i'm regening maybe once a week because my drive cycle is so short. so short every 3rd regen is prematurely stopped. i'm using a new shop now, so they seem to know more about oil than the dealer, they say at least 7500. my other diesel shop swore by conventional because it supports the tappets better. so, i'm back to doing some research on oil qualities and engine function to figure out who is mostly right :-) also 6.4's self pollutes it's oil via the EGR system.

You could tell the first one loved taking you through and prided herself in knowing everything she could about the man. The second time I felt like I was doing the guide haha.

Another nice video. As a Powerstroke owner, the overall concensus is keep up on the oil changes and fuel filter changes. Even though some may say you can go 10,000 miles between changes, I do mine every 5000 and have yet to have any problems, with 150,000 miles and probably close to 25% of those miles are from pulling a camper very similar to Ginger. It might seem pricey but compared to the expensive repairs, it's a smart investment.
@KeepYourDaydream6 жыл бұрын
I agree. Proper maintenance is key, but the "every 5k" is marketing. If the test says the viscosity is good, than I'm good. Plus, it's nice to know what's exactly in the oil.
